Fr tw decades, the public knew nthing abut this vital wrk, which went n behind the scenes, thugh she was hugely admired in what we might call prfessinal disaster circles: a vice f calm and a funtain f wisdm. But in 2023, she published a best - selling bk abut her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. Peple became very interested in what she did.
"At literary festivals, mst authrs get questins abut their writing prcess," Easthpe says. "But I wuldn't get thse. What peple wanted frm me was t knw hw I lived with the knwledge that I have. Wasn't I afraid? Hw did I handle it? I wuld tell them that I didn't live afraid, and I wuld give them basic advice. But this wasn't enugh." In the end, she felt she had n chice but t write a secnd bk, ne in which she wuld try t cver all that she has learned fr the benefit f each individual.
While her publisher describes Cme What May as a rad map fr resilience (韧性), the wrd is ne Easthpe dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better ne. Easthpe als reminds peple that small things, like lsing hair during illness r cnsuming t much fd after smene dies, still matter. She encurages peple t remember, nt t frget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a lng - lasting effect.

Plymetallic ndules (多金属结核) n the deep - cean seaflr cntain minerals like cbalt and nickel, which mining cmpanies hpe t harvest fr green - energy batteries and technlgies. Hwever, a recent study suggests these prized, ptat - sized rcks may als serve as a surce f xygen fr the bacteria and ther micrrganisms living there.
Jeffrey Marlw, ne f the authrs f the study, said researchers planted sme watertight structures n the cean flr, which he described as verturned bxes equipped with instruments designed t measure the prperty and cmpsitin f living things and their prbable usage f xygen. Researchers measured the xygen lss ver a 48 - hur perid while the structure was sealed n the seaflr. Typically, a decline in xygen is an indicatr fr bilgical abundance because breathing rganisms cnsume it. Yet, cntrary t all expectatins, they bserved a rise in xygen levels, a finding that directly challenged cnventinal understanding.
But nt everyne is n the same wavelength as him. Canada's The Metals C. stated the study had been rejected by fur scientific publicatins until finding a hme at Nature, which the cmpany labeled as "a jurnal that has lng champined the preservatin f deep - sea mineral." TMC als said the methd was wrng, arguing the team's findings cntradicted ther wrk that had been cnducted in the Pacific Ocean's Clarin - Clipper Zne. "The heightened xygen levels are in fact errneus in the data, and we are currently preparing a peer - reviewed paper as a fightback," said the cmpany.
B Barker, a micrbilgist at Denmark's Aarhus University, said the study invited mre questins than it did answers. He described it as a "nvel but very cnfusing prcess fr which the mechanism is still nt clear."
Fr years, cmpanies such as Canada's TMC have been battling t persuade the internatinal gverning authrity t green - light their plans t btain these rcks in the Pacific Ocean's CCZ. The cmpany has argued that the metals are essential fr fssil fuel - free technlgies and that the impact mining will have n the cean flr is nt nly minimal, but als fades next t the destructin f rain frests and human cmmunities caused by land - based mining.
      28. What can be inferred abut the recent study?
      A. It cast light n new rganisms.B. It capitalized n cstly equipment.
      C. It cnsumed cnsiderable time.D. It dcumented xygen cncentratin.
      29. What des the underlined wrd "errneus" in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Misleading.B. Significant.C. Precise.D. Imaginary.
      30. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?

