Filigree inlay was mainly used in jewelry making in ancient China. Filigree invlves using gld r silver threads t create delicate designs, while the inlay wrk decrates metal pieces with carved patterns and embedded jade r gemstnes.
Gu majred in histry in cllege. After graduatin, he studied cultural relic restratin at the Palace Museum fr half a year, where he was deeply impressed by a phenix crwn (凤冠) decrated with filigree inlay. Then he decided t devte himself t learning the art and passing it dwn t yunger generatins, believing that nly yunger generatins can inject vitality t it.
Hwever, mastering the craft prved far frm easy. T make a piece, Gu must stretch metal threads 5 millimeters in diameter int thin filaments — sme as fine as 0.16 millimeters. Yet he never gave up, ften spending hurs stretching, twisting and weaving threads thinner than a human hair int cmplex patterns.
After becming skilled in the craft, Gu fcused n blending traditinal techniques with mdern life. He designed fashinable jewelry, like hairpins, earrings and brches t appeal t yung peple. Meanwhile, he began t explre new ways f prmtin. Luckily, the emergence f new media cntributes greatly t carrying frward this traditinal technique. Because f these effrts, his wrks have gained wide attentin bth in China and abrad. While freigners admire their unique Chinese charm, verseas Chinese see them as a reminder f hme. In February 2018, train passengers travelling between Almere and Amsterdam were hrrified t see thusands f dead animals, lying scattered (散落) acrss the Ostvaardersplassen. The reserve, nce celebrated as a pineering rewilding prject fr the principle f n human interventin, immediately set ff a heated debate: Was it animal cruelty r just nature taking its curse?
The prject riginated in 1968 after a Dutch inland sea was drained (抽干) t build tw new cities Lelystad and Almere. Its wetland area, nce a paradise (天堂) fr marsh birds, sn became a fertile breeding grund fr different birds. Inspired by Dutch bilgist Frans Vera, it was designated as a nature reserve in 1983, where wildlife thrived withut human invlvement. Vera’s apprach wrked: The grazer (食草动物) and bird ppulatins bmed quickly. Hwever, a crisis was n the hrizn.
The reserve, fenced within an area f 30 square miles, was islated frm wildlife crridrs and surrunding landscapes, blcking the animals frm accessing external shelter and fd surces. With n predatrs cntrlling the grazer ppulatin, their numbers grew unchecked, cnsuming almst all the vegetatin and leaving nthing but the bare land. Fd shrtage wrsened in winter, leading t the extinctin f 22 bird species. When the park managers attempted t sht the utnumbered grazers like wild hrses t balance the ecsystem, they faced strng bjectin frm the public, cnsidering it as cld and immral. The wildlife in the reserve thus fell victim t severe undernutritin in the hard winter.
The eclgical disaster sparked widespread debates abut the nature restratin mvement sweeping acrss the wrld in recent decades, prmting a shift in the reserve management. Peple nw actively intervene; planting trees, feeding the animals if needed, intrducing predatrs like wlves and capping the grazers t keep their numbers in check.
While sme still advcate nn-interventin, the cntrversy has evlved int a brader reflectin n whether t priritize raw natural prcesses r t balance eclgical health with ethical and scial expectatins. Anyway, mre peple nw think abut nature as a dynamic system rather than as a stable landscape — a lasting legacy f the eclgical trial.

B. The wetland became an ideal habitat fr wildlife.
C. Grazers and birds cexisted with lcal residents.
D. The gvernment wanted t stp urban expansin.
9. Which is a majr cause f the 2018 eclgical crisis in the Ostvaardersplassen?
A. The fencing-ff f the reserve. B. The utnumbered predatrs.

10. What des the underlined wrd “capping” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Putting a cver ver. B. Casting shadw n.
C. Relcating t a new place. D. Setting an upper limit n.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?

D. Ethics vs. Wilderness: Ostvaardersplassen n Trial

Yu have reasns fr yur beliefs. Yu can reflect n thse reasns: “Why d I think there’s a serial killer upstairs? It’s because the flr creaked (嘎吱).” Yu can als adjust yur beliefs with mre evidence piled up: “Having cmbed the rm, I must cnclude that it’s just an ld, creaky huse.”
This skill is knwn as belief revisin, a prcess f reflecting and adjusting ur wn thughts and a lng-standing mark f human reasning that distinguishes us frm ther animals. But a new study in the jurnal Science shws that animals like chimps (黑猩猩) als reasn in surprisingly cmplicated ways. Experiments revlved arund fd hidden in ne f several bxes: The chimps wuld pick the bx they thught was mst prmising based n an initial clue. Then they’d get anther clue that cnflicted with the first. Given the chance t rethink, they almst always chse the bx predicted by a sund-reasning rule.
Mst impressively, the animals even accunted fr clues that weakened earlier evidence. When hearing smething buncing arund inside bx, they wuld assume that it was an apple, but then the experimenter wuld pull ut a stne. Realizing they had been misled, the chimps wuld immediately pt fr bx 2, even thugh it appeared negligible a mment befre. “This was the cherry n tp,” says study c-authr Jan Engelmann, a psychlgist at the University f Califrnia. “Nne f us thught they culd d it as it’s just s cmplex and it’s hard t explain their behavir withut appealing t the ntin f reflectin.”
The study reminds us that reflective skills evlved frm thse abilities already present in the cmmn ancestr we share with chimpanzees. Mre than 150 years ag, Charles Darwin predicted that ur extrardinary mental pwers wuld turn ut t be fund thrughut the animal kingdm. If chimpanzees are truly capable f reflectin, the gap between us and ur primate cusins narrws a bit further, as they cnsider the wrld in a way we think f as being ratinal (理性的).
12. Why des the authr begin with the “killer upstairs” tale?
A. T expse fear-fed fantasy. B. T cautin risks in ld huses.
C. T shw belief-revisin skill. D. T satisfy curisity abut mysteries.
13 What can chimps d accrding t paragraph 2?
A. Weigh cnflicting clues. B. Memrize hidden bxes.
C. Behave faster than humans. D. Predict the researchers’ next mve.
14. What des Engelmann call the “cherry n tp”?
A. Chimps drp bad clues after the stne reveal. B. Chimps learn t use cmplex tls fr reward.
C. Chimps stick t first pick as the apple appears. D. Chimps chase the ludest nise withut thinking.
15. What des the authr intend t imply by bringing up Darwin?
A. The cntributin f the bilgist. B. The extensin f ratinal thinking.
C. The recgnitin f human capacities. D. The reflectin n the thery f evlutin.
