My cat Jean-Philippe is what yu might charitably describe as ‘big-bned’.
I adpted Phil when he was abut six mnths ld.Befre he came t my huse, he had been living with a cuple f ther kittens ut n the street. When I mved int a furth-flr apartment, he became a full-time indr fdie. I usually call him Fat Phil. I lve him, but he is basically a meat laf with fur. I finally realized things were getting ut f cntrl when he utgrew his cat carrier and I was frced t buy ne built fr a medium-sized dg.
T make sure that Phil wuld stick arund fr as lng as pssible, I knew I needed t make sme changes t his diet — whether r nt he was fully n bard with them. Althugh Fat Phil needed t becme Slim Phil, lsing weight t quickly culd be dangerus. I was sent by Phil’s dctr t a website that calculates hw many calries a day a cat needs t cnsume t lse weight at a healthy pace. This is when I learnt that yu apparently need t understand advanced algebra (代数) t cunt cat-fd calries.
Phil eats a cmbinatin f raw, freeze-dried, and canned fd, and he began his diet at 270 calries a day. Have yu ever tried t figure ut the calries in yur cat’s favurite brands f fd? Sme dn’t include the infrmatin n the label. Others give it in tiny print. Or they publish it in terms that require yu t figure ut, say, that if 450 grams f freeze-dried chicken biscuits cntain 125 calries, a kitchen cup weighs abut 700 grams, and 50 biscuits fit in a cup, each biscuit has…wait...
I have t keep reminding myself that this is the very best diet fr cats, accrding t dctrs. And finally! After mre than a year, Phil’s daily intake has been reduced t 250 calries.
But it’s an nging struggle. He’s a hardened fd thief. He starts pushing fr dinner at abut 1p. m., smetimes rising up n his legs and tapping me n the shulder with his frnt paw as I sit at my cmputer. If he had a watch, he’d be pinting at it. Resisting his mst sincere requests takes as much self-cntrl as I can develp, but I persist. And any mnth nw, my by is ging t slim dwn that dg-sized bdy and becme the size f a very large cat.
4.Hw many f the fllwing phrases refer t the same meaning as “big-bned”?
(1) a full-time indr fdie (2) Fat Phil

C.Phil’s dctr fails t give useful suggestins n his diet.
D.The calrie infrmatin n cat fd is unclear r hard t find.
6.What des the writer imply by “an nging struggle” in the last paragraph?
A.Keeping Phil n his diet remains difficult.
B.The writer intends t stp the cat’s diet plan.
C.Phil’s health keeps wrsening ver the year
D.Feeding Phil has becme much bring nw.
7.Which f the fllwing best describes the authr’s attitude twards Jean-Philippe?
A.Tlerant, the cat will remain huge.
B.Generus, yet lsing patience with Phil’s habits.
C.Lving, yet determined t fllw the health plan.
D.Scientific, relying n cmplex calculatins.

Imagine yu’re writing a pem, rhymes must be paired up befre yu start a new line. It turns ut that AI des smething similar! When Claude, a large language mdel (LLM), is given the first line “he saw a carrt and had t grab it”, it begins thinking abut wrds like “rabbit” almst immediately, writing the next sentence t end at the apprpriate rhyme.
Such frethught is unexpected. Scientists at Anthrpic, the lab that develped Claude, built a tl and they discvered sme unexpected cmplexity.
The tl, a “digital micrscpe”, lets scientists lk at which parts f the AI’s neural (神经的) netwrk light up when it’s wrking n different tasks. If a particular area f the LLM lights up whenever it prduces wrds like rabbit, then that gets marked as being related t rabbits.
This has let the team slve sme pen questins in AI research, fr example, whether a multilingual (多语言的) chatbt has awareness f cncepts beynd language. When Claude is asked fr the ppsite f “big” in English, r the same cncept in Chinese, the same feature lights up in every case, befre mre language-specific circuits kick in t “translate” the cncept f smallness int a particular wrd. This suggests that AI might have a deeper understanding f the wrld than we thught.
Other insights, thugh, are less encuraging. When Claude itself is asked t reasn, printing ut its chain f thught t answer maths questins, the micrscpe suggests that the way the mdel says it reached a cnclusin, and what it actually thught, might nt always be the same. Wrse still, ask a leading questin — suggesting that the answer “might be 4”, and it will specifically add numbers that ultimately lead it t agree with the questin, even if the suggestin is wrng.
But being able t gain insight int the mind f an LLM prvides clues as t hw t stp it ding the same in the future. The gal, after all, is nt t have t d brain surgery, but t knw what it’s thinking.
8.What des the writer intend t shw thrugh the example in paragraph 1?
A.AI can write texts as prgrammed.B.AI can plan sentences in advance.
C.AI can deal with cmplex tasks.D.AI can simplify rhyming lines.
9.Hw des “digital micrscpe” functin in the research?
A.By tracking AI’s thinking activities.B.By wrking n different jbs.
C.By activating AI’s “brain” ptential.D.By matching language patterns.
10.What can be inferred frm paragraph 5 abut Claude?
A.It may make stuff up.B.It may skip chains f thught.
C.It may leave clues ut.D.It may give lgical reasning.
11.Which f the fllwing titles best suits this text?
A.Why AI Still Gets It WrngB.Chatbts’ Language Magic
C.Lking Inside AI’s MindD.The Rise f AI Chatbts

