Racing n Thursday, Ning cmpleted three laps arund the val track in 1 minute and 41.98 secnds, resetting the Olympic recrd. The magnitude f his achievement left him emtinal and almst in disbelief, especially after vercming the event’s verwhelming favrite, tw-time wrld champin Jrdan Stlz f the United States. Ning’s victry marked the Chinese delegatin’s first gld medal in ice sprts at these Games and nly the secnd Olympic title in histry fr Chinese men’s speed skating.
“I still can’t believe I did it. That I’ve climbed ver the muntain, which seemed insurmuntable fr s lng,” said emtinal Ning after lengthy celebratins with his caches and teammates. Stlz, wh had been the dminant frce in the sprt, was the “muntain” Ning had struggled t cnquer in previus cmpetitins. Racing in pair 13 against legendary Dutch skater Kjeld Nuis, the defending champin frm Beijing 2022, Ning cmpleted a flawless race. With a flying start and smth, pwerful strkes thrugh the curves, he finished ahead f Nuis. Stlz, cmpeting in the final pair, clcked 1:42.75 t take silver, while Nuis secured brnze with 1:42.82.
Stlz, wh had already wn gld in the 500m and 1,000m earlier in the Games, praised Ning’s breakthrugh perfrmance, acknwledging, “Tday he had a better race. It was super gd.” Celebrating wildly with Ning was his Dutch cach, Jhan de Wit, wh had taken Ning int his training camp three years ag when Ning failed t medal at the Beijing 2022 Games. Training systematically with De Wit and tw-time Olympic champin Mih Takagi in Japan, Ning significantly imprved his cnsistency. De Wit nted, “By watching him skate, yu can feel that gd perfrmances are cming.”
Ning’s glden dash was part f a remarkable tw-day celebratin fr China. The victry fllwed snwbarder Su Yiming’s gld in men’s slpestyle n Wednesday. Shrtly after Su’s victry, five-time Olympian Xu Mengta delivered China’s secnd gld by delivering a multi-flip stunt (多周翻转动作) t defend her wmen’s freestyle skiing aerials (空中技巧) title, becming the wrld’s nly aerials skier t retain an Olympic gld in the discipline. Additinally, freestyle skier Wang Xindi added t the cuntry’s gld haul n Friday, building n his wife Xu Mengta’s achievement.
Ning’s triumph, built n tw earlier brnze medals in the 1,000m, prved the value f his dedicatin and the trust within Team Gld. His emtinal victry, described by many as a game-changer in the sprt, nt nly fulfilled his persnal dream but als underscred China’s grwing strength n the Olympic stage.

Kids wh are stars in sprts and music dn’t usually grw up t be stars as adults, a new study fund.
An examinatin f thusands f adults acrss fields including sprts, music, academia and chess fund that wrld-class perfrmers — Olympic champins, renwned cmpsers, Nbel winners — ften dn’t excel early. There was just a 10% verlap between high-perfrming kids and elite (精英)-level adults, researchers reprted in a paper Thursday in the jurnal Science. Mst yung tp perfrmers didn’t remain tp perfrmers during peak-perfrmance age, and mst adult standuts weren’t standuts as kids.
“There are thse child prdigies (神童) wh later becme wrld-class perfrmers at peak perfrmance age” said Arne Gullich, a prfessr f sprts science at RPTU Kaiserslautern in Germany and c-authr f the research. “But these are the exceptin, nt the rule.” The researchers defined peak years as being between ages 20 and 30 fr sprts and chess, and mre middle age — between 40 and 50 — fr science and music. The findings were cnsistent acrss dmains, using data frm nearly 35,000 adults in sme tw dzen previusly published studies.
The new analysis challenges the belief that excellence cmes frm hurs f specialized early training — fueled in part by the grwing business f elite cmpetitive prgrams that kids tday enrll in fr sprts and ther activities. Ideas like the “10,000-hur rule,” ppularized by authr Malclm Gladwell, ften guide caches, athletes and parents. The rule suggests a persn needs sme 10,000 hurs f practice t achieve mastery.
“Many peple make decisins fr themselves r their children based n these ideas, such as starting their child early in a sprt r a musical instrument with the gal f prducing the next Tiger Wds r Y-Y Ma,” said Brke Macnamara, a human-perfrmance researcher at Purdue University and c-authr f the Science research. Fred Oswald, an industrial rganizatinal psychlgist wh wasn't invlved in the wrk, said the findings were infrmative but reflect nly general trends. “The implicatins fr advising individuals are unclear,” he said.
The analysis indicated that adult wrld-class perfrmers did a range f activities when yunger with fewer practice hurs in their specific discipline but mre time in ther activities. Gullich says there’s a key takeaway: Encurage kids t pursue a variety f interests rather than specializing early. The evidence frm this paper suggests that engaging in tw additinal areas t yur main discipline is the sweet spt, he added. “S it’s nt ding as many as pssible, like sampling all the instruments in music.”
      8. What can we infer frm the new study?
      A. Early specializatin guarantees adult success.
      B. Peak perfrmance age is identical acrss all fields.
      C. All elite adults were nt tp perfrmers in childhd.
      D. The researchers interviewed 35,000 adults in different fields.
      9. Why des the authr mentin the “10,000-hur rule”?
      A. T explain the lgic behind current training trends.
      B. T criticize Malclm Gladwell’s writing style.
      C. T encurage parents t start their children early.
      D. T prve mastery requires lng-term practice.
      10. What is Fred Oswald’s attitude twards the study’s implicatins fr individuals?
      A. Critical.B. Reserved.C. Indifferent.D. Optimistic.
      11. What des Arne Gullich advise kids t d based n the study?
      A. Pursue as many interests as pssible.
      B. Enrll in elite cmpetitive prgrams early.
      C. Fcus n ne discipline frm an early age.
      D. Cmbine the main discipline with tw extra areas.

