When Amanda Rulten picked up a cheap clring bk and sme clred pens, she didn’t expect the activity t stick. It came when she was in the middle f a health crisis. It’s abut taking five minutes away frm everything.” Gradually, clring turned int her daily rutine.
Clring bks fr adults aren’t a new phenmenn. Early “paint bks” were marketed t grwn-ups in the late 18th century, ften framed as educatinal r mral tls. But adult clring really caught n arund 2015, when Jhanna Basfrd’s intricate (错综复杂的) drawings in her bk “Secret Garden” became sensatins. Recently, a “czy clring” aesthetic (美学的) style has dminated adult clring charts — simple line art with large shapes meant fr quick, relaxing fills. Of Amazn’s best-sellers in Octber 2025, nearly half f the tp adult clring bks emphasized the same “Bld & Easy” style — a pull tward accessibility ver intricacy, intended t cmfrt tired minds.
Fr Girija Kaimal, prfessr f the Creative Arts Therapies at Drexel University in Philadelphia, clring’s appeal runs deeper than relaxatin. “I think f us as 21st century hunter-gatherers. Our bdies and minds are tens f thusands f years ld. We wrked with ur hands; we used all ur senses. Clring takes us back there,” she explained. As fr why it feels rewarding, “By the end f it, yu have smething clrful, which signals health t us,” she explained. “In nature, when yu see clr, it usually signifies abundance, a fertile landscape.”
Kaimal said that this kind f activity “let peple play again,” giving them a safe way t create withut fear f failure. And skill desn’t matter. “We are allwed t play as adults, hwever silly,” Kaimal added.
      8. What drve Rulten t buy a clring bk?
      A. The desire t develp a new hbby.
      B. The wish t have fun in the hspital.
      C. The attempt t cure her mental disease.
      D. The need t relax mind during treatment.
      9. Which f the fllwing belngs t the “Bld & Easy” style?
      A. Plain line drawings with brad utlines.
      B. Intricate patterns requiring careful filling.
      C. Accessible pictures with mral messages.
      D. Large detailed shapes fr creative expressin.
      10. What is the main purpse f paragraph 3?
      A. T explain healing mechanisms f clring.
      B. T illustrate the rewarding effects f clring.
      C. T cmpare ancient and mdern ways f relaxatin.
D T build cnnectin between physical health and clring.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. A Relaxing Tl fr Patients.
      B. A Silly but Funny clring Bk.
      C. The Rise f“Bld & Easy” clring.
      D. The Playful Jurney f Mental healing.
D 9. A 10. A 11. D
根据第一段“It came when she was in the middle f a health crisis. Eighteen mnths ag, she had an infectin and was rushed int emergency surgery, fllwed by numerus hspital stays. ‘My mental health has cmpletely cllapsed,’ said Rulten. ‘I can’t d the hbbies I nce enjyed, s having time t sit and be present in smething that isn’t demanding r causing me harm has been really helpful. It’s abut taking five minutes away frm everything.’(这发生在她遭遇健康危机的时候。18个月前,她因感染被紧急送往手术室,之后又多次住院。‘我的心理健康彻底崩溃了,’Rulten说,‘我无法再从事曾经喜欢的爱好,所以能有时间坐下来投入到一件不费力、不会伤害我的事情中,这对我帮助很大。这是一种从所有事情中抽离五分钟的方式。’)”可知,Rulten购买涂色书是为了在治疗期间放松身心。故选D。