Taking antixidant supplements such as vitamins C and E might make lung cancers grw bigger and spread by stimulating the frmatin f bld vessels within tumurs (肿瘤), accrding t a study in mice.
One researcher invlved has said that peple with the cnditin shuldn’t try t avid these antixidants in their diet, but getting mre than they need via supplements culd cause harm. Martin Bergö at the Karlinska Institute in Sweden and his clleagues previusly fund that supplementing with the antixidants vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine caused lung cancers t spread in mice.
T better understand hw this might ccur, Bergö and a different team f researchers studied mice with a specific frm f lung cancer and mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells. They supplemented the mice’s water with vitamin C, which the animals naturally yield, and vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine, which they get frm their diet.
The researchers gave the mice increasing amunts f these antixidants, which made the levels f these antixidants in the mice higher than what was necessary. “Tday in sciety, a lt f peple eat healthily. They have sme supplements, and then they als cnsume ther antixidant-rich fds like ginger shts and smthies,” says Bergö, “If yu d all that, yu culd end up with the levels f dses — t much — that we’ re talking abut.”
The researchers fund that the higher the antixidant dses, the greater the rate f bld vessel frmatin in the tumurs. This was true fr mice with the specific lung cancer and thse with implanted human cancer cells. Increased bld vessel grwth wuld prbably lead t tumurs grwing and spreading, says Bergö, but they didn’t study this.
Bergö has stressed that peple with any frm f cancer shuldn’t change their diet n the basis f this research. “If yu tk away all the antixidants in fd, yu wuld get sick fr a range f reasns, such as vitamin deficiencies, and this wuld influence the cancer,” he says, “We’re fcusing n increased dses abve the required levels.”
12.What is the effect f antixidant supplements n lung cancer?
A.They help t reduce the risk f lung cancer.
B.They have little significant impact n lung cancer.
C.They prevent the frmatin f bld vessels in tumrs.
D.They may cause the grwth and spread f lung cancer.
13.What des the underlined wrd “yield” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Digest.B.Cmpse.C.Cnstruct.D.Prduce.
14.Hw did the researchers study antixidants n mice with lung cancer?
A.By implanting human cells nly.B.By varying the antixidant dses.
C.By cmparing specific antixidants.D.By keeping antixidant dses fixed.
15.What des Bergö emphasize abut the antixidants in cancer patients’ diets?
A.Antixidants shuld be cmpletely avided.
B.High dses f antixidants can directly cause cancer.
C.Antixidants are necessary but their dses shuld be cntrlled.
D.The study’s results shuld be used in adjusting the patients’ diets.

___20___ That can be an admissins fficer wanting t be mre thughtful in extending the benefits that her schl ffers. Or it can be a zer-waste blgger asking us all t think differently abut hw we cntribute t greater balance in the wrld.
The nly cnstant is the universal need fr prgress, and that will never leave us where it fund us.
A.It starts with cnsenting (同意) t change thught.
B.Undubtedly there have been missteps alng the way.
C.In shrt, they left a lt f amazing peple ut and didn’t even knw it.
D.But at its heart, it reveals smething mre fundamental: hw we judge individual value.

