I ften take walks in the middle f my writing day. One afternn, I returned hme, lked at my frnt dr,
and felt hw nrmal and safe it seemed. Then a questin ccurred t me: What if I came back and fund the dr
wide pen? That simple idea became the seed fr my nvel Gne Girl.
Arund that time, I watched many true-crime shws, in which the husband was ften the “bad guy”. But in my
stry, the husband wuld nt be cmpletely inncent, nr cmpletely evil.
N stry cmes t a writer in full frm. Gne Girl changed hugely when I was writing it. At first, I wrte nly
frm Nick’s pint f view. Amy’s vice was missing. T understand her, I wrte shrt exercises. One f them later
became the nw-famus “cl girl” passage. I als imagined many pssible endings — shuld Amy be recgnized
by strangers, r even be killed? In the end, I felt Nick and Amy were lcked in a special, trubling bnd. They
harmed each ther, yet depended n each ther.
My years as a jurnalist helped me accept that a first draft is always rugh. The writing prcess was n
mystery t me; I knew n sudden inspiratin wuld cme t fix it. I had t slve the prblems myself. Many peple
give up because their first draft feels terrible. But all first drafts are like that.
While writing Gne Girl, I had many dubts. The stry had n clear her, and the biggest surprise came in the
middle, nt the end. I liked the idea, and luckily my editrs did t, but nne f us knew whether readers wuld
enjy it. T ur relief, bksellers supprted it early n. The nvel entered the bestseller list at number tw and
      sn reached number ne.
I d nt expect t repeat my success. I’m ging t write ther great bks, but there’s never ging t be
anther Gne Girl. That was just pure lightning in a bttle and I was lucky t be there fr it.
      第 5页/共 13页

Everyne has a natural bdy smell, and mst f the time it is cmpletely nrmal. While many peple try t
hide their natural smell with dedrant (除臭剂) r perfume, yu usually d nt smell bad unless yu are sweating
heavily. Still, if yu suddenly ntice an unpleasant smell, it may be related t the fd yu eat.
T begin with, sme vegetables can influence the way yur bdy smells. Fr example, nins, garlic, leeks,
and scallins are full f flavr but als rich in sulfur (硫). As the bdy digests them, sulfur cmpunds enter the
bld and mve thrugh the pres, the breath, and even urine (尿液), which can create a strng smell. Still, these
vegetables are very nutritius, s brushing yur teeth and using dedrant afterward is ften enugh.
Certain vegetables may change the smell f yur urine. Asparagus is a gd example. When the bdy breaks
dwn a sulfur cmpund in it, the urine f sme peple develps a special smell. This des nt happen t everyne
      and is cmpletely harmless.
Cruciferus vegetables — such as brccli, cauliflwer, and Brussels spruts — can als cntribute. Eating
large amunts f them may lead t bdy dr r gas. Hwever, cking them and increasing yur intake slwly can
      help reduce these effects.
      第 6页/共 13页
Spices can als play a part. Strng spices like cumin, cayenne, and hrseradish raise yur bdy temperature
and make yu sweat mre. As a result, yur bdy smell may becme strnger. Using dedrant and washing after
sweating are simple ways t manage this.
Besides these fds, red meat has been linked t a less pleasant bdy smell, althugh the exact reasn remains
unclear. Alchl can have a similar effect, as it is partly released thrugh the breath, pres, and urine during
      digestin.
If yu want t reduce bdy smell naturally, washing with antibacterial sap, keeping yur underarm skin clean,
and chsing a suitable dedrant can make a big difference. If the smell seems unusual r lasts t lng, it is best
t seek advice frm a dctr.
      28. Which fds affect bdy smell thrugh sulfur cmpunds?
      A. Onins and garlic. B. Cumin and cayenne.
      C. Brccli and cauliflwer. D. Asparagus and hrseradish.
      29. What is suggested t reduce the effects f eating cruciferus vegetables?
      A. Stp eating them fr a while. B. Drink mre water after eating.
      C. Eat them raw in small amunts. D. Ck them and gradually eat mre.
      30. Why might red meat affect bdy smell?
      A. It raises bdy temperature fast.
      B. It cntains strng-smelling spices.
      C. Scientists aren’t sure f the cause.
      D. It increases sweat prductin greatly.
      31. What is the best title fr this text?
      A. Hw t Hide Natural Bdy Smell
      B. Fds That Influence Bdy Smell
      C. Natural Changes in Human Bdy Smell
      D. Everyday Tips fr Managing Bdy Smell