Wh desn't stand in awe f the advances that science and its STEM siblings (technlgy, engineering, and math) have created t better ur wrld? But since the time f Aristtle, it has als been recgnized that the hard sciences and the humanities must walk side by side in determining human actin.
The ancient Greek philspher praised “practical wisdm” as the “middle grund” between scientific knwledge and what he referred t as the “cunning (狡诈的) intelligence f pliticians, military generals and business leaders”. In his Nicmachean Ethics, he rejected the idea that scientific knwledge alne culd determine the affairs f the cmplex human scial wrld. Likewise, he saw that cunning was insufficient t shape sciety. Aristtle insisted that practical wisdm was required fr the advancement f the human race as it wuld take int accunt what he called “the cmmn gd,” ding what is right fr the majrity f peple living tgether in sciety.
Aristtle’s philsphy is still sund tday. But t the extent that we side with him, we must challenge ur mdern era’s verwhelming emphasis n the STEM disciplines as the key t prgress. Yes, we will cntinue t welcme advances in cmputerizatin, rbtics, medicine and mre. But t ensure these innvatins are in service f the gd life, we must als advance ur thinking in the humanities: philsphy, scial affairs and the arts.
Instead f just STEM, we shuld perhaps be prmting STEMMA. In that case, we will be able t raise a new generatin that has greater capacities fr managing cllective human effrts and appreciating the arts. Management educatin — the new “M” — has nt always been integrated int humanistic thinking, but it must becme mre s. Our gal must be t develp the thughtful leaders f the future. Regarding the “A”, hw culd it be beneficial t the future withut emphasizing the arts, which infrm ur knwledge f beauty and meaning in human affairs? All the brilliant discveries in STEM will nt slve the grand challenges f tday’s wrld — ignrance, pverty, intlerance and plitical cnflict— withut the practical wisdm f humanities-trained leaders.
We can’t march bldly int the future withut the capabilities necessary fr preserving ur human dignity in a wrld f artificial superintelligence (ASI). Humans are nt rbts and neurns are nt digital switches. It is nly thrugh the humanities that we will be able t appreciate the answers that superintelligent cmputers give us when we ask them questins. It is nly thrugh the humanities that we will increasingly recgnize and build n what we humans uniquely are.
      32. What is the limitatin f relying nly n STEM disciplines?
      A. They lack the precisin needed fr mdern innvatins.
      B. They can’t meet the severe challenges f human sciety alne.
      C. They prevent the develpment f artificial superintelligence.
      D. They are t fcused n theretical rather than practical knwledge.
      33. The term “practical wisdm” as used by Aristtle emphasizes ______.
      A. the need fr military strategies in scietal develpment
      B. the imprtance f thughtful business leaders f the future
      C. the advantage f plitical philsphy ver scientific knwledge
      D. the value f balancing scientific knwledge and cunning intelligence
      34. What can we infer abut “STEMMA”?
      A. It directs STEM twards human - centered gals.
      B. It empwers humans t manage the glbal ecnmy.
      C. It represents an educatinal mdel designed t replace STEM.
      D. It suggests art appreciatin is the ultimate slutin t glbal challenges.
      35. Hw des the authr view the relatinship between humans and ASI?
      A. The develpment f ASI cmes at the expense f human dignity.
      B. Human uniqueness is defined by cntrasting it with ASI's capabilities.
      C. ASI's utputs are beynd humans' cmprehensin withut the humanities.
      D. ASI's analytical pwer can make up fr the shrtcmings in the humanities.

A Thughtful Lk Back at 2025
The year 2025 has blessed me with cuntless precius memries, amng which a vlunteer teaching experience stands ut.
Last summer, I went t a remte muntain village schl t teach English t the left - behind children there. At first, my rigid teaching appraches failed t attract them, leaving me utterly frustrated. Hwever, I made sme adjustments by weaving engaging stries and designing interactive games int my lessns, which eventually sparked their enthusiasm fr learning. Laughter eched thrugh the classrm, and their bright eyes became my highlight there.
This meaningful experience taught me that patience and flexibility are far mre imprtant than rigid plans. Additinally, I came t realize that every small attempt we make can bring unexpected warmth and light t thers.
      读后续写:

The amazing effect struck everyne present, including Emma, wh culdn't help but clap her hands. Then an idea struck Easn, "Why nt make a field f butterflies with paint?" As the wrds slipped ut f his muth, everyne cmpeted t put a fingerprint n Easn's paper except Ze. Embarrassed, Ze std still, red in the face. Easn grinned and invited her t jin them. Ze hesitated fr a mment, and then she carefully did it. Easn gave Ze a thumb up, adding, "Smetimes there are nice things hiding where yu dn't expect them."
