A remarkable new study n hw whales behaved when attacked by humans in the 19th century has implicatins fr the way they react t changes caused by humans in the 2Ist century.
The paper is authred by Whitehead and Rendellt at Dalhusie University and their research addresses an age- -ld questin: if whales are s smart, why did they hang arund t be killed? The answer? They didn't. Using newly digitised (数字化的) lgbks detailing the hunting f whales in the nrth Pacific, the authrs discvered that within just a few years, the strike rate f the whalers’ harpns(捕鲸者的鱼叉) fell by 58%. This simple fact leads t an astnishing cnclusin: that infrmatin abut what was happening t them was being cllectively shared amng the whales, wh made vital changes t their behaviur. They learned quickly frm their mistakes.
“Sperm whales have a traditinal way f reacting t attacks frm rca (杀人鲸),” ntes Whitehead. Befre humans, rca were their nly predatrs (捕食者), against whm sperm whales frm defensive circles, their pwerful tills held utwards t keep predatrs at bay, “But such techniques just made it easier fr the whalers t kill them,” says Whitehead.
Sperm whales are highly scialised animals, able t cmmunicate ver great distances. Infrmatin abut the new dangers may have been passed n in the same way they share knwledge abut feeding grunds. They als pssess the largest brain n the planet. It is nt hard t imagine that they understd what was happening t them.
The hunters themselves realised the whales’effrts t escape. They saw that the animals appeared t cmmunicate the threat within their attacked grups. Abandning their usual defensive frmatins, the whales swam upwind t escape the hunters, ships, themselves wind-pwered.
Nw, just as whales are beginning t recver frm the industrial destructin by 20th-century whaling fleets, whse steamships and grenade harpns n whale culd escape frm, they face new threats created by ur technlgy. “They’re having t learn nt t get hit by ships, cpe with the depredatins (劫掠) f lng line fishing, the changing surce f their fd due t climate change,”Whitehead says. “The same srt f urgent scial learning the animals experienced in the whale wars f tw centuries ag is reflected in the way they negtiate tday's uncertain wrld.”
32. What is the new study mainly abut?
A. Whales’ scial lives.B. Whales’emtinal intelligence.
C. Whale’reactin t climate changes.D. Whales’ behavir under human attack.
33. What caused whales t make changes t escape the hunters’ship?
A. The wind in their favr.B. Their pwerful physical strength.
C. The shared ship attack infrmatin.D. Their usual defensive frmatins.
34. What des the authr intend t d in Paragraph 5?
A. State pssible reasns.B. Add backgrund infrmatin.
C. Summarize the previus paragraphs.D. Intrduce a new tpic fr discussin.
35. What's Whitehead’s attitude twards whales’ future survival?
A. Pessimistic.B. Unclear.C. Cautius.D. Optimistic.
