I’ve always lved bks. When I was a child, I wuld bring them everywhere. I became a reader in the
absence f digital audibks, and they never really entered my wrld f reading. Nevertheless, with the rise f
smartphnes, audibks have explded in ppularity, and as with any new interest, new criticisms have risen in
respnse — audibks aren’t really bks, and that listening t them isn’t really reading.
I’ll admit, I used t think that audibks “didn’t cunt” because yu culd listen t them passively. One f
my biggest annyances is wandering during an audibk and realizing I have n idea where I stpped paying
attentin. And I’m als still a print bk lver — I hate ebks, and I nly use them when it’s tugh t get a bk
      any ther way.
But I have grwn t lve audibks fr the distinct advantages they ffer — fr example, sme have vice
actrs d distinctive vices fr different characters, r actually put meldy t sngs that nly have lyrics in the
written text. A great example is Cary Elwes’ As Yu Wish: Incnceivable Tales frm the Making f The Princess
Bride. Elwes narrates the bk himself, and brings ther actrs frm the film like Mandy Patinkin and Rbin
Wright frm the film t narrate their wn sectins. That’s just an experience yu’re never ging t get with a
      paperback (平装书).
      Smetimes I prefer an audibk. It’s the nly way t read if I’m n a lng drive r if I want t d multitasks.
Smetimes I prefer a bk. I lve the way bks feel in my hands, I lve flipping pages, and I lve cllecting

      bkmarks.
Engage with bks hwever yu want. Buy them, get them frm the library, brrw them frm friends,
dwnlad them nline, it desn’t matter. Dn’t we have better uses fr ur time than t pick apart hw ther peple
      take in infrmatin?
      4. What is paragraph 1 mainly abut?
      A. An issue abut audibks. B. An pinin abut print bks.
      C. A reading stry in childhd. D. A ppular belief f digital reading.
      5. What did the authr think f audibks befre?

      B. Listening t them was a passive invlvement.
      C. He knew where he was when listening t them.
      D. He thught it easier t find them than print bks.

Twice a year, when hibernating (冬眠的) animals like bears and squirrels are either curling up fr a deep sleep
r stretching their way int spring, migratry birds are getting ready t embark n epic jurneys ver land and sea.
And in ding s, they play a crucial rle in keeping nature in balance.
On their fall jurney, sme, like the tiny Arctic tern, leave the dark cld Arctic fr the winter, flying all the
way t the Antarctic Circle, clcking up a rund trip f sme 90,000 kilmeters. This extensive jurney makes
them the wrld-recrd hlders fr the lngest migratin rute in the animal kingdm. Anther champin is the
bar-tailed gdwit. A 5-mnth-ld bird hlds the Guinness recrd fr the lngest nnstp flight, having cvered
13,560 kilmeters in 11 days and ne hur. But fr sme species, climate change is making such a feat less likely.
Migrating birds use the sun, stars, castlines and large bdies f water t guide them n their jurneys acrss
      第 5页/共 19页
the wrld. But sme places where they stp t rest and refuel alng the casts are being changed by flds
cnnected t rising sea levels. Small crustaceans, which are an imprtant fd surce fr migratry birds, can
struggle t build their shells and bnes in ceans made mre acidic (酸性的) by having t absrb mre carbn
dixide. And this has a knck-n effect n migratry birds. Withut sufficient fd, they are less likely t survive
tugh jurneys r successfully reprduce (繁殖).
Birds, like humans, are als threatened by the increasing intensity and frequency f extreme weather events
such as strms. Strng winds can drag them dwn and kill them. Equally, climate change can impact hw
migratry birds behave. Warmer temperatures can remve the threat f fd lack, leading birds t shrten their
rutes r nt flying back t their riginal habitat at all.
This, in turn, can lead t cnflicts ver fd between migratry birds and resident animals. While sme
migratry birds, such as the Arctic tern, have dealt with strng winds by expending mre energy n their jurneys,
ther species have yielded t the pressures f human activity. One such bird was the slender-billed curlew, which
was declared extinct in 2024. Researchers believe the breed failed t adapt t habitat lss.
      8. Why are the tiny Arctic tern and bar-tailed gdwit mentined?
      A. T intrduce the tpic. B. T make an advertisement.
      C. T clarify the miscnceptin. D. T infrm a fact.
      9. What fundamentally threatens birds’ survival and reprductin in migratin?
      A. Humans destrying castal stps.
      B. Cmpetitin with resident species.
      C. Carbn emissins breaking fd chains.
      D. Rising temperatures changing flight paths.
      10. What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs?
      A. Humans fear extreme weather events.
      B. Migratry birds prefer new habitats.
      C. Migratin jurneys are full f surprises.
      D. Birds aren’t all abnrmally migrating.
      11. What is the best title fr the text?

