The prblem was that the bk has a reputatin fr being cmplex and difficult t understand. A difficult undertaking — ne f the things I disliked mst! And t d it all alne. S I psted n scial media asking friends if they wuld like t jin me. T my surprise, nearly 40 peple respnded. I drafted a reading plan that spanned 10 weeks, tw fr each part f the bk, and we were ff.
We met every Sunday n Zm, ften entering ur meetings puzzled by Spinza’s declaratins. But after an hur f heady discussin, we’d leave with a little mre clarity. Our md by the time we arrived at the bk’s final chapter was nthing shrt f ebullient. Over the curse f the last year, we’ve read a number f challenging bks we therwise wuld have never read alne.
What is the pint f this? Why are we ding this t urselves? Nne f us are academic philsphers, by any means; we have busy jbs and ther pressing adult respnsibilities. But the prcess has prved fruitful. We can never knw frm which tricky crner the wrld will reveal smething essential abut ur lives. What matters is the challenge, regardless f whether it yields anything cncrete. It is the prcess itself that is instructive. As Spinza says in The Ethics, “All things excellent are as difficult as they are rare.”

In the stillness f a winter’s night, a snw lepard was ut hunting int the livestck crral (畜栏) n Rinchen Lama’s farm, high in the hills f Dlpa in Nepal. Rinchen remembers the scene the fllwing mrning: “There was wl and bld everywhere. I lst 37 sheep and gats, almst my entire livelihd.” A few mnths later, anther attack. Rinchen’s hrse was killed. Everyne living in Dlpa can tell abut the pwerful predatrs (捕食者). Thse farm animals didn’t stand a chance.
The creatures are listed as vulnerable animals by the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature. Their numbers are thught t be declining partly as the ppulatin f their wild prey decreases sharply. Dmestic hrses in particular have becme an imprtant fd surce fr snw lepards. Farmers wh lse livestck smetimes chse t kill them. “We’ve been tld cnserving snw lepards is imprtant, but fr cmmunities like urs, they make ur life very difficult,” Rinchen says.
Tshiring Lhamu Lama, a Nepali cnservatinist, is wrking t change the attitude. Supprted by the Snw Lepard Cnservancy, she, alng with lcal herders, designed and built Dlpa’s first lepard-prf crrals. These fences prved highly effective in preventing night-time killings.
Hwever, accrding t Ghana Gurung, directr f the Wrld Wide Fund fr Nature (WWF) in Nepal, as lng as livestck feed in the snw lepard’s habitat, it will be impssible t stp all predatin by these big cats. Tshiring hpes t surce additinal funds t make up fr cntinued lsses. In 2020, Tshiring established a lcal tur peratr, Snw lepard Jurney. The prgramme helped lcals t set up accmmdatin fr turists and trained peple t becme snw lepard guides.
Overall, in places where snw lepards killed livestck n a day-t-day basis, turism has develped, which is bringing in 10 times mre than they had earned frm raising livestck. Killings f snw lepards have decreased sharply. “Fr me, I need t preserve bth — snw lepards fr the ecsystem, and livelihds fr the peple.” Tshiring says.

