When I was 16, my father, in a burst f entrepreneurial spirit, bught an ld guesthuse in ur village and decided t turn it int a luxury htel. At the early stages, he experimented with everything. My dad had never dipped a te int the wrld f hspitality himself, yet he had a visin f what guests might desire. His standards were exceedingly high and he firmly believed that hard wrk was the glden ticket t achieving them.
Fr a mnth that summer, my name was n the duty list as waitress at breakfast and dinner, which included laying the tables and glass plishing. This gave me the middle f the day t hit the bks because my schl reprt had nt lived up t my father's high expectatins.
Like all the ther waitresses, I was equipped with a neat little unifrm and instructins t treat the guests as thugh they were distinguished guests in my wn hme. Althugh I did nt feel cmfrtable with this, I kept my feelings under wraps. Instead,I fcused intently n perfrming the jb as well as, if nt better than, the lder girls.
I sn learned hw t handle the tw mst frightening elements in the kitchen: the dishwasher and the chef, Grdn. He had an impressive chef's hat and an ability t lse his temper fr n clear reasn. His breath was strng and fishy, and I always grabbed the dishes he set dwn with a frbidding expressin n my face which was transfrmed int a charming smile between tw battlefields.
Breakfast waitressing was mre enjyable than the dinner shift. The guests came walking aimlessly int the dining rm frm seven thirty nwards, their eyes lighting up at the breathtaking view f the sea and islands framed by ur dining-rm windws. If the day lked prmising, I wuld nte dwn requests fr bats and packed lunches alng with their breakfast rders. It was a matter f pride t me that everyne gt their rder quickly, and I tk pleasure in my ability t get n with the peple at each table. It was funny hw differently peple behaved in the evening, talking with luder, clder vices, and nt always returning my smile.

Psychlgical science is full f interesting tpics, many f which tell a cherent picture f human nature, but sme f which create seemingly cntradictry stries. A case in pint is the tricky and misunderstd intersectin between strength-based science and the research n narcissism(自恋)
There is nw cnvincing evidence t shw that narcissism is n the rise, especially in ur yuth. Sme researchers have gne s far as t say that it is ccurring in epidemic prprtins, with abut 25% f yung peple shwing symptms f narcissism. The inflated eg f Generatin Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity wrship, ut-f-cntrl cnsumerism, materialism… perhaps even a new type f president.
We are crrect t be cncerned abut this phenmenn but ur fear that all kids are ptential narcissists has caused an unhelpful cunter-reactin t appraches that seek t make ur children and teens feel gd abut themselves.
In my wn research n strength-based parenting, it is cmmn fr peple t wrngly label this apprach as a recipe fr self-entitlement. Their argument seems t be that a child wh knws their strengths will autmatically view themselves as better than everyne else. It is argued that the self-assurance that cmes with identifying and using their psitive qualities will make a child arrgant, selfish and uncaring. Earnest cnfidence abut ne's strengths is categrized as ver-cnfidence; desirable self-knwledge is branded as excessive self-admiratin.
Why des this ccur? It's partly because mre is knwn abut narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychlgy has largely stayed within the limit f academic jurnals r has been applied nly within certain cntexts such as the wrkplace, research n narcissism has made its way int the mass media and int ur cllective cnsciusness. The New Yrk Times nted that narcissism is a favred“g-t” tpic and that peple everywhere are diagnsing thers with it.
The fear that a strength-based apprach will cause narcissism als ccurs because we unwittingly fall prey t binary (非此即彼的) thinking. We mistakenly believe that ne cannt be bth cnfident and humble. We fcus n Dnald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mther Teresa. There's n way that Gandhi and Mther Teresa culd have achieved what they did withut cnfidence in their strengths, and yet they are bth pillars f humility and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-fcus is the same as a self-fcus, we fail t entertain the idea that peple wh knw their strengths are, actually, mre likely t be pr-scial and fcus n helping thers.
It's tempting t cnclude that every yung persn is at risk f becming a narcissist but I'd like t stand up fr the thusands f yung kids I have wrked with wh are caring, thughtful and humble— even when they use their strengths.
      28. What can we learn frm the passage?
      A. Apprximately a quarter f kids are ptential narcissists.
      B. Bth strengths psychlgy and narcissism are difficult t understand.
      C. An increasing number f yuth are shwing an inflated sense f self.
      D. Knwing the kids' strengths has an ppsite effect n making them feel gd.
29 Why are teenagers' strengths ften mistaken fr narcissism?
      A. There is a lack f strengths in ur cllective cnsciusness.
      B. Strengths psychlgy is less accessible t the general public.
      C. Academic jurnals and mass media reprt mre n narcissism.
      D. A number f peple are diagnsed with narcissism by dctrs.
      30. What's the authr's attitude twards strength-based parenting?

