I packed my family int ur ld car and set ff n a 3,000 km trip frm Sydney t the utback, hping t create lasting memries fr the kids. My plan seemed ambitius — cvering such distances with tw yung kids in the back might sund crazy t a sensible persn.
Fr mst f the jurney, we ften felt annyed, arguing abut the remaining distance and the discmfrt in the car. I’d had utback rad trip memries as a kid and wanted my city-raised children t see the vast pen spaces.
At a bird-hide near Frbes, we watched a swamp with bright green water and dead trees. Eager t share Australian flk stries, I cnfidently tld the kids that a mysterius creature lived there — but stumbled when they asked me fllw-up questins. Their enthusiasm fr the smallest jy kncked me fr six. At a radside mtel that lked like a mvie set, the kids lved being wken by the night trains, cheering each time.
After three days, we reached Brken Hill — a twn dminated by a big slag heap (矿渣堆), just as remarkable as I remembered. Surrunded by kilmeters f mineral-rich land, its streets imply its mining rts. I feared the mineral museum wuld bre the kids, but they yelled with jy, thinking it was real-life Minecraft.
The trip wasn’t fantastic — I even cmplained abut hard mattresses n the bed and small twels. But n Easter mrning, the kids went wild fr a simple egg hunt in ur cheap mtel rm, thrilled t search every crner. I set ut t teach the kids abut the far reaches f ur state, when in fact the kids were the best perspective I culd ask fr all alng.
24.Why did the authr rganize the trip?
A.T explre the lcals’ unique lifestyle.
B.T make shared memries fr the family.
C.T dcument the kids’ expsure t nature.
D.T relive the special utback experiences.

D.It is an ambitius but disappinting attempt.
27.What key message des the authr try t cnvey thrugh the passage?

B.City-raised kids can easily adapt t the utback.

D.The utback ffers mre unique sights than cities.
What if yu culd meet mst f yur daily needs-shpping, wrk, educatin, healthcare-within a 15-minute walk r bike ride frm yur hme? This is the exciting visin f the “15-minute city”, an urban planning cncept that gained glbal attentin years ag. Hwever, putting it int practice has sparked unexpected and fierce ppsitin.
The cncept was ppularized by Mayr Anne Hidalg f Paris and based n the research f French schlar Carls Mren. It suggests a mve frm city planning centered mainly n cars t ne fcused n “chrnic-urbanism”. The gal is t return urban space t peple, with mre parks and streets fr walking. Advcates argue that this mdel addresses multiple crises all at the same time: climate change, scial islatin, and public health.
Despite its apparent benefits, ppnents have misrepresented the idea nline, framing it as a secret gvernment plan t cntrl peple’s free mvement. While these claims are baseless, they have gained supprt, influencing public pinin and making it harder fr cities like Oxfrd and Melburne t carry ut the cncept.
The real issue, hwever, ges deeper than misinfrmatin. It pints t a fundamental prblem in urban innvatin: the difficulty f imagining a life less dependent n the private car. Fr decades, the car has symblized persnal freedm and status. Any plicy that seems t reduce car use, even if it aims t enhance verall quality f life, can make peple feel emtinally upset. This reflects what transprt experts call “car dependency”, a cultural and deep-rted habit that is hard t break.
The situatin mirrrs past urban cnflicts. Fr instance, many peple ppsed creating walking-nly streets in city centers decades ag, but nw, such areas are mstly lved and valued. The experts f a recent study n sustainable transitin cnclude that the battle fr the 15-minute city is nt just abut planning; it’s abut messaging. Success depends nt nly n smart design but als n effectively cnveying its visin f a mre sustainable and human urban future.

