Grwing up n the Guanzhng Plain, He Jing didn’t start muntaineering until 18. Her first climb, in 2006, was in the Qinling Muntains, and it sparked a passin fr the sprt.
In 2012, feeling sad fr the lss f her grandmther, He attempted her first muntain ver 5,000 meters — Munt Siguniang in Sichuan prvince. Since then, He has been devted t climbing high-altitude peaks. She summited her first 8,000-meter peak, Munt Ch Oyu, in 2016, using just ne bttle f xygen. Realizing she culd handle the extreme altitude (海拔), she decided t attempt future climbs withut xygen, a mve partly mtivated by cst savings. Climbing withut xygen carries significant risks due t the thin atmsphere at high altitudes. T prepare, He trained strictly, running at least five times a week, climbing 200 flights f stairs with a 20-kilgram lad twice weekly, and using an xygen-restricting mask t simulate high-altitude cnditins.
“At altitudes abve 8,000 meters, the human brain experiences extreme lack f xygen, and the bdy becmes sleepy. I kept telling myself nt t fall asleep, as I might never wake up again,” she said. Her first successful summit withut bttled xygen came n Sept. 25, 2017, when she reached the tp f Munt Manaslu in Nepal.

Grass-pwered gas is set t heat thusands f hmes fr the first time in the cming weeks. Energy firm Ectricity is expected t begin supplying gas t 5,300 hmes frm its plant near Reading thrugh the distributin cmpany Suthern Gas Netwrks in April. Research has estimated that the gas can reduce greenhuse gas (GHG) release by nearly 90 percent. It is hped that the plan can be expanded t supply fuel t mre hmes arund the cuntry.
The £11 millin plant uses bacteria t break dwn grasses and herbs, which absrb CO₂ while grwing, in certain cntainers. This prduces bigas which is then upgraded t bimethane (生物甲烷) fr use in the gas netwrk. An rganic fertiliser (肥料), which is intended t help grw mre grass, is als prduced.
Ectricity wner Dale Vince hpes t expand acrss the cuntry, building plants which reduce the use f cnventinal fuels while aviding damage t the envirnment, and bst energy security.
Green gas has previusly been made frm fd waste r “high-energy” crps such as crn, but bth face sustainability issues and prblems with a lack f size. “Our mix f grass and herbs makes carbn neutral (中性的) gas, pulling carbn ut f the atmsphere,” said Mr. Vince. “It’s a cycle f carbn rather than net zer release.”
Asked abut Ectricity’s bimethane prject, a Department fr Energy Security and Net Zer spkesman said: “Initiatives like this shw hw the UK is leading in the develpment f innvatins in green technlgies that can help increase ur energy security, tackle climate change and bring dwn peple’s bills.”
A spkesman fr Suthern Gas Netwrks said: “We’ve partnered with Ectricity t deliver the bimethane t a prject at a site in Farley Hill near Reading.