Anxius abut returning t wrk after a career break? Yu pst abut yur trubles nline and tw strangers
reply. Stranger 1: “I understand yur anxiety; yur curage matters.” Stranger 2: “I’ve struggled with the same
prblem. Just jump in!” Studies shw mst find Stranger 1 mre empathetic — but it’s ften a chatbt. Surprised?
Research reveals chatbts frequently utperfrm humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study fund 80% f
patients preferred chatbts’ respnse t dctrs’ advice. Similarly a 2024 experiment shwed even when humans
were paid t create thughtful replies, they still fell shrt f ChatGPT’s sympathy.
The secret t the chatbts’ success lies in mistakes humans make. When humans see smene in pain, we
ften share persnal stries (“I’ve struggled t”) r rush t give advice (“D this!”). While well-meaning, rushing
t share pinins can minimize smene’s pain, and shifting the fcus t urselves weakens hpe t be heard.
Chatbts, hwever, avid these errrs. Withut persnal experiences r urgency t slve prblems, they fcus
entirely n the speaker. In a 2024 study, Micrsft’s Bing Chat scred higher than humans by using a three-step
methd: explaining peple’s struggles, acknwledging and justifying hw they might feel, and asking fllw-up
      questins.
Humans can als adpt similar strategies like “lping fr understanding”—repeating thers’ wrds in their
wn terms and checking crrectness (“D I have that right?”). Chatbts are natural lpers, and when humans learn
it, they better understand thers’ emtins and make them feel heard. These skills extend beynd strengthening
family and friend bnds: dzens f studies shw managers and emplyers using such methds tend t have mre
      lyal, effective, and prductive emplyees.
Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits. Chatbts repeat frmulaic (公式化的) respnses (“I hear
yu”) that feel rbtic ver time. They can’t feel r truly care fr us, and studies shw mst human beings still
want t engage with ther humans. Sme f the bugs f human cnnectin are als, in fact, features. Chatbts can’t
rll their eyes r leave ur texts unanswered. But the fact that we ften must earn human empathy, and that it
cmes frm limited beings wh sacrifice (牺牲) t be there fr us, is part f its beauty.
      12. What is the authr’s purpse in quting the tw strangers’ replies?
      A. T cmpare tw ways f giving advice.
      B. T intrduce a psychlgical phenmenn.
      C. T suggest hw t vercme anxiety.
      第 7页/共 19页
      D. T criticize human’s cmmunicatin.
      13. What des the underlined phrase “fell shrt f” mean in paragraph 2?
      A. Differed frm. B. Failed t match.
      C. Did better than. D. Were in need f.
      14. What can humans learn frm chatbts’ empathy strategies?
      A. T prvide direct slutins.
      B. T stress shared stries.
      C. T crrect speakers’ mistakes.
      D. T avid self-centered respnses.
      15. What des the authr want t say in the last paragraph?
      A. AI is an impressive listener. B. Human empathy is valuable.
      C. AI respnds t human’s pain calmly. D. There are prblems with human interactin.
