But shw me a lawn (草坪) that needs mwing (修剪) and smething magical happens. It desn’t matter if I am n an ld-fashined mwer, I feel it! A pattern frms in my mind and I am ready t dance. As a cnsequence, ur frnt lawn has featured Olympic rings, huge hearts, even a herringbne pattern where I changed the tilt (斜度) n the mwer at the end f each rw. It lked great, but was t much wrk t d again.
Last fall, we let the back lawn grw and I mwed in winding paths. I am nt much f an artist, but ur lawns have becme my special creatin. I am nt sure everyne in the family likes the lk. I hpe calling them grass fields will cnvince my wife t let me keep them.
My mwing habit was featured in the Jhn Deere dealers’ magazine many years back. Actually, twice. The phtgraphers had t stand n tall ladders t get a decent sht.

Fr decades, scientists have mnitred nly a narrw range f chemical pllutants in the envirnment. Yet the mdern wrld cntains thusands f industrial cmpunds, frm industrial catings t husehld cleaners, and mst have never been systematically tested fr safety. T discver what else might be hidden in nature, researchers are turning t sme unexpected assistants: sea lins, cndrs (加州秃鹰), alligatrs (短吻鳄) and ther animals.
These creatures act as “sentinel species,” meaning they can ffer insight int the invisible chemistry f their surrundings. Because they live lng lives and ccupy the tp f fd webs, pllutants tend t build up in their tissues. By studying their bld, feathers, r rgans, scientists can detect nt nly familiar pllutants such as PCBs and flame retardants but als entirely new chemical families that had previusly gne unnticed.
A technique knwn as nn-targeted analysis allws researchers t search fr all chemical cmpunds within an animal sample rather than searching fr ne pllutant at a time. Using this pen-ended methd, teams have identified hundreds f chemicals in wild animals — many came frm industrial prducts, plastics, and husehld cleaners. Each finding helps map hw mdern pllutants travel thrugh air, water, and fd chains.
In Califrnia, cndrs that feed n marine carcasses carry signs f chemicals transprted frm the cean. Alligatrs in Flrida reveal pllutants leaking frm factries and wastewater systems. These results serve as a warning: pllutin is nt limited t cities r industrial znes but spreads acrss ecsystems and species, including humans.
Scientists argue that this brader apprach culd reshape hw envirnmental mnitring is dne. Rather than reacting t ne chemical crisis after anther, researchers can nw build a cmprehensive picture f eclgical health. As ne bilgist said, “When wildlife tells us smething is wrng, it’s nt just abut them — it’s abut the planet we share.” The message is bth scientific and mral: prtecting nature’s warning species means prtecting urselves.

      B. T prve harmful substances differ in varius regins.
      C. T explain the link between diet and chemical expsure.
      D. T emphasize pllutants can travel thrugh varied habitats.
      10. What can be inferred abut the brader apprach in the last paragraph?
      A. It helps reslve envirnmental crises effectively.
      B. It replaces the existing pllutin mnitring methds.
      C. It prvides an integrated view f envirnmental prblems.
      D. It judges wildlife’s living cnditins thrugh human behavir.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Hw Humans Prtect the Warning Species
      B. Hw Animals Accumulate Industrial Pllutants
      C. Hw Humans Benefit frm Wildlife Mnitring
      D. Hw Animals Help Scientists Track Dwn Pllutants

During surgery, a 2 mm-square micrchip — thinner than a human hair — is placed under the retina (视网膜). Patients then wear special glasses with a small vide camera. The glasses send images thrugh infrared light t the implant which relays them t a pcket-sized prcessr. This prcessr sharpens the images befre sending them thrugh the ptic nerve (视神经) t the brain, restring sme visual sensitivity fr reading.
The study invlved 38 participants acrss five Eurpean cuntries. It fcused n the Prima implant, develped by Pixium Visin Science Crpratin in Califrnia. Amng the 32 peple wh received the implant, 27 regained partial sight and the ability t read. After ne year, their reading visin imprved by abut 25 letters — r five lines — n a standard eye chart.
The Prima implant is nt yet apprved fr the public. Hwever, Dr. Muqit, wh led the UK team, hpes it will be available t sme patients under the Natinal Health Service (NHS) within a few years. Dr. Peter Blmfield, research directr at the Macular Sciety, said the results are encuraging fr patients wh have n current treatment ptins. He explained, “Artificial visin may ffer a lt f hpe t many, particularly after previus disappintments in the wrld f dry AMD treatment.” He added, “We are nw watching clsely t see if the Prima implant will be apprved fr use here in the UK, and crucially whether it culd be made available n the NHS.”
Experts believe this medical breakthrugh culd ne day help thse with ther eye cnditins. Fr millins living with blindness, this isn’t just a step frward in science — it’s a life-changing mment filled with hpe, curage, and the prmise f seeing the wrld again.
      12. Hw d dctrs help blind patients regain reading visin?
      A. By perating n their ptic nerve.
      B. By equipping patients with a camera.
      C. By placing a micrchip in their eyes.
      D. By treating dry AMD with special drugs.

      B. They can restre reading visin rapidly.
      C. They have a small vide camera built in.
      D. They can help sharpen the images directly.
      14. What can we cnclude frm Dr. Peter Blmfield’s wrds?
      A. Artificial visin has a bright future.
      B. The implant is apprved in the UK.
      C. NHS ffers free treatment t patients.
      D. Dry AMD has n breakthrughs nwadays.
      15. What might the fllw-up research fcus n?
      A. Future medical cst reductin.B. Wider eye disease applicatin.
      C. Lng-term medical safety mnitring.D. Higher visin sensitivity imprvement.

The annual Schl Innvatin Fair themed “Upcycling” was the semester’s highlight. My classmates excitedly prepared their prjects, fcusing n technlgical nvelty: using 3D printers t create plastic art, r prgramming rbts t srt waste. The schl hall buzzed (嗡嗡声) with energy as students put the finishing tuches n their creatins. Rbts ran acrss tables, 3D printers wrked, and clrful displays shwcased everything frm slar-pwered devices t smart waste-srting systems. Amng this atmsphere f mdern inventin, I felt increasingly anxius abut my wn prject — an ld, wrn-ut wden chair that had belnged t my grandfather.
Hwever, my prject was different. I chse t repair my grandfather’s ld wden chair. In his wrkshp, surrunded by the smell f wd and the sund f sandpaper, he taught me hw t fix its lse leg and smth its surface. He shwed me hw t check each jint, apply just the right amunt f glue, and patiently wait fr it t dry.
The prcess was slw and required patience — smething cmpletely ppsite t the fast-paced wrld f technlgy my classmates were explring. I felt a bit ut f place, wndering if my simple, hands-n wrk had any value cmpared t their mdern inventins. I even dubted whether such an rdinary and ld chair culd stand ut amng s many amazing inventins.
As the fair day apprached, I nearly gave up. But my grandfather’s wrds eched in my mind: “Smetimes the simplest repairs carry the deepest meaning.” Encuraged by his wisdm, I decided t cntinue. I finished the last piece, feeling the smth wd beneath my fingers. It was as if I culd feel my grandfather’s warmth thrugh the chair. I realized this prject was nt just abut repairing furniture — it was abut cntinuing a family traditin and preserving precius memries. Mre imprtantly, it was a special way t cnnect with my grandfather and carry n the lve and care hidden in the ld chair.
