In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student frm Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a vlunteer fr a 2-day prgramme. During his stay, he fund that the biggest prblem the lcal children faced was repeated pwer cuts, which made it difficult fr them t study. That left a deep impact n Uday.
Uday came back t Delhi and tk immediate actin t apprach the prblem. He sn understd that residents f villages like Bichpuri culdn’t affrd electrical devices. He wanted t find and develp a slutin t rural India’s pwer shrtage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-ld built the slutin — Uday Electric — a bulb that can ffer a pwer backup (备用) f almst 10 hurs in case f a pwer cut.
Explaining hw the bulb wrks, Uday states that the technlgy used is very simple. “When the bulb is cnnected t a pwer surce, energy gets stred in the battery. When the pwer supply is cut ff, the bulb uses the energy stred in the battery t give ut light,” he explains.
At first, he established a bulb with a fur-hur backup. But he wanted t prvide a backup f 8-10 hurs. Thanks t his lve f cmputer science, he develped a way t change the bulb’s brightness, increasing the backup time withut increasing the size f the battery. The bulb nw cmes with settings 1 change the brightness.
Uday sld each bulb at nly 250 rupees (3 dllars) and has s far sld ver 7,000 units in many remte villages.
