The walk frm my hme t my parents’ huse takes abut twenty-five minutes by the mst direct rute: ut f my huse, straight dwn the main rad, then a left turn thrugh a blck t their drstep.
Yet I’ve discvered several lnger ways t get there. One winds alng a rad f ld bungalws befre circling back; anther takes a lng lp arund my wn huse befre rejining the main rad; a third deturs (绕路) ver a small hill lined with luxury cnds.
These unnecessary deturs have shwn me small mysteries. Each time I ntice smething new, I feel a faint trill f discvery. It’s nt verwhelming jy, but a quiet satisfactin, like a birdwatcher sptting a rare bird amng familiar trees. The jy cmes frm the idea that even in my verly familiar neighbrhd, I can still find a little adventure. I can interrupt my bring rutine with smething ut f the rdinary. Nw, when I visit my parents and have an extra ten r fifteen minutes, I can ty with the thught: Where shall I explre tday?
This, I think, is a small act f resistance in efficient, time-cnscius Singapre, where we usually seek the fastest rute, the fewest transfers, and the mst direct path. In such a culture, chsing a slwer, lnger way feels almst cunter-instinctive. Yet there is value in it. Beynd the cliché f “enjying the jurney”, there is smething gained in intentinal inefficiency.
Studies have shwn that writing by hand imprves learning and memry because it engages the brain mre deeply. I wnder if the same happens when ne takes a detur, gets a little lst, and then manages t get back t the right rute by recalling steps and bserving landmarks, all while wndering at the unexpected sights alng the way. Even if it desn’t sharpen memry r analysis, there is always smething t be gained: the jy f taking the lnger cut.

7. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Lnger Cut t AmazementB. Unusual Ride t Discvery

In its annual reprt, VisitEngland states that the ttal value fr dmestic turism in Great Britain fr 2023 std at £81.7 billin (£70.2 billin fr England alne) — cmbined figures which shw the value f vernight trips and turism day visits. All is very reassuring fr bth the turism industry and fr travelers, and it is a sure sign that the UK is mst definitely still a huge draw fr staycatiners and day trippers. Indeed, Traveldge’s 2024 Travel Trends Reprt revealed ne in three peple were planning t hliday in the UK during 2024.
And staycatins are n lnger just abut bking a few nights in a seafrnt bed, a rural self-catering cttage, r splashing ut n a luxurius htel stay fr a weekend. Althugh these remain ppular ptins, travelers seeking a lcal escape are keen t try new accmmdatins. Glamping — r glamrus camping — where yu spend yur nights under canvas (r in a hut, yurt r even a retired railway carriage) — has been steadily rising in ppularity since the 2000s. Camping website currently basts mre than 1,250 listings in its “glamping” categry, satisfying travelers seeking unique experiences.
Campervan (露营车) rental and wnership als remains a ppular ptin fr staycatins. Data suggests sme 32,200 new mtrhmes and caravans were sld in the UK in 2021 (the latest figures available).
The evidence is clear: The staycatin is nw a permanent and dynamic part f the UK’s turism fabric.
8. What percentage f the £178 billin may flw int lcal ecnmies frm staycatin-related businesses?
A. 86.9%.B. 85.9%.C. 75.2%.D. 11.5%.

In the past few years, studies described the many ways AI tls have made dctrs better at their jbs. But a study published in the Lancet suggested that cllabrating with AI may have a hidden cst.
Dctrs at fur endscpy (内窥镜检查) centers in Pland were given access t an AI tl. This technlgy significantly imprved dctrs’ detectin rate f precancerus grwths. Then, unlike in past studies, the researchers measured what happened when the technlgy was taken away. In the three mnths befre the technlgy was intrduced, the dctrs sptted grwths in abut 28 percent f clnscpies (结肠镜检查). Nw, the detectin rate had fallen t abut 22 percent — well belw their baseline.
It is a phenmenn knwn as “deskilling.” “This is a tw-way prcess,” said Dr. Omar Ahmad, a gastrenterlgist at University Cllege Hspital Lndn. “We give AI inputs that affect its utput, but it als seems t affect ur behavir as well.”
This was an bservatinal study, which means it can’t answer whether the technlgy caused the decline in perfrmance. There culd be ther explanatins fr the effect: Fr example, dctrs perfrmed abut duble the number f clnscpies after the AI tl was intrduced cmpared t befrehand, which might have meant they paid less attentin t each scan.
Experts said the fact that there was a deskilling effect was hardly unexpected. This phenmenn is well dcumented in ther fields: Pilts, fr instance, underg special training t brush up n their skills in the age f autpilt.
And while the weakening f skill is bvius t smene lking at data frm thusands f prcedures, Dr. Rbert Wachter said, he dubted that each individual dctr nticed a change in their wn ability.
It’s still nt entirely clear why a dctr’s skills might decline s quickly while using AI. Either way, medical educatin experts and health care leaders are already cnsidering hw t handle the effect. Sme health systems have invested in simulatin training, which may be used t help dctrs practice prcedures withut AI t keep their skills sharp. Sme medical schls have als cnsidered banning AI fr students’ first years f training.
12. What des the study shw in paragraph 2?
A. The necessity f medical AI tls.B. The risk f medical AI tls.
C. The negative effect f medical AI tls.D. The develpment f medical AI tls.
13. Which f the fllwing may cause the decline in detectin rate?
A. The AI tl becmes less accurate.B. Dctrs lse interest in their wrk.
C. Patients’ cnditins get mre cmplex.D. The number f clnscpies increases.
14. What can be dne t handle the “deskilling”?
A. Enhancing prcedure training withut AI.B. Warning dctrs against verusing AI.
C. Letting patients chse whether t use AI.D. Increasing investment in health systems.
15. What can we learn frm the text?
A. AI causes the decline in dctrs’ cnfidence.
B. AI uses what we give it t help us behave better.
C. The deskilling is unexpected but well dcumented.
D. An individual dctr may nt spt his ability decline.
