When I was 14, my parents made me vlunteer at Greenfield Animal Shelter as punishment fr skipping math class. “Yu need t learn respnsibility,” Mm said, handing me a brightly clred unifrm that was t big. The shelter smelled like wet fur and disinfectant (消毒剂); and my jb was cleaning cages — washing fd frm bwls and sticky flrs.
On my third Saturday, I nticed a glden retriever named Max. His cage card said his wner had passed away, and he’d been at the shelter fr three mnths. Unlike ther dgs, Max cwered in the crner, shaking at every nise. When I entered his kennel, he flattened himself int a trembling pancake.
“He’s sweet but scared f everything,” Ms. Trres, a shelter wrker, tld me. She shwed me ld injuries n his legs frm when he’d tried t bite thrugh the bars.
I decided t spend my breaks with Max. At first, I just sat near his fd bwl, reading alud frm a bk. His breathing slwed t whispers. Sn, he let me tuch his ears. When I drpped my keys, he stepped back but stayed.
“Yu’re making prgress,” Ms. Trres said ne day. “But dn’t get t attached. Dgs like him rarely get adpted.”
I didn’t listen. I brught him a tennis ball, and we played fetch in the utdr pen. His tail wagged a little mre each time. One rainy day, he licked (舔) my hand, and I, with tears in my eyes, felt a lump in my thrat.
Then, ne mrning, a family stpped at Max’s kennel. The yungest girl called him a “glden clud.” Max didn’t hide. He walked frward, tail wagging, and licked her fingers.
As they filled ut the adptin papers, I hid in the strage clset, hugging my knees. I heard their laughter, the jingle f Max’s new cllar, and the sund f the dr shutting. When I came ut, Ms. Trres smiled. “Yu did gd, kid,” she said.
Max taught me that curage isn’t abut being fearless — it’s abut taking small steps tward smething bigger. Nw, whenever I’m scared t try smething new, I remember his wagging tail and the day he trusted the wrld again.

The rich land f the Nile delta is being erded (侵蚀) alng Egypt's Mediterranean cast at an astnishing rate, in sme parts expected at 100 metres per year. In the past, land washed away frm the castline by the currents f the Mediterranean Sea used t be replaced by sediment (沉淀物) brught dwn t the delta by the River Nile, but this is n lnger happening.
Up t nw, peple have blamed this lss f delta land n the tw large Aswan dams in the suth f Egypt, which hld back almst all f the sediment that used t flw dwn the river. Befre the dams were built, the Nile flwed freely carrying huge quantities f sediment. But when the Aswan dams were cnstructed t prvide electricity and irrigatin (灌溉), and t prtect the huge ppulatin centre f Cair frm annual flding and drught, mst f the sediment with its natural fertilizer built up abve the dam in the suthern upstream half f Lake Nasser, instead f passing dwn t the delta.
Nw, hwever, there turns ut t be mre t the stry. It appears that the sediment - free water picks up sand as it erdes the river bed and banks n the 800 - kilmetre trip t Cair. Daniel JeanStanley f the Smithsnian Institute nticed that water samples taken in Cair shwed that the river smetimes carries mre than 850 grams f sediment per cubic metre f water - almst half f what it carried befre the dams were built.
Internatinal envirnmental rganizatins are beginning t pay clser attentin t the regin, partly because f the prblems f ersin and pllutin f the Nile delta, but mainly because they fear the impact this situatin culd have n the whle Mediterranean castal ecsystem.
But there are n easy slutins. In the immediate future, Stanley believes that ne slutin wuld be t make man - made flds t flush ut the delta waterways in the same way that natural flds did befre the cnstructin f the dams. He says, hwever, that in the lng term an alternative prcess such as desalinatin (脱盐) may have t be used t increase the amunt f water available.
      61. What stpped the sediment cming dwn t the delta?
      A. The Mediterranean Sea.B. The River Nile.C. The Aswan dams.D. Lake Nasser.
      62. Why were the Aswan dams built?
      A. T wash ut the river beds.
      B. T ffer electricity and prtectin.
      C. T make the water in the River Nile clean.
      D. T keep the sil in the regin nearby nutrient rich.
      63. What can we infer frm the third paragraph?
      A. There is n need t wrry abut the delta.
      B. The methds f measurement need imprving.
      C. Whether the situatin is gd r nt remains t be seen.
      D. The dams' cnsequences are beynd peple's expectatin.
      64. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
      A. Difficulties t be settled.B. Rewards fr the challenge.
      C. Severe influence f the situatin.D. Pssible slutins t the prblem.
      65. What is the authr's attitude twards the prblems f the Nile delta?
      A. Psitive.B. Unclear.C. Cncerned.D. Negative.

Hw lng des it take fr a rse t blm? Fr a by t grw int a man? Hw lng des it take t prepare yur favrite meal? Hw lng des it take t build a huse with a firm fundatin, r travel t yur favrite destinatin?
My pint is that gd things take time. The best things in life nt nly take time, but are wrth waiting fr. Why, then, d we yield t the temptatin f instant satisfactin? A news piece pps n ur Facebk, and we nly read the headline. We prefer articles that we can skim in 2 minutes but they never teach us anything new. We get
annyed when the waiter takes t lng t bring ut ur fd r get angry when traffic keeps us fr an extra 10 minutes. We give up when it takes t lng t achieve a gal r never start at all.
The best things in life take time, s train yurself t wait patiently fr things t cme. Patience is smething we can all wrk n. Hwever, t much patience causes prcrastinatin and inactin which can keep yu stuck in a bad place fr a really lng time. Passively waiting with n plan f actin is nt the same thing as having the virtue f patience. When yu think f the virtue f patience, think f Aristtle's virtue thery and the glden mean… the glden mean is the perfect midpint between tw extremes.
On ne extreme is the lack f patience which causes impatience, intlerance and rashness— n the ther extreme is indifference and inactin. The perfect middle pint is a virtuus patient individual wh knws hw t wait until it is the right time t act.
S, t achieve yur dreams, yu have t have just the right amunt. Lts f peple have "t much patience" r are cmfrtable passively waiting and end up wasting time. They are willing t put up with lng cmmutes, bad relatinships and unfulfilling jbs just t pay the bills…… passively waiting keeps peple right where they are, stuck in the status qu(现状).
Living the life yu've always imagined and achieving yur dreams will require yu at sme pint t say "enugh is enugh!" In ther wrds, t lse sme patience and give yurself a push t achieve yur dreams. If yu really want t change yur life and achieve yur dreams, yu will need t wrk at it. The first step may be when yu finally say t yurself-enugh is enugh! And the right amunt f patience will mve yu clser.
Be patient enugh with yurself s yu keep ging. Dn't be s patient with yurself that yu put ff fr tmrrw what yu culd d tday and yu will achieve yur gals.

      A. stick tB. give in tC. hld backD. hand ver t

      A. We tend t read the news quickly s that we can learn smething new.
