It was back in 1990, and I was n the east cast f Spitsbergen, the largest island f Svalbard, a Nrwegian archipelag. Svalbard has a high cncentratin f plar bears in the spring, gathering fr the mating seasn. When a bear is hungry, it essentially becmes a meat-seeking missile — it can smell yu frm many miles away. If yu’re unwashed in a dark tent ut n the flating sea ice, yu can lk and smell like an versized walrus (海象).
Fr several nights, I stayed alert and kept waking up t what I thught was the sund f a bear in the snw. Checking was tugh — my tent was cated in ice, which wuld fall when I mved. Tuching the utside f my sleeping bag t lng culd cause frstbite. The easiest way t check was t unzip the tent, stay in my sleeping bag, and peek ut fr a 360-degree view. It was cld, uncmfrtable — and ften pintless.
I made prridge in my mther’s ld saucepan and left the camping stve n t melt snw fr my Therms. When I unzipped the tent, I was shcked t see a full-grwn plar bear just an arm’s length away, I had a laded gun, but it was behind me — reaching fr it risked an attack. S my hand instinctively reached fr the nearest cmbat-ready thing I culd see: the prridge encrusted saucepan. I hit the bear hard n the head with the pan. It flinched, tilted its head, and seemed cnfused — the lud bang startled us bth. Then it turned and ran ff int the distance.
As a yung adventurer I used t feel it was me against my surrundings, but then I realized I culd wrk with nature and bears have mre f a right t be there than me. There have been times, alne in the Arctic, when I have felt mre in tune with the wrld than anywhere else. It breaks my heart that, because f the rapidly melting sea ice, I have witnessed a wilderness habitat that thers may never see.
      4. What des “a meat-seeking missile” suggest abut plar bears?
      A. Their explsive physical pwer.B. Their deadly hunting accuracy.
      C. Their ability t see prey clearly.D. Their seasnal migratin instincts.

      C. T illustrate his sleeping prblems.D. T highlight an unexpected encunter.
      6. Why did the authr chse the saucepan t fight the bear?
      A. It was within easy reach.B. It culd make lud nises.
      C. It wuldn’t hurt the bear.D. It culd surprise the bear.
      7. What transfrmatin did the authr underg ver time?
      A. Frm fearing bears t prtecting them.B. Frm hating adventures t lving them.

In the age f large language mdels (LLMs) and generative AI, we are witnessing an unprecedented transfrmatin in hw knwledge is prduced, spread and cnsumed.
LLMs, we are tld, make us mre efficient, simplify cmplex wrk, autmate bring tasks and allw us t fcus n what matters. But as we feel surprised at their capabilities, a pressing cncern emerges: Are these mdels genuinely bsting efficiency, r are they erding ur capacity fr independent thught, judgment and critical reflectin?
Efficiency is nt a neutral term. The current narrative arund generative AI treats efficiency as prgress. It suggests that the faster smething is dne, the better. But faster is nt always better. And nt everything that can be autmated shuld be.
The ppular belief is that LLMs allw humans t assign repetitive wrk t machines and reserve their energy fr mre reflective tasks, but the ppsite is ften true. As the mre intellectual labr — writing, summarizing and decisin-making, fr example — is handed ver t AI, the less we will engage with it urselves. Instead f reserving ur thughtfulness fr higher tasks, we will increasingly lse the pprtunities, and perhaps even the ability, t think critically.
S what d we really mean by “efficiency”? If it means shrtening the time it takes t write a reprt, perhaps we have succeeded. But if it means replacing the intellectual effrt that creates depth, cherence and reflectin, then it’s nt a gain; it’s a lss. The mment we accept LLMs as thught substitutes, rather than thught aids, we begin t wrsen the very cnditins under which human reasning thrives: questining, dialgue, uncertainty and cntradictin.
There is n turning back the presence f LLMs in ur lives. But we can chse hw t live with them. The questin is nt whether they will think fr us, but whether we will let them define what it means t think at all. Efficiency, in the true sense, shuld nt be abut ding mre with less thught. It shuld be abut ding better, with deeper attentin, strnger ethics and sustained human insight.
      8. What des the underlined wrd “erding” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Changing.B. Imprving.C. Destrying.D. Expanding.
      9. What d LLMs lead t, accrding t paragraph 4?
      A. We get mre reflective labr.B. We d independent thinking less.
      C. We engage in mre repetitive tasks.D. We reduce ur wrk efficiency indeed.
      10. What des the authr advcate abut ur using LLMs?
      A. Putting efficiency first.B. Reducing intellectual effrt.
      C. Achieving mre with less time.D. Increasing human engagement.
      11. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
      A. T describe the fast develpment f LLMs.
      B. T reflect n the negative effects f LLMs.
      C. T questin the necessity f pursuing efficiency.
      D. T challenge the traditinal definitin f efficiency.
      【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. B
      D
Many peple wh spt a rubber duck n a prgrammer’s desk might assume it is just a ty r a simple decratin. In fact, the rubber duck serves as a practical tl t help slve prblems. Prgrammers explain cde r prblems in detail t the rubber duck. By describing the prblem alud step by step, they gain a clearer understanding f the cde’s flw and structure, leading t better prblem-slving. This methd is called “rubber duck debugging (调试)”.
The term “rubber duck debugging” was first intrduced in the 1999 bk The Pragmatic Prgrammer by Andrew Hunt and David Thmas. It riginated in a practice amng prgrammers f explaining their cde prblems t bjects t find mistakes mre easily. Since then, the cncept has becme widely recgnized in prgramming culture, inspiring similar debugging techniques and discussins in sftware develpment cmmunities.
While rubber duck debugging riginated fr prgrammers, the cncept can be applied in many different cntexts. Research by US schlars Lgan Firella and Richard Meyer shws that when students learn the material in a lessn as if they were ging t teach it t thers, they develp a deeper and mre persistent understanding f the material. Teaching thers frces us t break the material dwn int cnceptual pieces, integrate it with ur existing knwledge, and rganize it in lgical ways. That’s why ur little yellw friend is s helpful: In explaining the prblem alud t yur rubber duck, yu are teaching it as well.
Thugh the term “rubber duck debugging” specifically refers t explaining the cde t a rubber duck the actual presence f a rubber duck is nt crucial t the prcess — any bject r even a persn can serve as a substitute fr it. What matters is externalizing yur thughts and clearly explaining the prblem alud. By adpting the technique, yu can gain new insights and perspectives, imprve yur prblem-slving abilities, and vercme challenges mre effectively.
S, next time yu’re stuck n a prblem, try turning t a little yellw duck.
      12. Why d prgrammers use rubber ducks?
      A. T decrate their wrkplace.B. T relieve their wrk pressure.
      C. T help fix cding issues efficiently.D. T assist in simplifying cding tasks.
      13. What des paragraph 2 mainly tell us abut rubber duck debugging?
      A. Its majr limitatins.B. Its brad applicatins.
      C. Its backgrund infrmatin.D. Its peratinal prcedures.
      14. What principle des “rubber duck debugging” indicate?
      A. Analyzing mistakes is a great way t imprve.
      B. Externalizing thughts can enhance ur learning.
      C. Detailed explanatins can imprve cncentratin.
      D. Lgical thinking can help slve prblems effectively.
      15. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title?
      A. Rubber Duck Debugging: A Prgrammer’s Trick
      B. T Teach Is t Learn: The Secret f a Little Rubber Duck
      C. The Histry and Applicatin f a Prgramming Methd
