      Mary’s Meals, an rganizatin funded in 2002 by Scttish farmer Magnus Macfarlane-Barrw, prvides needy kids in 12 cuntries with free meals at schl each weekday. The grup’s aim is t ensure that students have fd in their stmachs s they can better fix their attentin n the study in class.
      Macfarlane-Barrw, wh runs Mary’s Meals n his father’s farm, tld CNN that the entire peratin started with a cnversatin he had with a teen living in a pr state. He said, “In 2002, I was in Malawi during a year f terribly shrt f fd, and I met this family — the father had died, and the mther was dying with her six children arund her. I began talking t her ldest child, Edward, wh was abut 14, and asked him, ‘What are yur hpes?’ And he said, ‘I’d like t have enugh fd t eat, and I’d like t g t schl ne day’” And that was it.
      In its first year, the grup fed 200 children in need. Since that time, it has made rapid prgress. Last mnth. Mary’s Meals fed mre than 1 millin children every schl day. That was 5 millin meals every week. “The millin is amazingly imprtant, but we are far frm satisfied. Our wrk’s just beginning. We’ve prven that this wrks, and nw we’re just thinking abut the next child,” said MacFarlane-Barrw.
      He and the grup recently celebrated the achievement in Malawi, where the prgram began. S far, the prgram has had very gd results in Malawi, schls that carried ut the Mary’s Meals prgram saw a 24 percent increase in the number f new students within the first six mnths.
