The researchers recruited 52 men and 52 wmen aged 20 t 30 and randmly assigned them t have a 500-calrie breakfast rich in either refined r unrefined carbhydrates. The refined carbs breakfast included a French baguette made frm industrially milled flur, jam, apple r range juice, and tea r cffee with sugar available while the unrefined carbs meal was stnegrund whlemeal bread with butter and cheese, an range r apple, and tea r cffee withut sugar. The scientists measured bld sugar levels f vlunteers befre and after they ate and then tk headshts f the participants, fllwed by raters estimating hw attractive the individuals lked.
Refined carbhydrates can prduce spikes in bld sugar, which the bdy cunters by releasing insulin. The respnse can drive sugar levels t lw, a cnditin called hypglycemia and affect bld flw and skin appearance. In the study, nly the refined carbs breakfast prduced hypglycemia.
David Perrett, a prfessr wh has studied facial cues fr health, said there shuld be n surprise that diet affects attractiveness. Fruit and vegetables imprved attractiveness by increasing cartenids in the skin, he said, while high-sugar diets did the ppsite.
“The authrs suggest that the refined carbhydrate culd be affecting peripheral bld flw,” Perrett said. “Bld flw can change skin appearance rapidly. One can see the impact within secnds in the case f feeling sick when the bld drains frm the skin. We fund that mst peple lk healthier, and mre attractive, when their skin clr reflects a slight, rise in xygenated bld.”
Asked what advice she wuld give t beauty seeker, Berticat said: “Refined carbhydrates have a negative impact n health and that’s reasn enugh t limit their cnsumptin.”

With rapid advances in medicine, human dctrs can perfrm amputatins, r remval f an arm r leg after a serius injury t prevent infectin r disease, significantly imprving chances f survival. But humans are nt alne in ding them. New research shws that Flrida carpenter ants can d the same.
Scientists said they bserved these ants treating injured ants in tw ways. They either cleaned the wund using their muthparts r amputated the limb, r leg, by biting it ff. When it was further up the leg, they always amputated. When it was further dwn, they never amputated.
Frank, the lead writer f the research, said that the study describes fr the first time hw a nn-human animal uses amputatins n anther individual t save their life. He mentined that the ants’ “medical system” t care fr the injured is the mst sphisticated in the animal kingdm and cmpares well t human medicine.
The researchers studied injuries t the upper part f the leg, the femur, and the lwer part, the tibia. Frank said hw the ants decide between amputating the leg r spending mre time caring fr the wund is unknwn, but they d knw why the treatment differs, which has t d with the flw f hemlymph (血淋巴). Injuries further dwn the leg have an increased hemlymph flw and harmful bacteria can enter the bdy within five minutes. An amputatin wuld nt help infectin after that time. Injuries further up the leg have a much slwer hemlymph flw, giving enugh time fr timely and effective amputatins which needs at least 40 minutes and smetimes mre than three hurs. The study fund that after an upper leg injury, an ant amputated has a survival rate f ver 90%. Fr lwer ne where just cleaning was perfrmed, the survival rate was abut 75%.
S why d ants d these amputatins? Just t save resurces! Frank nted that if an ant culd be saved with little effrt t remain prductive, there is a very high value f ding s. But fr a heavily injured individual, the ants will just leave her behind t die.
12. Why are amputatins by human dctrs mentined in Paragraph 1?
A. T illustrate the humans’ rapid develpments in medicine.
B. T emphasize the significance f amputatins in saving lives.
C. T bring up the same amazing capacity f ants.
D. T shw the detailed prcess f amputatins.
13. What did the chice f care depend n?
A. The severity f the injury. B. The lcatin f the injury.
C. The type f the injury. D. The curability f the injury.
14. What can we infer frm Frank’s wrds in Paragraph 3?
A. The “medical system” f ants is the mst sphisticated in the animal kingdm.
B. This is the first time that amputatins n ther individuals have been described.
C. Amputatins in ant wrld are as impressive as that in human wrld.
D. Bth ants and humans are willing t care fr the injured.
15. Which can best describe the amputatin f Flrida carpenter ants?
A. Efficient. B. One-f-a-kind. C. Cst-effective. D. Innvative.
