Fd safety experts and ther scientists knew there had t be a faster way t detect and link utbreaks. They determined that if public health labratries culd each cnduct the same kind f DNA analysis n bacteria and then share the data, dts culd be cnnected and utbreaks culd be identified sner.
And s, PulseNet was brn. Launched in 1996, PulseNet, develped in partnership with APHL, US Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin (CDC), ther federal partners and fur state public health labs, is a natinal labratry netwrk that analyzes a pathgen’s (病原体) unique DNA fingerprint. The resulting data are published t a natinal database. Micrbilgists and epidemilgists frm arund the cuntry can access the database and determine if there are similarities that indicate cases are related and even share a cmmn surce f infectin.

Inspiratin fr Zeynep Demirbas’ research struck during a chat with a friend. That friend, a psychlgist, said sme health insurance cmpanies were pushing the use f artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, fr mental health. The idea: AI might be less cstly and easier t access than human therapists (治疗专家).
That wrried Zeynep, 14. She knew that ChatGPT ften gave wrng answers r agreed with incrrect statements. Culd this type f AI, knwn as a large language mdel — r LLM — really be trusted with ur mental health?
T find ut, she tested whether several LLMs culd detect stress in human text. She gave the mdels a dataset f mre than 3,500 psts. Human raters had been asked t label each ne as cntaining stress r nt. Then Zeynep asked the mdels t identify which psts shwed stress.
T judge hw well the mdels did, Zeynep calculated smething called an F1-scre fr each ne. This scre cnsiders hw many stress-cntaining psts the mdels accurately sptted. It als accunts fr hw ften the mdels missed cases f stress and hw ften they mislabeled psts as shwing stress. An LLM specifically designed fr mental health did the best. It scred abut 82 percent. ChatGPT scred nly abut 74 percent.
ChatGPT perfrming badly was “really surprising”, Zeynep says. It did even wrse than the “randm-frest” mdel, which is “suppsed t be a very simple and ld technique. S I just put it in as a baseline,” Zeynep says. “That was very interesting — hw smething s small and simple was able t beat an LLM like ChatGPT that used millins f parameters (参数) and had s much cding g int it.”
“We shuld be mindful with AI,” Zeynep says. “That desn’t mean that LLMs are bad, because they’ re fr general use. They’ re nt necessarily meant fr mental health.” Her data led her t cnclude that LLMs shuld nt be replacing human therapists. Instead, these mdels might help identify peple wh are struggling and refer them t a mental health prfessinal.
      32. What wrried Zeynep when chatting with a friend?
      A. AI is applied t mental health.B. Human therapists charge high fees.
      C. AI is develping at an alarming rate.D. Health insurance cmpanies face challenges.
      33. Why were the human raters asked t label the psts?
      A. T assess the reliability f the psts.
      B. T figure ut the F1-scres f different LLMs.
      C. T prvide a reference standard fr LLM testing.
      D. T assess human raters’ accuracy in detecting stress.
      34. Why des Zeynep mentin the randm- frest mdel?
      A. T erase dubts abut ld mdels.
      B. T cmpare simple and cmplex mdels.
      C. T illustrate the urgent need fr mre parameters.
      D. T shw the pr perfrmance f LLMs in the test.
      35. What des Zeynep mean in the last paragraph?
      A. LLMs are generally useless in mst fields.
      B. Humans are respnsible fr imprving AI.
      C. LLMs need mre training in identifying mental struggles.
      D. Humans still play a dminant rle in addressing mental issues.

After a few days f searching and applying, I was frtunate t find a jb as an administrative assistant with Yung & Rubicam, a famus advertising agency. I wasn’t thrilled abut the jb because I had graduated with a degree t teach English, but the pay was gd, and the extra mney was a blessing.
The jb was rather dull, thugh, mainly typing letters, answering phnes, setting up fr cnferences, filing, scheduling meetings, arranging travel fr the cpywriters (撰稿人), etc. I felt that what I was ding was insignificant. As letters r travel brchures wuld cme acrss my desk t be typed, I wuld read ver them. Often, there were grammatical errrs r the spelling was nt always accurate, but since it wasn’t my jb t crrect them, I typed them as they were given t me.
One day, I was talking t my grandmther, LuOlive Graham. Anyne nt related t her called her Lu. Everybdy else, including all twelve f her children and fifteen grandchildren, called her “Muh”. Muh was a wise wman lady. Her children adred and admired her. There was nthing better than t spend a day with Muh, which meant yu were ging t hear fascinating stries abut her grwing up, while savring her tea and cakes.
Over tea, I said, “Muh, yu shuld see the things that cme acrss my desk — letters, mems, and brchures with crazy grammar, pr spelling, and awkward sentences. But I guess it’s nt my jb t crrect them.” Then, I added that I nly did what they paid me t d.
Muh listened attentively, as she always did, and after I finished, she said very calmly, “Hney, dn’t just d enugh t get by. Always d yur best wrk. Whatever yur hand finds t d, d it with all yur might. Yu may find mre enjyment in the jb if yu d yur best. Plus, it never hurts yu t let peple knw that yu can d mre than what they hired yu t d.”
