      “While mst earlier researches have fcused n the impact f scial media use n kids’ mental health (心理健康), it’s very imprtant t understand hw scial media use during schl hurs specifically changes learning,” says study authr Jasn Nagata f the University f Califrnia, San Francisc.
      T understand that, Nagata and his wrkmates used data frm ne f the largest nging studies n adlescents, called the Adlescent Brain Cgnitive Develpment (ABCD) Study. Scientists have been fllwing thusands f children as they g thrugh adlescence t understand the develpment f their brains.
      They separated the kids int three grups based n their changing habits f scial media use. The biggest grup, with abut 58% f the kids, used little r n scial media ver the next few years. The secnd-largest grup, abut 37% f kids, started ut with lw-level use f scial media, but by the time they turned 13, they were spending abut an hur each day n scial media. The remaining 6% f kids — called the “high increasing scial media grup” — were spending abut three r mre hurs a day by age 13. All the grups were given a range f tests t measure their thinking skills at the start f the study and in early adlescence.
      “What was surprising t me was that even the lw-level scial media users perfrmed 1 t 2 pints lwer n the reading and memry tasks cmpared t the nn-scial media users,” says Nagata. And the high increasing grup perfrmed up t 4 t 5 pints lwer than the nn-scial media users. “S thse wh had the highest scial media use have lwer scres,” says Nagata. “We wuld expect that when they hit age 15, 16, 17, their use will be much higher, which might lead t even larger gaps in cgnitin (认知) and learning in later years,” he adds.
