A single researcher with a desktp cmputer can nw make crrect weather frecasts using a new AI methd that is much faster and uses far less cmputing pwer than traditinal systems.
At present, weather frecasts are made thrugh many difficult steps, each taking hurs. These systems need supercmputers and large teams f experts t develp and keep them wrking.
Hwever, Aardvark Weather ffers a new methd by training AI t cllect data frm weather statins, satellites, weather ballns, ships, and planes arund the wrld t make predictins. This prmises imprvements in frecast speed, crrectness, and cst, accrding t research published in Nature by the University f Cambridge, the Alan Turing Institute, Micrsft Research, and the Eurpean Centre fr Medium-Range Weather Frecasts (ECMWF).
Prfessr Richard Turner frm the University f Cambridge explained that this new methd can quickly create specialized frecasts fr different industries r lcatins. Fr example, it culd guess temperatures fr farms in Africa r wind speeds fr wind energy cmpanies in Eurpe. Traditinal weather systems require large teams and supercmputers t deal with data and create frecasting mdels, taking hurs fr just ne frecast.
“This is a ttally different methd,” Turner said, adding that the mdel wuld finally be able t prvide crrect eight-day frecasts, cmpared t the present five-day limit, and ffer mre lcalized predictins.
Dr. Sctt Hsking frm the Alan Turing Institute said that this breakthrugh culd make weather frecasting available t mre cuntries, especially develping cuntries. It will als help gvernments, emergency teams, and businesses that need weather predictins.
Dr. Anna Allen, the lead authr f the paper, highlighted that this research culd imprve frecasts f natural disasters like hurricanes and wildfires, as well as prblems like air quality and sea ice predictins.
Aardvark builds frm research frm Huawei, Ggle, and Micrsft, replacing a key step in the traditinal methd with AI, which makes frecasts faster and mre crrect. It is already in use at the ECMWF.
Researchers fund that Aardvark nly needs 10% f the data used by present systems, yet in sme areas, it des better than the US Natinal GFS frecasting system and matches the crrectness f the US Weather Service.
37.What is the main advantage f the new AI weather predictin methd?
