Once, he said nthing special happened at schl, but then we received a pht shwing him psing with a huge barn wl (仓鸮) n his shulder! S, when he started talking abut “Break the Rules Day” that day, I knew it must be exciting.
A letter frm schl explained all abut “Break the Rules Day.” There were 11 rules students culd break. Fr example, they culd “Eat any snack they want” r “Pick any seat they like.” Each rule cst 50p. My sn ticked almst all the bxes, except “Call adults by their first names.” He said his teacher wuldn’t like that, even thugh it’s part f the fun. “The best part” was at the end f the letter: fr £1, he culd thrw a spnge at the head teacher. He didn’t think twice befre ticking that bx!
Nw I understand why he has been s eager t d chres. He even asks fr mre jbs t earn extra mney. We’ve asked him t clean his bedrm, srt ut bks, fld his pajamas, and get his unifrm ready fr washing. When we tld him t put the unifrm in the laundry bin, he cheerfully asked, “What’s that?” It made me realize he might nt have dne much tidying befre. On 25 June, 2024, Li Chunlai watched eagerly as a capsule carrying the first pieces f the far side f the Mn landed n Earth. “Samples, I finally gt yu,” he thught. The lander spent tw days digging and cllecting material n the lunar surface befre sending the samples back t Earth.
After arriving n Earth, the capsule was in Li’s lab at the Natinal Astrnmical Observatries in Beijing. It tk Li and his team several days t get ut the precius material frm its sealed vault (密封舱), using varius tls. T prtect the material, they stred it in a nitrgen-filled (充满氮气的) bx. The pwder within was “fluffy” (松软的) and “very fresh”, says Li. The samples are lighter in clur than thse frm the Mn’s near side. “It’s very special,” says Li.
The rcks and dust were cllected frm the deepest part f the Suth Ple-Aitken Basin, which is thught t be the largest and ldest impact crater (撞击坑) n the Mn. The site was chsen because f the variety f the material it might cntain. The samples are “like a recrder f all these histrical events”, says Yi Xu, a planetary scientist at Macau University f Science and Technlgy. Studying them will help t uncver “lts f secrets f the Mn”, says Yuqi Qian, a planetary gelgist at the University f Hng Kng.
Tp amng them is why the lunar far side lks s different frm the near side— the crust (月壳) is thicker and nt as enriched with radiactive elements (放射性元素). “Understanding the Mn’s histry is key t learning abut the pasts f ther planets such as Mars, Venus and Mercury,” says James Head, a planetary gescientist at Brwn University in Prvidence, Rhde Island, wh has cllabrated extensively with Li. “The Mn is a keystne t planetary evlutin (演化) in general.”
Planetary scientists all ver the wrld nw want t get their glves n the samples. Li’s lab has distributed (分发) sme pieces t teams acrss China. But it will be a few years befre researchers utside the cuntry get access, says Li, t give Chinese researchers pririty. A fld f scientific findings are expected in the cming mnths. Li is already lking ahead t China’s next sample-return missins—t a near-Earth asterid (近地小行星) in 2025, and t Mars several years later. “The insight generated s far frm this year’s Mn missin,” he says, “is just the beginning”.
      27. Why did scientists chse the Suth Ple-Aitken Basin t cllect samples?
      A. Because it is the clsest area t Earth.
      B. Because it has the freshest pwder n the Mn.
      C. Because it is the easiest place t land a spacecraft.
      D. Because it may cntain varius types f materials.
      28. What can we learn frm the passage?
      A. The samples may help scientists understand ther planets’ histry.
      B. The far side f the Mn has a thinner crust than the near side.
      C. The Mn samples will nly be studied by Chinese scientists.
      D. The lander cllected samples fr ver a week n the Mn.

      B. The celebratin f China’s space missin success.
      C. The differences between the Mn’s tw sides.
      D. The tls used t cllect lunar samples.
      D
N ne wants t be seen as a liar. Liars are cnsidered untrustwrthy at best and immral at wrst. And yet, we keep lying t urselves all the time. “I’ll enjy this sleeve f Ores tday because my diet starts tmrrw,” I might tell myself. Or even — irnically — “I am always hnest with myself.”
Few peple are cmpletely hnest with thers. Research frm the University f Massachusetts n undergraduate students fund that 60 percent lied at least nce during a 10-minute cnversatin, and many lied several times. N ne is cmpletely hnest with themselves, because, the truth hurts.
Smetimes, peple engage in (参与) self-deceptin t prtect their eg (自尊) r gather curage. Fr example, if yu are nt gd at public speaking, yu might try t increase yur curage befre a scary presentatin by talking t yurself, “I am a great public speaker!” Hwever, t fake it till yu make it is ne thing; t fake it frever, even t yurself, is entirely different. Such is the case if yur success at wrk r schl is the result f cheating but yu chse t chalk it up t yur wn merit (优秀品质).
All that self-deceptin takes a lt f wrk t maintain (保持). It is cstly nt nly because aviding prblems can make them wrse but als because the prcrastinatr (拖延者) must d the mental wrk f a task ver and ver, withut reaping (获得) the rewards f actually getting it dne. Why write “Change banks” n yur t-d list fr mnths n end instead f ding it nce and being free f the task?
Self-deceptin will never lead yu t the deepest kind f satisfactin. That cntentment can be fund nly within the true versin f yurself. Persnal integrity (正直) is abslutely necessary fr persnal prgress, which psychlgists shw is a central element f happiness. Prgress requires knwing hnestly where yu are cmpared with where yu have been.
If yu ignre yur flaws (缺点), yu can’t crrect them. Research shws that self-deceptin is cnnected with an inability t see ur wn flaws, which makes self-imprvement harder. Refusing t admit that I am a bit neurtic(神经质的) might make me feel better in the mment, but it als discurages me frm undertaking effrts t change fr the lng-term gd f myself and thse arund me.
      30. Why des the authr use the example f Ores in Paragraph 1?
      A. T prve that eating snacks affects peple’s dieting plans.
      B. T shw a cmmn frm f self-deceptin in daily life.
      C. T stress the ppularity f Ores amng dieters.
      D. T explain why lying t thers is harmful.
      31. What des the underlined phrase “chalk it up t” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Add it up t.B. Think f it as.C. Take it away frm.D. Write it dwn as.
      32. Which f the fllwing wuld the writer mst prbably agree with?
      A. Making a t-d-list helps avid lying t yurself.
      B. Never-ending satisfactin results in self-deceptin.
      C. Self-deceptin is a harmless way t prtect their eg.
      D. Admitting ur flaws is imprtant fr self-imprvement.
      33. What is the writer’s purpse in writing this passage?
      A. T encurage peple t stp lying t themselves.
      B. T intrduce a new study abut self-deceptin.
      C. T tell peple t see and crrect their flaws.
      D. T shw the bad effects f self-deceptin.
