Fr Sarah, a librarian in a small twn in Oregn, the library was never just a

As temperatures climbed t dangerus levels, Sarah nticed an unusual influx f peple. It wasn’t just the regular readers; it was elderly cuples whse hmes lacked
air cnditining, exhausted delivery wrkers lking fr a cl crner, and teenagers wh usually spent their afternns at the nw-clsed lcal park. The library, with its pwerful cling system and free Wi-Fi, became a sanctuary.
One afternn, Sarah sptted a man named David sitting near the back, staring blankly at a cmputer screen. After a brief cnversatin, she learned that David had recently lst his jb and, withut a hme internet cnnectin, was struggling t apply fr new psitins. Seeing his frustratin, Sarah didn’t just pint him t a shelf. She
spent her lunch breaks fr the next week helping him plish his resume and navigating cmplex jb prtals.
“Libraries are the nly places where yu can exist withut being expected t
spend mney,” Sarah bserved. Inspired by the crisis, she started a “Career Crner” in the library, ffering free printing services and weekly wrkshps. The initiative was a huge success, attracting lcal business wners wh vlunteered t cnduct mck
interviews.
Mnths later, David walked in, nt t escape the heat, but t share the news that he had secured a technician jb. He handed Sarah a small ptted plant — a tken f gratitude. Fr Sarah, the library had evlved. It was n lnger just a quiet space fr
silence, but a dynamic hub where lives were rebuilt.

As digital cmmunicatin becmes the primary way many peple cnnect, the language we use in these spaces is cnstantly evlving. Texting has develped its wn
dialect (方言), filled with abbreviatins like “hru?”(hw are yu?). While nearly all texters use these shrtcuts, the findings suggest that dashing ff a swift “hru?” might nt appear as genuine as taking the time t spell ut: “Hw are yu?”
“While abbreviatins can save time and effrt, ur research suggests that they may als slw dwn effective cmmunicatin and negatively influence interpersnal perceptins,” the authrs write in Jurnal f Experimental Psychlgy.
The findings challenge the cmmn assumptin abut texting culture. While
99% f peple reprt using abbreviatins and 84% believe thers dn’t mind them,
the research shws that abbreviated messages cnsistently create negative
impressins. Perhaps mst tellingly, nly 15.8% f participants crrectly predicted
this negative impact, while 80% assumed thers wuld be indifferent t abbreviatins.
David Fang at Stanfrd University and his clleagues ran the studies t explre the impact f abbreviatins in different messaging scenaris (情景). They examined ver 200,000 cnversatins frm 686 users spanning 37 cuntries and five cntinents. Researchers calculated the percentage f abbreviatins participants used in their
messages. They discvered a clear pattern: cnversatins cntaining mre abbreviatins cnsistently died ut faster.
“Our research reveals that texting abbreviatins negatively affect interpersnal cmmunicatin by decreasing perceived effrt, which in turn leads t lwer perceived sincerity and respnsiveness. Ultimately, ur findings highlight the imprtance f
cnsidering the impact f evlving language use in the digital era n the quality f interpersnal cmmunicatin,” Fang and his clleagues cncluded.
Texting abbreviatins culd cntribute t lneliness if peple find that scial
bnds weaken ver time because they receive less frequent r psitive replies t their texts, Fang said. But he desn’t believe peple shuld stp using abbreviatins
altgether.
“We ften tailr the effrt we put int cnversatins t match the significance f the relatinship. In sme cases, it makes sense t invest less effrt, like quickly texting with a delivery driver,” Fang said. “Hwever, ur findings are especially
relevant when we want t strengthen scial ties, such as at the beginning f a
relatinship r when we need t make a gd impressin.”
8 .What d the findings indicate abut texting abbreviatins?
A .They make senders seem insincere.
B .They have evlved ver a lng time.
C .They reshape digital cmmunicatin.
D .They are a shrtcut t learning dialects.
9 .What d texters cmmnly assume abut abbreviatins?
A .They culd becme trendy.
B .They wuld nt bther thers.
C .They culd ruin cmmunicatin.
D .They wuld damage scial cnnectins.
10 .Fang’s research reveals that the use f abbreviatins is perceived as .
A .the evlutin f language
B .a lwer effrt frm the sender
C .an imprved cnversatinal quality
D .the preference fr a shrter cnversatin
11 .What is Fang’s view n using abbreviatins?
A .It enhances scial ties. B .It shuld be abandned.
C .It depends n the cntext. D .It can simplify the cntent.

“I write t find ut what I’m thinking, ” wrte the great American jurnalist
Jhn Ds Passs. Anyne engaged in writing understands this truth: the act f writing transfrms half - frmed ideas int precise, lgical thught. What sunds cherent (有条理的) when spken ften appears weak and illgical when cmmitted t paper.
A recent MIT study prvides cnvincing scientific evidence fr this claim.
Researchers used wearable brain scanners t cmpare students wh wrte essays
independently with thse using AI assistance. The findings were clear: AI-assisted writers “cnsistently underperfrmed at brain, verbal, and behaviural levels”. They demnstrated that we need t write in rder t think deeply.
This research emerges at a critical histrical mment fr literacy. Childhd
reading has reached recrd lws, with nearly half f British adults nt reading a single bk last year. Adult literacy is declining r making n prgress acrss mst OECD
cuntries. Ntably, average IQs have begun t decline since the 1980s, alng with reasning and prblem-slving abilities — a trend that is unlikely t be randm.
Walter Ong’s influential wrk “Orality and Literacy” clarifies why writing is essential. He argued that literacy enabled Ancient Greece’s intellectual revlutin. Oral cultures must “think memrable thughts”, relying n rhyme, emtin, and
cliché (陈词滥调) t preserve knwledge. Writing, by cntrast, allws fr precise, cmplex statements that can be examined, reviewed, and develped int lgical
arguments.
In ur digital age, n technlgy has surpassed the cmplicated architecture f the bk. While the internet ffers fragmented (碎片化的) infrmatin, bks
prvide rich cntext and sustained lgical cnnectins. Reading is an active prcess that demands engagement and cncentratin — it is essentially thinking in dialgue with the text.
As ur culture becmes increasingly dminated by shrt-frm vides and
attentin-fragmenting cntent, we risk lsing the capacity fr cmplex reasning. Reading and writing frm the fundatin f serius thught — a habit that unites
histry’s greatest minds. Befre we yield ur cgnitive develpment t screens and algrithms, we must carefully cnsider what we might be sacrificing.
12 .Hw des AI assistance affect writing accrding t the MIT study?
A .It reduces deep thinking. B .It imprves writing speed.
C .It enhances creative expressin. D .It has little impact n brain activity.
13 .Why is writing essential fr develping lgical arguments?
A .It relies n rhyme and emtin. B .It is easier t remember and repeat.
C .It requires cncentratin and engagement. D .It enables accurate and revisable statements.
14 .What is the authr’s attitude twards digital media’s effect n deep thinking?
A .Optimistic. B .Dismissive. C .Objective. D .Cncerned.
15 .Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A .The Decline f Mdern Literacy
B .The Benefits f Reading in a Digital Age
C .Writing: The Fundatin f Deep Thinking
D .Thinking: The Capacity fr Cmplex Reasning

故填 a。
空处为主句谓语动词,根据时间状语“Over the past six years”可知,此处应用现在完成时,主语“the 40-year-ld Shanghai resident”为单数,助动词应用 has 。故填 has made。

ancient dcuments 作主语,表示“按照古代文献中描述的在茶泡沫上创造图案的理论” 。故填
applying。
