Yu have prbably had the experience f waking up in the middle f the night with an idea. It was such a gd ne that yu tld yurself t remember it the next mrning. But, like the memry f yur dreams, it fades fast away. One practical step yu can take nw is t keep a pencil r pad by yur bed. Smetimes, yu can als carry a pcket ntebk s that ideas that strike yu while waiting fr smene r travelling n a train can be recrded. Later, yu can transfer these jttings t yur main ntebk.
Apart frm extending memry, the practice f keeping a ntebk f thse materials has ne fairly bvius further benefit. The labr f cpying them ut gives yu ccasin t reflect deeply n them. As yu slwly write, yu have t pay attentin t bth the exact frm and the cntent f what is being said. The act f writing impresses the wrds mre deeply n yur mind.
There are tw imprtant principles in keeping a ntebk as a tl fr creative thinking. First, write dwn ideas in the rder they cme t yu. Give each idea a shrt title and, if pssible, add the date. D nt try t rganize everything t carefully, such as putting ntes n cards r arranging them in alphabetical rder. The secnd principle is t nte dwn whatever impresses yu as stimulating, interesting r memrable. At this stage, it des nt matter whether the idea is right r wrng. What matters mst is that it interests yu. As Shakespeare nce said, “N prfit grws where n pleasure is taken.”
In this frm, yur ntebk is a very useful tl fr creative thinking n a variety f subjects that cncern yu, fr this methd brings tgether very diverse materials. When yu lk thrugh yur ntebk, yu will begin t ntice varius grups f links and cnnectins. It is the mixing f these unrelated ideas—bringing tgether things that usually d nt g tgether—that makes yur ntebk a surce f new ideas.

It’s slwing yu dwn. 37 In fact, it will prbably take yu lnger t finish tw prjects when yu’re jumping back and frth than it wuld t finish each ne separately. The same is true even f driving: drivers take lnger t reach their destinatins when chatting n cell phnes. In a wrd, switching between tasks leads t a lss in prductivity.
38 The human brain can handle tw cmplicated tasks withut t much truble. Add a third task, hwever, and it can cause yu t intrduce errrs whatever yu’re wrking n, especially if ne mre f yur activities invlve much critical thinking.
It’s stressing yu ut. Researchers fund emplyees wh received a steady stream f ffice email stayed in a “high alert (戒备状态)” mde with higher heart rates. It’s nt nly the physical act f multitasking that causes stress. 39 If yu d prly n an exam because yu study while watching matches n TV, that can certainly bring a lt f stress.
It can be dangerus. Texting r talking n a cell phne while driving is as dangerus as driving drunk. 40 Peple wh use mbile devices while walking are less likely t lk befre stepping int a crsswalk. And in ne study, ne in five teenagers wh went t the emergency rm after a car accident admitted they were using a smartphne at the time f the accident.
A.It can lead yu t make mistakes.
B.It’s the cnsequences, as well.
C.Then hw t avid multitasking?
D.Why shuld yu stp multitasking nw?
E.Multitasking des harm t yur critical thinking.
F.Nt just using a phne while driving puts yu at risk.
G.Cntrary t ppular belief, multitasking desn’t save time.
