Ahmed Muhammad, an 18-year-ld high schl student frm Califrnia, realized hw difficult it can be fr
sme kids t engage in science. He discvered this when taking care f his yunger cusins. One day, he asked
them whether they wanted t d a science experiment, but their respnse was disappinting.
“Every time I take care f them, we usually play chess, play vide games, r watch TV. But when I tried t get
them t d science experiments, they said, ‘N, I hate science. I’m nt gd at it,’” Muhammad recalled. This
mment inspired him t create a nn-prfit rganizatin called “Kits Cubed”, which was intended t expse kids t
science in a fun, affrdable and accessible way.
“I went back t my rm, pulled ut sme science bks, and started researching nline. I came up with a few
science experiments that culd be dne at hme using everyday, inexpensive materials, and the kids lved them,”
Muhammad said.
Seeing hw happy his cusins were, he realized that ther kids culd benefit frm the same experience. “I
nticed that schls ften lacked science experiments, and I thught kids needed access t science kits,”
Muhammad explained.
He then tk $200 he had saved up t create a website and started prducing science kits fr sale, with the
prfit dnated t children in need. “I had enugh mney t build the website and make abut 10–15 kits. Initially,
my bjective was just t see my cusins happy. I wanted t share that jy with mre kids,” Muhammad said.
Tday, Muhammad has been accepted int Stanfrd University, and he is prud t have changed his cusins’
view n science while inspiring ther kids.

As smene wh studies cmmunicatin, I’d nticed hw sme speakers seemed instantly clearer when they
gestured. This made me wnder: D gestures actually make cmmunicatrs mre effective? The shrt answer is
yes, but nly when the gestures visually represent the idea yu’re talking abut. Researchers call these mvements
“illustratrs”. When talking abut distance, yu might spread yur hands apart while saying smething is“farther
away”. When explaining hw tw cncepts relate, yu might bring yur hands tgether while saying“these ideas fit
tgether”. When describing hw the market demand “is ging up and dwn”, yu culd visually shw a wave
shape with yur hands.
T study gestures at scale, my team and I analyzed 200,000 vide segments (片段) frm mre than 2,000 TED
talks using AI tls that can detect and classify hand gestures frame by frame. We paired this with cntrlled
experiments in which ur study participants evaluated entrepreneurs (创业者) presenting a prduct.
The same pattern f results appeared in bth settings. In the AI-analyzed TED Talk data, illustrative gestures
predicted higher audience evaluatins, reflected in mre than 33 millin nline“likes” f the vides. And in ur
experiments, 1,600 participants rated speakers wh used illustrative gestures as mre clear, cmpetent and
persuasive.
What I fund is that these gestures give listeners a visual shrtcut t yur meaning. They make abstract ideas
feel mre cncrete, helping listeners build a mental picture f what yu’re saying. This makes the message feel
easier t prcess — a phenmenn psychlgists call “prcessing fluency”. And we fund that when ideas feel
easier t grasp, peple tend t see the speaker as mre cmpetent and persuasive.
But nt all gestures help. Mvements that dn’t match the message — like randm waving, fidgeting (坐立
不安) r pinting t things in the space — ffer n such benefit. In sme cases, they can even distract. A practical
takeaway: Fcus n clarity ver planned gestures. Think abut where yur hands naturally illustrate what yu’re
saying — emphasizing size, directin r emtin — and let them mve with purpse.
8. Why are the examples mentined in paragraph 1?
A. T cmpare different types f gestures.
B. T shw hw gestures reflect spken ideas.
第 5页/共 12页
C. T explain why gestures attract attentin.
D. T list cmmn mistakes in public speaking.
9. Hw did the researchers cnduct the study?
A. By reviewing talks and testing audiences.
B. By judging the verall quality f talks.
C. By cllecting nline likes fr sme talks.
D. By attending many live TED talks.
10. What can be inferred abut listeners when speakers use illustrative gestures?
A. They give pririty t visual meaning.
B. They ntice mre gestures than cntent.
C. They judge the speaker mre favrably.
D. They shw less interest in abstract ideas.
11. What is the authr’s suggestin t speakers?
A. Designing sme gestures in advance.
B. Keeping gestures purpseful and relevant.
C. Reducing gestures t avid distractin.
D. Fcusing n the frequency f gestures.

In recent years, a new type f relatinship has becme increasingly cmmn amng teenagers: parascial (拟
社会的) relatinships. But what exactly are they? A parascial relatinship is a ne-sided emtinal cnnectin
where a persn feels clse t smene they have never met in real life, such as a scial media influencer, a celebrity,
r even an AI chatbt. Unlike real friendships, these relatinships are nt mutual — the ther persn has n idea
the relatinship exists.
A study published in the Jurnal f Yuth and adlescence surveyed 2,000 teenagers aged 15 t 18. It fund
that 65% f them reprted having at least ne parascial relatinship. Amng these, 30% said they spent ver three
hurs daily fllwing their “idl” nline, and 20% admitted feeling emtinally dependent n these figures. Fr
example, sme teens said they wuld feel sad if their favrite influencer didn’t pst updates, r wuld seek cmfrt
frm AI chatbts when feeling lnely.
There are bth psitive and negative sides t these relatinships. On the ne hand, parascial relatinships can
prvide emtinal supprt. Fr teenagers wh struggle with scial anxiety r feel islated, fllwing smene they
第 6页/共 12页
admire can help them feel less alne. Sme influencers als act as rle mdels, encuraging teens t pursue their
dreams r adpt healthy habits. On the ther hand, excessive engagement in parascial relatinships may harm
real-life scial skills. Teens wh spend t much time nline may have less practice interacting with peple
face-t-face, leading t difficulties in building and maintaining real friendships. Additinally, sme teens may
develp unrealistic expectatins f relatinships, as parascial bnds ften lack the cmplexity and cnflicts f real
human cnnectins.
Experts suggest that parents and teachers shuld guide teenagers t balance nline and ffline interactins. It’s
imprtant fr teens t recgnize that parascial relatinships are a frm f entertainment r emtinal escape, nt a
replacement fr real friendships. By encuraging pen cmmunicatin and supprting teens in building real-life
scial netwrks, adults can help them develp healthy relatinships.
12. What is a parascial relatinship accrding t the passage?
A. A clse bnd between tw teenagers wh met nline.
B. A real-life friendship with a celebrity.
C. An emtinal cnnectin with an AI chatbt wh is unaware f it.
D. A mutual relatinship with a scial media influencer.
13. What des the study in Jurnal f Yuth and adlescence shw?
A. Mst teenagers have n parascial relatinships.
B. Parascial relatinships are harmful t all teenagers.
C. 20% f teens spend ver three hurs nline daily.
D. Many teens rely n media figures fr emtinal supprt.
14. What des the underlined wrd “islated” in the third paragraph mean?
A. devted B. separated C. annyed D. mtivated
15. What d experts advise parents and teachers t d?
A. Help teens balance their digital and in-persn scial lives.
B. Encurage teens t replace real friends with nline idls.
C. Discurage teens frm having any parascial relatinships.
D. Ban teenagers frm using scial media.

Ice Lake Park was quiet and beautiful. As we walked deeper int the park, the number f visitrs slwly

hung my camera bag n a branch nearby, thinking it wuld keep it ut f the way while we tk phts. The frzen

Jack mved arund, trying t find the best psitin, while I fcused n adjusting my camera. He suggested