      A.Traffic-slwing.B.Mney-wasting.C.Freedm-limiting.D.Tech-demanding.
30.What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
      A.The challenge f a less car-centered life.B.The significance f private cars.
      C.The public’s reactins t a new plicy.D.The definitin f car dependency.
31.What des the experts’ cnclusin imply in the last paragraph?
A.Public pinins are t hard t change.B.Sustainable transitin is the tp pririty.
C.Cmmunicatin matters as much as design.D.Planning shuld send an innvative message.
After spending 62 years abve the Hudsn River, the Tappan Zee Bridge’s heritage lives n belw the water’s surface. The bridge was fully trn dwn, after which its huge chunks f metal and cncrete were cleaned and then drpped int the Atlantic Ocean t start a new life as an artificial reef.
Cral reefs are varied marine ecsystems, ften dubbed as the rainfrests f the sea. When cral reefs are stressed by changes in cnditins, such as temperature, light r nutrients, they expel the algae that live in their tissues, withut which crals’ tissues becme transparent, shwing their white structures, a phenmenn knwn as bleaching. This largely attributes t the sharp decline f cral reefs. It is reprted that we’ve lst 14 percent f the wrld’s cral reefs in the last decade, an equivalent f lsing the whle Great Barrier Reef in 10 years.
It is clear that natural cral reefs are nw in truble. That’s why peple are finding ways t build them frm artificial materials. Artificial reefs aren’t made f cral. They are created by placing large bjects n the cean flr. Smetimes, these bjects are built t be used as reefs. They are ften made f steel and cncrete. A structure can als be recycled as a reef. That’s what happened with the Tappan Zee Bridge. Of all the artificial marine reefs in the wrld, thse made f submerged shipwrecks are the mst cmmn. In 2005, Jim Walsh helped turn a ship called the Carthaginian II int a reef, The Carthaginian II landed n the cean flr mre than a decade ag, Back then, it was just a chunk f metal n a bare patch f sand. Nw the ship is a hme t at least 75 marine animal species. “It’s amazing t see hw much life is n that ship,” Walsh says.
While artificial reefs bring benefits in many ways, they aren’t perfect fr all situatins, as they can damage natural habitats if nt carefully cnstructed and ptentially lead t a sharp increase in turism activity that spills ver int surrunding areas, including natural reefs.
32.Which is clsest in meaning t “expel” in paragraph 2?
      A.Capture.B.Absrb.C.Cntain.D.Release.
33.What can we learn abut the Carthaginian II?

B.It is a new habitat repurpsed fr marine life.
C.It was specially created as a turist attractin.
D.It is a sunken ship recycled int a natural reef.
34.What is the authr’s attitude tward artificial reefs?
      A.Cautius.B.Dismissive.C.Favrable.D.Dubtful.
35.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A.Oceanic Wnders: Frm Structures t Treasures.
B.Tappan Zee Bridge: A New Life Beneath the Sea.
C.Artificial Reefs: Slutins t Bidiversity Decline.
      D.Underwater Hmes: Balancing Dynamic Ecsystems.
With travel n the rise, mre families are planning t take their hme life n the rad, whether it’s fr a weekend r a lnger trip. Traveling with kids can be stressful — with all thse suitcases and cries f “Are we there yet?” 36
Invlving yung children in planning a trip might sund silly, but it’s far mre valuable than it seems: “Yu shuldn’t expect a 4-year-ld t spend eight hurs in museums,” says Waldn, a family travel expert. “It’s really smart fr parents t think like their kid and realize,‘ 37 ’” That attitude helps parents avid terrible situatins that may ruin the day.
38 If a little ne is int dinsaurs, perhaps yu’ll want t check ut a city’s Natural Histry Museum. If they lve animals, maybe there’s a way t include a visit t a farm r an aquarium (水族馆).
One f Waldn’s favurite ways t get yunger kids excited abut a trip is reading. “Bks are perfect fr little armchair travellers,” she says. “ 39 ” Befre a recent trip t Puert Ric, Waldn read her kids a bk abut a frg native t the island. Afterwards, her daughters gt really excited t hear this little frg singing at night.
Peple ften think the trip is ging t be ne Instagram wrthy mment after anther, but that never happens. 40 When kids are invlved, they can becme invested in getting thrugh thse prblems. They als learn t wrk things ut tgether as a family.
      A.Mst children really enjy challenges.
B.Actually, n family trip ges withut prblems.
C.Hwever, it can als be a highly rewarding activity.
D.That way, we’re getting mre f that lcal experience.