One persn’s trash is anther persn’s… jet fuel? Strange as it might sund, researchers at the University f Illinis Urbana-Champaign utlined a strategy fr turning excess fd waste int sustainable aviatin fuel (SAF), which largely refers t fuels extracted frm rganic materials. The fuel can g straight int a plane withut additinal changes t the aircraft’s basic facilities.
The United States Envirnmental Prtectin Agency (EPA) estimates that transprtatin accunted fr rughly 29 percent f US greenhuse gas emissins in 2022 alne. Mdern cars have reduced emissins in recent years, in part thanks t the shift tward electric battery pwer, while battery-pwered airplanes dn’t prvide enugh energy t pwer a large size and lng flight time f passenger jet. As a result, jets have fallen behind cars in reducing emissins.
In the experiment, the team started by cllecting fd waste frm fd-prcessing plants. They then used a chemical prcess called hydrthermal liquefactin (HTL) t extract crude il (原油) frm the fd waste. After that, they remved the impurities and ther undesirable elements thrugh a tw-part prcess. What remained were then refined int jet fuel, SAF.
The fuel passed the screening test and met industry requirements. Sme estimates suggest that SAF culd reduce emissins by up t 80 percent, cmpared t cnventinal jet fuel. The finding pens up the pssibility t help the aviatin industry achieve net-zer carbn emissins within the next three decades. “In a linear ecnmy, we just prduce smething, use it, and thrw it away. In this prject, we take the waste and recver the energy and materials t make a usable prduct. This fills a missing link in the circular ecnmy,” the prfessr Yuanhui Zhang in the university said.
The research helps slve the science and engineering prblems. It is a first step t shw aviatin fuel extracted frm fd waste is pssible. Actually making enugh f it t supply an entire passenger jet, hwever, is anther beast altgether. Scaling up at this level needs time, resurces, and deep pckets utside f academia.
32.Hw des the authr present the need t slve aircraft pllutin?
A.By giving examples.B.By quting an expert.
C.By defining a cncept.D.By making a cmparisn.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A.Why HTL is used.B.Hw SAF is made.
C.What bifuel refers t.D.Where crude il is frm.
34.Why des the authr qute Yuanhui Zhang’s wrds?
A.T define a new type f ecnmy mdel.
B.T present the test results f the jet fuel.
C.T stress the sustainability f SAF prductin.
D.T cnfirm SAF’s effect n emissin reductin.
35.What can we learn abut the new fuel accrding t the last paragraph?
A.Its applicatin is arund the crner.
B.Its academic research hits a bttleneck.
C.Its mass prductin needs much investment.
D.Its success relies n internatinal cperatin.
As Generative AI (GenAI) becmes increasingly embedded (嵌入) in many f the things we d, the critical use f GenAI has emerged as an essential skill t develp. 36 . Here are sme skills yu need t engage critically with AI tls.
Backgrund research and thinking
The use f AI tls within yur studies is mst effective when yu have a clear purpse and an understanding f the utputs yu expect t receive. Therefre, dn’t simply put yur essay title int an AI tl. 37 . Yu culd ask yurself, “What d yu knw already?” r “What might yu need t research further?”
Prepare initial prmpts
A gd prmpt (提示) will include at least three elements: rle, functin and limitatin. A rle refers t what rle yu want the AI tl t play. 38 . Fr example, “Prvide a summary f key perspectives n a tpic”. A limitatin specifies the frm, length r style f the GenAI’s respnse, like “Answer in n mre than 500 wrds.”
39
It is likely that yur initial utput will be shallw and general. Hw can yu develp a richer utput? Yu might chat with the AI tl using mre specific prmpts. Dn’t just ask it t prvide the answer but encurage further reflectin. Fr instance, “Identify the unclear lgic f my text but dn’t tell me the specific prblems.” r “List the language mistakes but dn’t crrect them. Just prvide hints t help me make crrectins.”
Perfrm critical analysis f utputs
There are limits t the capability f GenAI fr finding accurate and reliable infrmatin. Yu need t analyse critically. Lking at the utputs, yu’re advised t cnsider what facts yu need t check and whether yu can think f any gaps. These effrts are nt in vain. 40 .
A.Find sme example prmpts
B.They lead t a deeper grasp f a tpic.
C.Dialgue prmpting fr deeper respnses
D.Yu shuld think abut yur initial thughts
E.A functin is what yu want the AI tl t d
F.Weigh up GenAI’s ptential benefits fr yur purpse
G.It’s abut building a thughtful relatinship with GenAI

Tai Chi was fascinating, but I culdn’t see its pint. I culd achieve my fitness gals frm exercise classes, swimming and cycling. I chse nly t admire this martial art as it was practised by thers, and kept my distance.
But Tai Chi stayed with me — a seed planted. Amazingly, several years later, the necessary cnditins fr flwering emerged. Mre time cupled with a recmmendatin frm my dctr brught me t the starting line. I sught ut a Tai Chi center and enrlled in classes with a well-knwn instructr. The class drew peple frm all ver Canada. We started with fundatinal exercises. We std like trees, rted yet relaxed, and mved with such slwness that every breath felt vivid and intentinal. In that quiet rhythm, the tiny seedling I’d carried fr years finally began t push thrugh the sil.
Reminded f the instructr’s advice t listen t my bdy and breath, I tried again and again. But my mind wuld wander, and my mvements remained stiff and mechanical. Cmmit and imprve: That was the nly path frward. At first, frustratin kept bubbling up inside me. My arms felt like lead, and my steps were s clumsy. Hwever, I frced myself t fcus n each breath, mentally tracing the flw f energy as the instructr had said. Little by little, my mvements sftened and the stiff arm-sweeping mtin stpped feeling like a frced gesture. When I cmpleted the 13 pening mves withut stumbling, a sense f pride warmed my chest. I was n lnger struggling against my bdy, but listening t it. This small win made me believe I culd chip away at the 108 frms, ne mve at a time.
Mnths later, I was invited t share my jurney with beginners f Tai Chi. Standing befre the grup, I demnstrated a few basic mves slwly and smthly fr them, my bdy mving in a relaxed and natural way that I’d never thught pssible befre. I shared hw Tai Chi became a way t calm my busy mind and my daily practice f the 108 frms. Seeing their attentive faces and apprving nds, I felt a deep sense f fulfillment. My stumbling jurney had blmed int smething meaningful, just as a water lily blms frm the mud int light, a quiet gift shared with thers. Versin 2:
Cmmit and imprve: That was the nly path frward. I embraced the instructr’s encuragement and began fcusing nt n perfectin, but n presence. Slwly, breath by breath, mvement by mvement, the stiffness started t disslve int flw. I practiced every mrning, feeling my bdy slwly sften like a willw in a gentle breeze. I learned t see Tai Chi nt as a sequence f pstures t memrize mechanically, but as a mving meditatin. Gradually, the 108 Frms unflded naturally in my every mve, and my instructr even praised me fr hw I’d truly grasped the essence f Tai Chi. 题号
