Did yu knw that an average Indian husehld wastes ver 50 litres f water daily? At just 18, Mannat Kaur has fund a way t change that. Mannat’s stry twards sustainability began at hme. Her parents had educated her in fllwing a mre sustainable path twards everyday events. This early expsure t sustainable practices laid the fundatin fr her later effrts. Hwever, Mannat’s passin fr water recycling was sparked by a first-hand experience in 2016. “I saw peple struggling fr tw days during a supply shrtage in Delhi’s canals, searching fr water and carrying their pts,” recalls Mannat.
Determined t find a slutin, 10-year-ld Mannat started researching. She surveyed 400 peple t understand barriers t greywater (洗涤水) recycling. Mannat fund that peple were willing t have a recycling system, but the limitatins and the lack f knwledge stpped them frm ding s. Driven by a desire t bridge this gap, Mannat began a missin.
Her innvatin, a decentralised greywater recycling system, cmprises tw key cmpnents: the Bilge Vessel (BV) and the Scupper Valve (SV). The Scupper Valve, a cmpact device placed in the flr drain, cllects shwer and kitchen greywater, which is then pumped t the Bilge Vessel r filtratin (过滤). The Bilge Vessel is a three-bucket filtratin system that purifies water using natural filter media. “The Bilge Vessel stres the recycled water, which can be used fr nn-drinking peratins and activities that require nn-human cntact like irrigatin, mpping, car washing, etc,” shares Mannat.
The impact f Mannat’s system is evident in her wn hme, where the prttype has been functining fr tw years. Fr a family f fur, the system saves 5,000 t 6,000 litres f ptable water per mnth, effectively recycling 50%f their water demand. Furthermre, her decentralised apprach significantly reduces carbn emissins cmpared t traditinal centralised sewage treatment systems.
Mannat Kaur’s jurney is an inspiring example f hw yuthful innvatin, cupled with a deep understanding f real-wrld prblems, can lead t impactful slutins. Her greywater recycling system addresses water scarcity and prmtes a sustainable lifestyle, making her a true champin f envirnmental stewardship.

Psychlgists have demnstrated that when adults read news stries r transcripts f fictin, they remember mre f the cntent than if they listen t identical pieces.
Researchers fund similar results with university students reading an article versus listening t a pdcast f the text. A related study cnfirms that students d mre mind-wandering when listening t audi than when reading.
Results with yunger students are similar, but with a twist. A study in Cyprus cncluded that the relatinship between listening and reading skills flips(转变)as children becme mre fluent readers. While secnd graders had better cmprehensin with listening, eighth graders shwed better cmprehensin when reading.
Research n learning frm vide versus text eches(呼应)what we see with audi. Fr example, researchers in Spain fund that furth thrugh sixth graders wh read texts shwed far mre mental integratin f the material than thse watching vides. The authrs suspect that students “read” the vides mre superficially because they assciate vide with entertainment, nt learning.
The cllective research shws that digital media have cmmn features and user practices that can cnstrain learning. These include diminished cncentratin, an entertainment mindset, a tendency t multitask, lack f a fixed physical reference pint, reduced use f anntatin and less frequent reviewing f what has been read, heard r viewed.
Digital texts, audi and vide all have educatinal rles, especially when prviding resurces nt available in print. Hwever, fr maximizing learning where mental fcus and reflectin are called fr, educatrs-and parents-shuldn’t assume all media are the same, even when they cntain identical wrds.
8. Accrding t the passage, what difference did researchers find between secnd graders and eighth graders in terms f cmprehensin?
A. Secnd graders had better cmprehensin when reading.
B. Eighth graders shwed better cmprehensin when reading.
C. Eighth graders shwed better cmprehensin when listening.
D. Secnd graders shwed better cmprehensin when watching vides.
9. The underlined wrd “cnstrain” in paragraph 5 prbably means “________”.
A. limit B. enhance C. prmte D. ignre
10. What can we infer frm the passage abut students’attitude twards vide learning?
A. They prefer it ver audi learning.
B. They find it mre engaging than reading.
C. They cnsider it a mre effective learning tl.
D. They assciate it mre with entertainment than with learning.
11. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. All media are equally effective fr learning.
B. Digital media are mre effective than print fr learning.
C. The effectiveness f media fr learning depends n the cntent.
D. Reading is mre effective than listening r watching fr learning.

In designing the rbts f tmrrw, engineers have gained many f their inspiratins frm the kingdm f creatures, with machines that mimic the way plants and animals mve and sense their envirnment.
In recent study, researchers at Crnell University have fund that mycelia, the undergrund parts f mushrms, have the ability t sense chemical and bilgical signals and respnd t multiple inputs. By using the natural electrical signals f mycelia, the researchers fund a new way t cntrl bihybrid (生物混合) rbts, which can react t their surrundings better than traditinal man-made rbts. With great effrts, tw bihybrid rbts were built: a sft rbt shaped like a spider and a wheeled rbt. The rbts respnded t mycelia’s signals by walking and rlling. They als changed their psitin in respnse t light, demnstrating the mycelia’s ability t react t uter influences.
Hwever, finding a way t integrate mushrms and rbts requires mre than just gardening and technical skills. “Yu have t have a backgrund in mechanical engineering, electrnics, sme neurbilgy (神经生物学), and even sme kind f signal prcessing. All these fields cme tgether t build this kind f system,” said Shepherd, prfessr f mechanical and aerspace engineering.
“Living systems respnd t tuch, light, heat and even sme unknwns, like signals. This is why we believe that if we want t build future rbts, they must be able t wrk in unexpected envirnments,” said Mishra, a research assciate in the Organic Rbtics Lab f Crnell University. “By grwing mycelia int the electrnics f a rbt, we were able t allw the bihybrid machine t sense and respnd t the envirnment. In this case we used light as the input, but in the future it will be chemical. The ptential fr future rbts culd be t sense sil chemistry in rw crps and decide when t add mre fertilizer (肥料),” said Shepherd.
12. What des the underlined wrd “mimic” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Cntrl. B. Judge. C. Change. D. Cpy.
13. Why are mycelia used in rbt design?
A. Fr their mushrm shape. B. Fr their perceptin and respnse abilities.
C. Fr their chemical ptential. D. Fr their chemical and bilgical influences.
14. What des Shepherd emphasize abut the prcess in paragraph 3?
A. Technical skills. B. Scientific methds.
C. Subject integratin. D. Innvative applicatin.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the ptential applicatin fr future bihybrid rbts?
A. Mnitring sil cnditin. B. Designing electrnic systems.
C. Replacing human experience. D. Strengthening unknwn signals.

A farm wasn’t my ideal vacatin, but it was still a break frm the rutine. I went thrugh the packing up and planning, barely listening t the instructins. My mind was elsewhere, n the Internet, where my cnversatins never stpped. I was s absrbed in my digital wrld that the first time I really paid attentin t the real wrld was when we get t ur destinatin – a remte farm.
I stared ut the windw t see the breathtaking views utside. The air cming thrugh the pen windws was warm and carried the fresh smell f the frest. But the view wasn’t what caught my attentin. The mment I gt ff the car, I rushed int the farmhuse. The real shck came when I tried t check my e-mail and fund that I had n Internet cnnectin. I was standing there with a lng face when I heard the laughter f three children. S, I went up t them and asked, “Is the Internet available here?”
“We have n Wi-Fi here.” a by, named Ethan, said sftly. And then he tld me they were sns f the farm wner. I lked at him, t depressed t say anything. My laptp wuld be cmpletely useless.