      D
Fr the arts “t mean mre, t mre peple”, as Arts Cuncil England(ACE) argues that they shuld, wuld be excellent. Music, drama, dance, visual arts, petry and literature are amng the mst precius human achievements. T live in a cuntry in which these are mre widely shared and enjyed wuld be prf that we are making prgress. The pint is nt t entertain r educate peple, r bring cmmunities tgether. Nr is it all abut bsting jbs and investment.Imaginatin has intrinsic (内在的) value, and research carried ut by ACE in the curse f preparing its 10-year strategy shwed that peple frm all walks f life value and get pleasure frm cultural activities.
Psitining itself as a develpment agency, ACE will nw hpe t win gvernment backing fr a change f directin that rients it away frm the biggest and mst famus natinal institutins and twards the twns, villages and grassrts rganizatins that shuld be similarly deserving f attentin. There, it imagines a rle fr itself“building the identity and prsperity f places,” bringing prfessinal artists tgether with vluntary grups, particular in areas that have previusly nt been well represented n the cultural map.
ACE's chair, Sir Nichlas Serta, qutes the first wrld war centenary prject devised by the artist, Jeremy Deller, and theatre directr, Rufus Nrris, as the mdel f what he wants his rganizatin t be abut. By acting as sldiers, and rchestrating their encunters with members f the public in settings acrss England, the artists succeeded in“disslving the barriers between artists and audiences.”
T what extent the visin that ACE wants t prmte cultural engagement s as t transfrm the passive spectatrs int the active participants is realized will depend in part n whether ACE's ambitins catch the gvernment's interest sufficiently t influence the upcming spending review, and prvide a cunterweight t the scrn (轻视) that is regularly pured n the humanities.Arund £400m has been cut frm lcal gvernment arts budgets since 2010, and ACE cannt meet the financial needs. The clsure f yuth clubs and live music venues, and grwing financial pressures linked t the prperty market, are amng ther reasns fr this wrrisme narrwing f pprtunities. S far Bris Jhnsn has ffered few signs that he has in mind a starring rle fr the arts in pst-Brexit Britain, althugh 2022's Festival f Brexit is ne such event. ACE's plan shuld bst the prfile f all thse, in gvernment and utside, wh are arguing fr mre.
      32. What is the purpse f making arts available t mre peple?
      A. T cnslidate varius cmmunities. B. T maximize the natural value f art.
      C. T create jb pprtunities fr artists.D. T enlighten peple frm all walks f life.
      33. What place is ACE mst likely t prmte the arts accrding t the passage?
      A. Rural settlements. B. Lcal gvernments.
      C. Cmmercial centers. D. Natinal rganizatin.
      34. Which f the fllwing statements wuld Sir Nichlas Serta mst prbably agree with?
      A. Artists and audiences can create and enjy the arts tgether withut barriers.
      B. Audiences with little educatin can als gain pleasure frm cultural activities.
      C. The sldiers and vlunteers shuld vividly shw scenes abut the First Wrld War.
      D. Science, technlgy and maths are mre imprtant than humanities and arts nwadays.
      35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
      A. The British gvernment has dne enugh t prmte arts.
      B. Fr the arts t get revitalized mre extensive effrts are needed.
      C. ACE shuld narrw the financial gap left by the lcal gvernment.
      D. Many perfrming venues have clsed due t the rising prperty market.

The Hardest Nvel I' ve Ever Read
Fr the last three mnths, I have glared at its fat heavy frm n my flr with a vague sense f persnal failure. I have pened Ulysses twice, determined t fir: sh it, and managed t get all the way t page 46. 36
37 I like the cmmunity this bk has created, its inherent sense f freedm and celebratin f all things rude and true. I like that the style and language allw fr readers t chse hw they read it —— sme recmmend skipping chapter three, thers suggest reading it nly after reading ABOUT it but I still, get stuck.
Why d I get stuck? 38 On the“Mst Difficult Nvels” list n the Gdreads website,Jyce takes the tp tw spts, with Ulysses ranking first and Finnegans Wake fllwing it. I think what is restricting me t page 46 is the language: the big fat burst f Chaucerian English with slang and jaunty dialgue that, while entertaining me, is als leaving me a little lst.
There are a few ther“wrthy” wrks f literature I have yet t read, including Infinite Jest and War and Peace. 39 I really. want t lve Ulysses. I feel deeply frustrated that I can't finish it, all the while appreciating its uniqueness, weightiness and special“Jyceness”.
The English writer Virginia Wlf thught Ulysses was nnsense as she cmplained in her diaries abut the pressure t finish reading it. On the cntrary, Vladimir Nabkv, the authr wh wrte Llita expressed deep lve fr it. 40 I have read it similar t a lng marriage(smething unpleasant, big reward at the end), mdern Jazz-fusin (an innvative genre) and bxing match with neself(wanting t punch yurself in the face), which is hw I felt by page 46.
Sme peple lve Ulysses, s where am I getting wrng? My ultimate hpe is that the struggle will be wrth the effrt and I can prceed victrius nt page 800 r s, n my third, furth, eighteenth try. Smething tells me 1 will get there in the end.
      A. I'm nt entirely sure myself.
      D. A lt f them are weighty tmes(巨著), but I like big bks.
      C. It seems that reading Ulysses is a big different experience fr everyne.
      D. I have read s little bth times that I have never bthered using a bkmark.
      E. Even when-staring at pages withut absrbing a wrd, I thught nice thughts abut it.
      F. They, hwever, nly cause me a slight sense f shame that I have nt read r enjyed them.
      G. I have been amused and charmed by the first tw r three chapters, and then puzzled and bred.
