Prigi Arisandi enjyed his childhd in the clean, clear waters f the Surabaya River near his hme in Bambe Village in East Java.
Prigi mved t Surabaya fr university in 1994. He returned hme fr a visit in 1996 and was shcked t find the river dark brwn, smelly. Wrse still, after nly a very shrt swim, he itched all ver.
Driven t find ut why, Prigi frmed a study grup called Ectn. The grup cnducted water sampling, and cllected data abut the insects, micr-rganisms and fishes in and arund the river.
The studies revealed that 60% f childhd cancer cases in Surabaya prvince were linked t the Surabaya River, which shcked the grup. Prigi’s grup identified varius pisnus chemicals in the water, with mercury, cadmium and lead all abve the natinal safety standards.