The Sun has been prviding energy fr billins f years, and the sunlight that strikes Earth cntinuusly carries mre than 10,000 times the amunt f energy the wrld currently uses. Slar pwer is a clean, renewable surce that never runs ut, unlike fssil fuels such as il and cal, which can’t be replenished (补充) and prduce greenhuse gas (GHG) emissins that cntribute t pllutin and climate change. In the United States, buildings accunt fr 40% f energy use and 70% f electricity cnsumptin, prducing ver ne-third f the natin’s GHG emissins. Rftp slar panels ffer a sustainable slutin, and nearly 78 gigawatts f slar capacity have already been installed natinwide — enugh t pwer 14.5 millin hmes. A slar cell cnverts sunlight int electricity thrugh a prcess similar t phtsynthesis. Phtvltaic (PV) cells cllect sunlight and transfrm it int electrical energy. Multiple slar cells frm a slar panel, and the mre panels installed, the mre energy can be generated. Slar batteries can stre extra energy fr use when the sun isn’t shining, prviding a backup pwer surce. This is especially imprtant as climate change leads t mre frequent extreme weather events and pwer utages.
In New Yrk City, an envirnmental rganizatin called Slar One prmtes slar energy thrugh several innvative prgrams. Their Here Cmes Slar (HCS) initiative helps install rftp panels n buildings, partnering with lcal envirnmental justice grups t make slar pwer accessible, affrdable, and equitable fr wrking-class cmmunities, which are the mst impacted by pllutin and climate change. Thrugh shared cmmunity slar prgrams, renters can purchase shares f slar installatins and benefit frm clean energy withut installing panels n their wn buildings. A prject n public husing in Harlem and Brklyn will help 350 lw-incme husehlds save mney n electricity bills. Almst a third f husehlds in the United States are energy burdened, which means they struggle t pay their energy bills, which are amng their biggest expenses.
Slar One als ffers wrkfrce training and envirnmental educatin. Their Green Wrkfrce Training prgram prvides hard-skills instructin in green cnstructin, building maintenance, and slar PV installatin fr individuals facing emplyment barriers. Meanwhile, the Green Design Lab delivers K-12 STEM educatin, reaching ver 20,000 students acrss mre than 1,000 schls. Students engage in hands-n activities like building mini slar-pwered race cars and cnstructing batteries, develping critical thinking skills while learning abut energy and climate change. Thrugh summer prgrams and internships (实习期), high schl students explre careers in the field f clean energy and participate in service-learning prjects and exciting field trips like turing a slar array r a rftp farm.
When it cmes t creating a sustainable envirnment and a healthier future fr all, the Sun has a starring rle.
      12. What des the authr primarily emphasize abut slar pwer in the first paragraph?
      A. It is a clean energy surce that can’t be replenished.
      B. It has the ptential t cmpletely replace fssil fuels nw.
      C. Its supply is inexhaustible cmpared t traditinal energy.
      D. Its usage is currently limited by technlgical challenges.
      13. Accrding t the passage, hw is the slar energy addressed when the sun isn’t shining?
      A. By integrating it with traditinal fssil fuel pwer plants.
      B. By using battery systems t reserve extra electricity.
      C. By increasing the ttal surface area f slar panels installed.
      D. By relying n gvernment supprt t maintain the pwer supply.
      14. What is the purpse f Slar One’s Here Cmes Slar prgram?

      【答案】参考范文
The lady’s face, which had been glwing with triumph a mment befre, instantly frze. She std rted t the spt, muth pen, t ashamed t say a wrd. Anger and embarrassment burned her cheeks when she caught disapprving stares frm surrunding passengers. She twisted her scarf nervusly, cmpletely lst fr wrds t get ut f the awkward situatin. The black man, hwever, remained gentle and calm. He smiled plitely at the air hstess, picked up his luggage and walked steadily twards the first-class cabin.
The applause frm the fellw passengers was lud and lng, eching thrugh the cabin. All passengers cheered fr the air hstess’s fair and clever decisin, which perfectly punished the wman’s unreasnable racial prejudice. N ne felt pity fr the embarrassed lady, because her rude discriminatin had already cst her thers’ respect. This ending tells us a simple truth: Prejudice hurts thers and eventually disgraces yurself; nly when yu respect thers can yu win respect back.
