Artist Willard Wigan is famus fr his creatins f famus paintings like the Mna Lisa, as well as famus figures such as William Shakespeare. But in rder t view his wrks, yu’ll need a micrscpe. Wigan hlds the recrd fr the smallest hand-made sculpture (雕刻作品) ever created.
Wigan’s new shw, “Miniature Masterpieces”, is currently n display in Nttingham, England. As a child, Wigan struggled with reading and writing, which he later realized was related t his undiagnsed autism and dyslexia (孤独症和阅读障碍). With his teacher at schl telling him he wuld achieve nthing, making micr-sized sculptures became a surce f cmfrt fr him. When Wigan’s mther saw his wrks, she encuraged him t make them tinier and tinier; “The smaller yu make things, the bigger yur name will becme.”

Have yu ever been in a place where the backgrund music was s distracting that yu wanted t leave? A new study shws that when the music in a wrkplace des nt match what wrkers need t fcus, it can seriusly affect their md, energy, and perfrmance.
Dr. Kathleen Keeler, c-lead authr f the study, explains that a “music misfit” can be very harmful. If music vlume (音量), speed, r emtinal intensity is inapprpriate, emplyees may feel mre tired, have difficulty cncentrating, and experience lw jb satisfactin. These negative feelings then encurage behavirs that can hurt the cmpany. This issue is largely ignred, despite an estimated 13. 5 millin peple wrking in jbs where backgrund music is cmmn. Managers ften chse music nly t please custmers, mistakenly assuming it wn’t affect staff. The study, published in the Jurnal f Applied Psychlgy, cnsisted f tw parts.
In the initial study invlving 166 full-time nline participants, individuals were first asked t rate their required features f music, such as vlume, speed, and cmplexity. Later, they perfrmed a creativity task while listening t either upbeat pp r sad music. The results clearly shwed a negative effect when the music’s characteristics didn’t match what the participants required. Thse wh experienced a music misfit reprted a decrease in psitive feelings and an increase in mental tiredness.
This prblem was especially bad fr “nn-screeners” wh struggle t fcus n ne sensry input while ignring backgrund nise. Fr them, the negative effects f unfitting music were wrse because they culd nt blck it ut.
The secnd study cnfirmed these findings in a real-wrld setting with 68 wrkers in retail, healthcare, and dining halls. The new finding was that the “music misfit” directly impacted jb perfrmance. On days when the music was prly matched, emplyees were mre likely t act in ways that harmed the cmpany, such as wrking slwly r stealing supplies, and less likely t d psitive things like helping a clleague.
The verall cnclusin is that emplyers need t balance the musical preferences f bth custmers and emplyees.
