Diving is exciting yet dangerus, which is why rganisatins like PADI ffer training curses t ensure underwater safety. Mst divers nly cmplete the basic Open Water Diver training, but Mia’s ambitins sared (急升) higher. Inspired by her mther, wh became an Open Water Diver in high schl, Mia embarked n (开始从事) her diving jurney at age 10, the minimum age requirement.
Mia’s determinatin shne thrugh as she earned her Open Water Diver certificate despite the challenging cnditins f Rhde Island’s cld ceans. Mia frmed a tight bnd with her diving teachers, wh were impressed with her energy and drive. “She sets her mind t smething and she gets it dne,” said Seamus Hastings, ne f her instructrs.
Over the next tw years, Mia kept wrking at it. PADI curses invlve diving practice, but they ften include mre nrmal class wrk, t, including studying and tests. Mia tk several ther curses, where she learned different skills, including first aid, hw t find her way underwater, and hw t identify fish. Mia finished 78 dives — far exceeding the 50 required fr Master Scuba Diver status. Her mther, serving as her diving partner, accmpanied her n this jurney.
After travelling t Mexic fr her first night dive, she quickly cmpleted the necessary training fr her Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver curses. The Rescue Diver curse prved particularly challenging, demanding Mia t demnstrate her ability t rescue an injured diver after cmpleting three severe dives in ne day, including a deep dive t 58 feet.
Mia says she feels prud t have becme a Master Scuba Diver. But she desn’t plan t stp there. She’s interested in getting mre training as a diver. In the future, she hpes t becme a marine bilgist. She’s particularly interested in tagging and tracking sharks!

Every year, Arctic terns migrate (迁徙) frm the Arctic t the Antarctic- a rund trip f abut 80,000 kilmeters. New research finds that these far-flying birds use just a few select rutes fr their travels.
“The Arctic tern is well-knwn t peple as a recrd hlder. It hlds the wrld recrd fr the lngest migratin f any animal, and therefre interacts with a variety f ecsystems alng the way,” lead authr Janna Wng says.
“They are an indicatr species that can tell us s much abut the different ecsystems that they travel thrugh,” Wng cntinues.“ If they dn’t make it t their destinatin in ne year, then yu knw there might be an envirnmental prblem smewhere alng their rute. ”
Glbally, Arctic terns are reducing. Their crssing such a lng distance has made it hard fr researchers t see where the prblem is. “These birds are difficult t study because they are either living in plar envirnments, r n the g,” Wng says.
S in rder t track them, Wng and her clleagues attached light-level gelcatrs t the legs f 53 Arctic terns. These gelcatrs are actually small cmputers that recrd surrunding light intensities (强度). “ The length f daylight can tell us the latitude (纬度),while the time f slar nn can tell us the lngitude. S we are able t judge psitins f the birds,” Wng says.
Researchers cmpared the rutes taken by the birds they fllwed and the migratin timing t ther Arctic terns that had previusly been tracked. They determined terns in different areas all end up taking similar rutes.
Sme ther seabirds als use the same paths, which suggests that the rutes aren’t specific just t the Arctic terns and that prtecting them may be beneficial t ther species.
8. What are Arctic terns famus fr accrding t the text?
A. Their lng-distance migratin.
B. Their influence n ther species.
C. Their cntributin t different ecsystems.
D. Their ability t survive in plar climates.

A. They prefer t travel individually.
B. They may cause envirnmental prblems.
C. They change their final destinatins
D. They help us learn abut ecsystems alng their rute
10. Why is it difficult fr researchers t study Arctic terns?
A. They can’t find Arctic terns’ habitats.
B. They can hardly get access t Arctic terns.
C. They knw very little abut Arctic terns’ migratin rutes.
D. They live in different areas all ver the wrld.
11. Where is this text mst likely frm?
A. A nvel.B. A guidebk.C. A scientific jurnal.D. A health magazine.

“A mth (飞蛾) t a flame” is ften used t indicate an inescapable attractin, yet it is a strange example f animal behavir that cntinues t cnfuse peple tday. Scientists have raised a number f theries ver the years t explain why. One hlds that insects flying at night are fllwing their nature t fly twards the brightest spt in their field f visin, which they mistake fr the sky. Anther suggests that insects are trying t warm themselves with the heat prduced by the light. The mst ppular thery, thugh, is that insects are cnfusing lights with the mn r ther celestial bdies (天体) that they nrmally use t navigate.
T find ut the real reasn, a team carried ut a first set f experiments in an insect flight area. The researchers used eight high-speed infrared (红外线的) cameras equipped with mtin capture technlgies t track 30 insects frm three mth and tw dragnfly species. They als flew lab-raised insects frm six different insect rders that were t small fr mtin-capture technlgy, including fruit flies and hneybees, t verify that insects acrss species exhibited similar respnses t artificial light. Wrking with c-authr Pabl Allen f the Cuncil n Internatinal Educatinal Exchange in Mnteverde, Csta Rica, the researchers put heavy cameras, lights and tripds in tw field sites t gather behaviral data frm insects in the wild.
The team was able t cnfirm that insects were nt beelining t the light but rather circling it as they tilted (倾斜) in an attempt t turn their backs twards it. This behavir, knwn as a” drsal light respnse”, typically helps insects maintain a steady flight path aligned with the hrizn. Artificial light that arrives frm a pint surce causes them t fly in unpredictable patterns as they try t turn their backs t what they are mistaking fr the sky. Nw research might have finally slved the mystery mentined at the beginning: artificial light cnfuses insects’ ability t turn themselves t the hrizn, cnfusing their sense f what is up and dwn and causing them t fly in circles.
12. Which thery abut “a mth t a flame” is mst widely accepted?
A. They fllw their nature t fly tward light.
B. They are blind t artificial light.
C. They mistake artificial light fr celestial bdies.
D. They are attracted by the warmth f artificial light.
13. What’s the authr’s purpse in using the figures in Paragraph 2?
A. T shw the cmprehensiveness f the study.
B. T intrduce the purpse f the study.
C. T estimate the cst f the research.
D. T stress the challenge the researchers faced.
14. What des the underlined wrd “beelining” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Flying slwly.B. Staying clse.C. Reacting quickly.D. Heading straight.
15. What culd be a suitable title fr the text?
A. What Rle f Light in Insect navigatin Is
B. The Flying Patterns f Insects
C. The Heat-Seeking Behavir f Mths
D. Why Insects Are Attracted t Artificial Light