At the start f this term, ur schl annunced a “Spring Music Shwcase.” Emma, wh lved playing the drums, immediately signed up. She practiced every day after class in the music rm, her rhythm sharp and full f energy.
Lucy, n the ther hand, was quiet and serius. She played the vilin beautifully but rarely spke in frnt f thers. When their music teacher suggested that they wrk tgether as a pair and said, “Drums and vilin culd be smething special,” Emma agreed at nce. Lucy hesitated but finally ndded.
Their first rehearsal was a disaster. Emma wanted fast beats and lud fills (鼓点) ; Lucy preferred slw meldies and sft ntes. “Yu’re drwning ut my vilin!” Lucy said, frustratin creeping int her vice. “And yu’re playing like yu’re afraid t be heard!” Emma sht back. They left the rm withut saying gdbye.
Fr tw days, they avided each ther in the hallway. But then, during lunch, Emma saw Lucy sitting alne, sftly humming a tune while tapping her fingers n the table. She was trying t match a drum rhythm. Emma remembered hw Lucy had stayed late last week t help a yunger student with her vilin. Maybe Lucy wasn’t being difficult — maybe she was just nervus.
Later that day, Emma passed the ntice bard and saw their names still listed fr the shwcase. The perfrmance was in ten days. She felt a pang f guilt. Music wasn’t just abut being lud r fast but als abut listening, t. That evening, she sat at her desk, sketching ut a new arrangement that blended Lucy’s gentle meldy with sfter, steady drumbeats. She even left space fr silence because smetimes, silence spke luder than sund.

根据第二段中“I usually call him Fat Phil. I lve him, but he is basically a meat laf with fur. 以及第三段中“I was frced t buy ne built fr a medium-sized dg. 可知,(2) Fat Phil (胖Phil)、(3) a meat laf with fur (带毛的肉球,说明猫很胖)、(4)a medium-sized dg (中型犬,说明猫体型大),这三个短语和“big-bned”意思相同,均指“体型大、偏胖”。故选B。
根据第四段中“Have yu ever tried t figure ut the calries in yur cat’s favurite brands f fd? Sme dn’t include the infrmatin n the label. Others give it in tiny print. Or they publish it in terms that require yu t figure ut, say, that if 450 grams f freeze-dried chicken biscuits cntain 125 calries, a kitchen cup weighs abut 700 grams, and 50 biscuits fit in a cup, each biscuit has…wait...
根据最后一段“He’s a hardened fd thief. 故选A。
I lve him, but he is basically a meat laf with fur. 、最后一段中“Resisting his mst sincere requests takes as much self-cntrl as I can develp, but I persist.

根据第一段中的“Imagine yu’re writing a pem, rhymes must be paired up befre yu start a new line. It turns ut that AI des smething similar! When Claude, a large language mdel (LLM), is given the first line “he saw a carrt and had t grab it”, it begins thinking abut wrds like “rabbit” almst immediately, writing the next sentence t end at the apprpriate rhyme.(想象一下你正在写诗,在开始新的一行之前,必须先搭配好押韵词。
根据第三段中的“The tl, a “digital micrscpe”, lets scientists lk at which parts f the AI’s neural (神经的) netwrk light up when it’s wrking n different tasks. If a particular area f the LLM lights up whenever it prduces wrds like rabbit, then that gets marked as being related t rabbits.(这个被称为“数字显微镜”的工具,能让科学家观察到人工智能在处理不同任务时,其神经网络的哪些部分会被激活。 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“When Claude itself is asked t reasn, printing ut its chain f thught t answer maths questins, the micrscpe suggests that the way the mdel says it reached a cnclusin, and what it actually thught, might nt always be the same. Wrse still, ask a leading questin — suggesting that the answer “might be 4”, and it will specifically add numbers that ultimately lead it t agree with the questin, even if the suggestin is wrng.(当要求克劳德(Claude)进行推理,输出其思考过程来解答数学问题时,“数字显微镜”显示,该模型声称得出结论的方式与其实际思考过程可能并不总是一致的。 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第三段中的“The tl, a “digital micrscpe”, lets scientists lk at which parts f the AI’s neural (神经的) netwrk light up when it’s wrking n different tasks.(这个被称为“数字显微镜”的工具,能让科学家观察到人工智能在处理不同任务时,其神经网络的哪些部分会被激活。)”以及最后一段中的“But being able t gain insight int the mind f an LLM prvides clues as t hw t stp it ding the same in the future.(但能够深入了解大型语言模型(LLM)的“思维”,为未来找到阻止它出现类似问题的方法提供了线索。)”

