She shut her eyes tight fr a secnd, and thughts f her mther’s wrds abut rare wild bees and their hney sparked a tiny reslve-she culdn’t just stand by and d nthing. Summning up her curage, she clutched the pie tins tightly and banged them sharply again, just like her mther did. The lud Bang-clang cut thrugh the buzzing. The raccn frze fr a secnd, its head tilted in cnfusin, but sn went back t licking the hney greedily.
In that split secnd, the animal-scaring scarecrw nearby gave Emma an idea. She sptted the ld jacket n it, dashed ver, and tugged the jacket free quickly. Still grabbing the pie tins, she marched tward the hive, waving the jacket wildly in ne hand and banging the tins ludly with the ther. The strange waving and clanging scared the greedy raccn, which frze fr a secnd befre hissing and scrambling ff the hive int the bushes. The angry bees, fcused n the thief, ignred Emma cmpletely. Just then, her mther returned with a beekeeper’s smker. A thin clud f smke drifted ver, and the buzzing sn sftened t a gentle hum.
