Recently, I was listening t Paul Simn’s 1983 album Hearts and Bnes again and was struck by a questin: what did it — a weary, bittersweet reflectin n a brken relatinship-mean t my yunger self? As a teenager with little rmantic experience, I believe I was drawn t the maturity sadness seemed t represent, which hints at a cmplex jy fund within sadness.
But why value sadness when happiness is s universally pursued? Natins measure well-being thrugh happiness Indexes (指数), and philsphies priritize increasing jy. Yet, in reality, we dn’t seek cnstant happiness. Smetimes sadness has a cause; smetimes we want t be. Perhaps emtinal variety is preferable t mntny. But there’s mre t it — sadness hlds a depth that happiness lacks.
Sadness inspires great art in a way that grinningly eating ice cream cannt. Essayist Hartley Cleridge praised it as a mre elegant state f mind than happiness. “Melanchly (悲伤) can scarce exist in an undegraded spirit — it cannt exist in a mere animal” is hw he put it, suggesting it is mre dignified than happiness. I suspect mst peple feel jy is, at rt, a kind f idit pleasure. Melanchly is smehw mre grwn-up, mre sincere, and mre authentic.
Just as what evlutinary scientists call “the handicap principle”, luxurius traits are useful, because they are s shwily expensive, apparently incnveniencing the wner. They are a way f saying: I’m s strng. The peacck’s tail, fr example, despite being a disadvantage attached, signals desirable genes. Sadness, accrding t this mdel, is a kind f bvius cnsumptin. It takes mre muscles t frwn than smile, and maybe that’s the pint. Darwin bserved that sadness appears the same way acrss all cultures, implying a deep-rted human capacity.
Happiness can be lvely, but the prfund, elegant sadness unlcks aesthetic (美学) wrld that happiness can never reach.
8. Why did the authr like Paul Simn’s 1983 album as a teenager?
A. He thught sadness inspired art.
B. He viewed sadness as happiness.
C. He experienced brken relatinships.
D. He assciated sadness with being mature.
9. What’s Hartley Cleridge’s view n melanchly?
A. Unrelated t art.B. Rich in variety.
C. Unique t humans.D. Deep-rted in histry.
10. Why des the authr refer t the peacck’s tail?
A. T stress frwning takes mre muscles.
B. T shw luxurius traits are unnecessary.
C. T prve sadness is apparently cnvenient.
D. T explain sadness has evlutinary value.
11. What’s the best title f this passage?
A. Why the lng face?B. Which is deeper?
C. What’s happiness?D. Where’s sadness?

In July, the University f Chicag’s principal annunced plans t “restructure” its Divisin f the Arts and Humanities, ptentially reducing language instructin, establishing minimum class sizes and s n. As fr why an institutin with a huge fund f ver $10 billin, renwned wrldwide fr its humanities prgrams, wuld make such dramatic changes, administratrs ffered a vague reasn centered n “histric funding pressures”. But what, specifically, are these pressures? As Cliffrd And, a distinguished prfessr f classics at Chicag, details the university’s leadership, has fr years spent vast amunts f mney, largely n STEM prjects, and then attempted t weaken its Divisin f the Arts and the Humanities as a means t pay fr these investments.
In fact, as And writes, they are the “nly staff in the arts and sciences wh systematically pay fr themselves: they d nt need expensive buildings; the prvisin f instructin in their fields is cheap”. Thus, it seems t many prfessrs f the humanities that “financial crisis” has becme an excuse fr far-reaching changes that are nt necessary s much as desired by university leaders.
Why might university leaders deliberately chse t undercut humanistic educatin and research? Many reasns suggest themselves. Surely the endless reprts f artificial intelligence spelling the end f reading and writing aren’t helping matters. STEM fields secure far mre financial aid and thus serve as ptentially imprtant surces f incme fr universities. But we shuld nt verlk a deeper rt traced back t the 19th century. Prir t that time, higher educatin in the United States was greatly influenced by the spirit f Renaissance humanism. The institutins devted utsized attentin t the study f ancient Greek and Rman literature, key t shaping students’ characters. In the late 19th century, refrmers shifted their fcus t the scientific methd, n which they aimed t recenter higher educatin.
Amid these changes, American clleges have abandned their cre riginal missin. They ught t ffer students space fr reflectin n human life, balance character develpment with career training, and preserve human cultural heritage as diligently as they advance new knwledge.
12. What accunts fr Chicag University’s restructuring plan accrding t Prfessr And?
A. Fund shrtage.B. AI’s ppularity.
C. Humanities’ cstly instructin.D. STEM’s huge investments.
13. Hw many reasns are given in Paragraph 3 fr undercutting humanities?
A. Tw.B. Three.C. Fur.D. Five.
14. What is the authr’s attitude twards the changes?
A. Apprving.B. Objective.C. Critical.D. Skeptical.
15. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. The influence f AI n higher educatin.
B. The develpment f STEM fields in the US.
C. The financial prblem f American universities.
D. The neglect f humanities in American universities.