根据第一段“Taking antixidant supplements such as vitamins C and E might make lung cancers grw bigger and spread by stimulating the frmatin f bld vessels within tumurs (肿瘤), accrding t a study in mice.(一项小鼠研究显示,服用维生素C和E等抗氧化剂补充剂可能会通过刺激肿瘤内血管的形成,使肺癌生长得更大并发生扩散)”可知,抗氧化剂补充剂可能会导致肺癌的生长和扩散。故选D项。
划线词所在句中“vitamin C, which the animals naturally yield (生素C,动物自然yield)”和“vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine, which they get frm their diet (维生素E和N-乙酰半胱氨酸,从饮食中获取)”是对比关系,说明维生素E和N-乙酰半胱氨酸是从饮食中获取,而生素C是动物自然产生。
根据第四段中“The researchers gave the mice increasing amunts f these antixidants, which made the levels f these antixidants in the mice higher than what was necessary.(研究人员给老鼠增加了这些抗氧化剂的用量,这使得老鼠体内这些抗氧化剂的水平高于必要水平)”可知,研究人员是通过改变抗氧化剂的剂量来研究抗氧化剂对肺癌小鼠的影响的。故选B项。
根据最后一段“Bergö has stressed that peple with any frm f cancer shuldn’t change their diet n the basis f this research. ‘If yu tk away all the antixidants in fd, yu wuld get sick fr a range f reasns, such as vitamin deficiencies, and this wuld influence the cancer,’ he says, ‘We’re fcusing n increased dses abve the required levels.’(Bergö强调,任何形式的癌症患者都不应该根据这项研究改变他们的饮食。

16.上文“But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways peple are getting arund using plastic r reusing clthes r cntrlling the desire t accrue things we dn’t really need, I realized that, zer-waste starts with smething else.(但当我妻子和我分享人们想出的各种方法来避免使用塑料、重复使用衣服或控制购买我们并不真正需要的东西的欲望时,我意识到,零浪费始于其他的东西。)” 下文“And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing t d smething differently, can be the hardest step f all.(在很多方面,第一步,也就是愿意以不同的方式做事,可能是最难的一步。)” 故选A。
17.上文“Ostensibly, it’s abut mre and mre clleges agreeing t drp standardized tests as a required measure f student aptitude.(表面上,这是关于越来越多的大学同意放弃将标准化考试作为学生能力的必要衡量标准。)”
18.上文“While they identified ne kind f student well, they did nt accunt fr a wide range f experiences, skills, and qualities that were n less imprtant t achievement and success.(虽然他们很好地识别出了一种类型的学生,但他们并没有考虑到一系列对成就和成功同样重要的经验、技能和品质。)”
19.上文“They have reslved t d the best they can t see the whle individual.(他们决心尽自己所能看到学生的全貌。)” 下文“Sme think drpping mandatry standardized tests is a mistake.(有些人认为取消强制性标准化考试是个错误。)”
20.下文“That can be an admissins fficer wanting t be mre thughtful in extending the benefits that her schl ffers. Or it can be a zer-waste blgger asking us all t think differently abut hw we cntribute t greater balance in the wrld.(这可能是一位招生官想要更有思考地扩展她所在学校提供的福利。

A. stable稳定的;B. fixed固定的;C. fast快速的;D. excited兴奋的。根据上文“his missing back leg”和下文“but it didn’t. A tripd (三脚架) can be strnger than a chair.” 故选A。
A. chased追逐;B. drve驾驶;C. dragged拖拽;D. escaped逃跑。

根据上文“Wrigley and I bth liked rcks, trees, and paying attentin t the wrld’s small details”可知,石头、树木、世界上的其他小细节,这些都是靠感官体验到的,所以这里指感官世界。

由it was可知,句子是强调句,结构是“It is/was+被强调的部分+wh/that+其他部分”,此处被强调的是13-year-ld Yu Zidi frm Hebei,是人,因此空格处是wh/that。故填wh/that。
