Marit Brmmer is head f the Internatinal Gethermal Assciatin based in Germany. She tld The Assciated Press, “We’re essentially standing n ur wn sun, which we can get clean, reliable energy frm.
In Sutheast Asia, gethermal energy prductin is expected t increase ten times greater frm 2020 t 2050, reaching 276 millin megawatt-hurs, the Internatinal Energy Agency says.
After the U.S., Indnesia and the Philippines are the secnd and third-largest users f gethermal energy in the wrld. Bth cuntries plan t expand their prductin f gethermal energy.
Hwever, develping new gethermal prjects is cstly and smetimes risky fr cmpanies when they test and drill t lk fr reservirs. That makes it hard t get mney fr develpment, said Shigeru Yamamura, an energy specialist at the Asia Develpment Bank.
The Indnesian Ministry f Energy and Mineral Resurces says it is wrking t shrten the wait time t get permits fr new gethermal prjects and als cnsidering ways t increase the amunt f mney cmpanies culd make frm the prjects. The Wrld Bank is prviding a $150 millin lan t increase Indnesian investments in gethermal energy. And the Green Climate Fund and the Clean Technlgy Fund are prviding $127.5 millin.
Still, cmmunity pushback can slw develpment even when there is enugh mney. In Indnesia, villagers have prtested gethermal prjects. They say the prjects are nt safe and can harm the envirnment. Several gethermal prjects in Indnesia have had deadly gas leaks in the past five years. In the Philippines, prtests have led at least ne cmpany t pay mney t Indigenus grups fr the use f their lands.
Brmmer thinks gvernments and businesses shuld wrk with nearby cmmunities. “We need t shw that this develpment benefits all peple, nt just a cmpany,” she said. “It’s nt abut being a gd neighbr; it’s abut being the best neighbr and really wrking with cmmunities t respect their cncerns.”

Reading is vital fr learning, but students nw have access t fewer bks at hme, accrding t PISA data.
The number f bks available in the hmes f 15-year-ld students decreased between 2015 and 2022 n average acrss 59 cuntries and ecnmies with cmparable data, accrding t students’ answers t PISA questinnaires. Despite this decline, bks cntinue t be available in mst students’ hmes. In 2022, sme 30% f students reprted having mre than 100 bks, n average, with a similar prprtin reprted having between 26 and 100 bks.
Dictinaries saw the mst significant decline. In 2015, 92% f students reprted having a dictinary at hme, but by 2022 this drpped t 80%, with the steepest declines in Brazil, the Dminican Republic and Jrdan. N cuntry had an increase in dictinaries at hme, but there was n significant change in Gergia.
