Over the past decade, drug-resistant diseases have appeared as a majr health threat. But where d they develp the drug resistance? One surprising thery: they may have develped the resistance n farms, and nt in hspitals.
The crp prtectin prducts farmers use t cntrl many plant diseases are almst the same as the drugs dctrs use t treat infectins, including fungi (真菌). Fungi are cntinually mutating (变异), and with a life cycle measured in days r weeks, they mutate quickly. When a mutatin prduces resistance t a chemical-killing fungi, fungi will jump t any hst that prvides a welcming envirnment, such as a human bdy. And if the treatment fr the fungal infectin invlves a drug similar t the fungicide encuntered n the farm, Fungi may develp quickly in the human bdy-just as they did in the field.
An bvius slutin is t use less fungicide in the field. Reducing fungicide use wuld nt nly slw the develpment f the drug resistance, it wuld help restre diversity t the fungal wrld. Fungicides are a must in the farming cmmunity. Plant diseases pse a majr prblem fr farmers glbally-in sme crps, disease can reduce harvests by mre than 70 percent-and failure t deal with the prblem can mean financial ruin.
Just like Fungi-r, indeed, any living thing-plants cntinually evlve. This is hw natural gene editing (基因编辑) wrks, and withut it, we'd all still be single cells in a salty sup. Thrugh natural selectin, almst any plant will eventually prduce resistance t Fungi. But this can take centuries, s we dn't have the time t wait.
On the ther hand, advances in genetics have given us an understanding f nature's gene editing prcess in plants, helping us develp resistance t a disease. Gene editing techniques can then enable us t prduce disease resistance-just as nature wuld d, if given enugh time.
      12. What can we infer abut Fungi frm Paragraph 2?
      A. They can treat infectin smetimes.
      B. They dn't stp develping new frms.
      C. A human bdy is their favrite place.
      D. There are n Fungi in the fields nw.
      13. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd ''pse'' in paragraph 3?
      A. Slve.B. Face.
      C. Cause.D. Overcme.
      14. What makes a plant prduce resistance t Fungi?
      A. The survival f the fittest.
      B. Advances in technlgy.
      C. The use f farm chemicals.
      D. A welcming envirnment.
      15. What can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Ways t Prevent Drug-resistant Diseases
      B. The Surce f the Drug Resistance
      C. The Ppularity f Gene Editing Techniques