      【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Recently, a ‘czy clring’ aesthetic (美学的) style has dminated adult clring charts — simple line art with large shapes meant fr quick, relaxing fills.(最近,一种‘舒适涂色’的美学风格主导了成人涂色书榜单——带有大色块的简单线条画,旨在快速、轻松地填充。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“Fr Girija Kaimal, prfessr f the Creative Arts Therapies at Drexel University in Philadelphia, clring’s appeal runs deeper than relaxatin. ‘I think f us as 21st century hunter-gatherers. Our bdies and minds are tens f thusands f years ld. We wrked with ur hands; we used all ur senses. Clring takes us back there,’ she explained. As fr why it feels rewarding, ‘By the end f it, yu have smething clrful, which signals health t us,’ she explained. ‘In nature, when yu see clr, it usually signifies abundance, a fertile landscape.’(对于费城德雷塞尔大学创意艺术疗法教授Girija Kaimal来说,涂色的吸引力远不止放松。‘我认为我们是21世纪的狩猎采集者。我们的身体和大脑有几万年的历史。我们用双手劳作,调动所有感官。涂色把我们带回了那个时代,’她解释道。至于为什么会感觉有意义,‘完成之后,你会得到一件色彩斑斓的作品,这对我们来说是健康的信号,’她解释道,‘在自然界中,当你看到色彩时,它通常象征着丰饶、一片肥沃的土地。’)”可知,第三段主要解释了涂色活动的疗愈机制。故选A。
根据第四段“Kaimal said that this kind f activity ‘let peple play again,’ giving them a safe way t create withut fear f failure. And skill desn’t matter. ‘We are allwed t play as adults, hwever silly,’ Kaimal added.(Kaimal说,这种活动‘让人们再次玩耍’,为他们提供了一种安全的创作方式,无需担心失败。而且技能并不重要。‘作为成年人,我们被允许玩耍,不管这看起来多么傻气,’Kaimal补充道。)”以及文章中Amanda Rulten通过涂色疗愈心理健康的经历可知,文章核心是涂色作为一种“玩耍”方式,对现代人心理健康的疗愈作用。因此,“The Playful Jurney f Mental healing(心灵疗愈的趣味之旅)”最适合作为文章标题。故选D。
      D
One persn’s trash is anther persn’s… jet fuel? Strange as it might sund, researchers at the University f Illinis utlined a strategy fr taking excess fd waste, changing it int bi-fuel, and then “upgrading” that fuel int jet fuel that can be put t direct use this week in Nature Cmmunicatins.
The US Envirnmental Prtectin Agency estimates that transprtatin accunted fr rughly 29% f all greenhuse gas emissins in America in 2022 alne. Of that, abut 7% came frm cmmercial aircraft. But what abut s-called bimass-based (生物质) SAF? Sme estimates suggest that SAF, largely referring t fuels derived (提取) frm rganic materials, culd reduce emissins frm flying by up t 80%, cmpared t cnventinal jet fuel.
In this new experiment, the team used a chemical prcess called HTL, which essentially cpies the way the Earth naturally creates raw il frm rganic matter ver millins f years, except withut all the waiting. HTL kind f acts like an advanced “pressure cker” t fast-frward nature’s timeline.
With plenty f raw il extracted, the researchers then set ut t transfrm it int jet fuel. The first step invlved remving salt, ash, misture, and ther impurities. After that, they used a cleaning prcess t get rid f ther undesirable elements such as nitrgen, and xygen. What remained were the specific hydrcarbns (烃) required t make jet fuel.
The team tk their fd-waste derived jet fuels and tested it against current fuel standards. It passed the screening test and met industry requirements withut needing t intrduce any special additives, meaning the fuel wuld theretically pwer a cmmercial airplane.
The findings are a first step t shw plane fuel derived frm fd waste is at least pssible. Actually making enugh f it t supply an entire passenger jet, hwever, is anther beast altgether. “Our research helps slve the science and engineering prblems, and then the industry needs t step in,” University f Illinis prfessr and crrespnding authr Yuanhui Zhang said.
      12. What did the researchers at the University f Illinis hpe t achieve?
      A. Develping a new way t handle fd waste.
      B. Changing excess fd waste int usable jet fuel.
      C. Creating jet fuel directly frm untreated fd waste.
      D. Reducing greenhuse gas emissins frm waste treatment.
      13. Why des the authr mentin the EPA’s estimates in Paragraph 2?
      A. T supprt develping lw-emissin jet fuel.
      B. T stress air pllutin frm cmmercial aircraft.
      C. T cmpare emissins f cnventinal jet fuel and SAF.
      D. T prve transprtatin is the tp US greenhuse gas emitter.
      14. What can be inferred abut the HTL prcess?
      A. It remves impurities by heating.
      B. It breaks dwn rganic matter naturally.
