W: Recycling is gd fr the envirnment. It can als benefit a cmmunity in surprising ways. Mate Lange, 15, knws this well. On weekends, yu’ll find him srting thrugh glass and plastic bttles in his hmetwn f Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a cmmunity recycling prgram.
Mate started the prgram in 2020. He was 11 and in the sixth grade, playing baseball with the Nrthern Michigan Cyclnes. The team was new and needed mney t travel t cmpetitins. Mate gt a plan.
“There were always cans and bttles n the rad,” he tld TIME fr Kids. In Michigan, these can be cllected and “becme” cash. With his father’s help, Mate started a bttle and can drive. It raised $7,500. “We built up s much mney in just a few weeks,” he said. “S I said, ‘Why dn’t we keep this ging as lng as we can?’” Since then, his recycling effrt has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 lcal yuth grups.
In 2023, Mate was awarded a Glria Barrn Prize fr Yung Heres. The award hnrs kids and teens wh are wrking t help thers and prtect the planet. Mate believes everyne can — and shuld — be f service. “Just d a little bit t help make the wrld a better place,” he said. “Be creative, have an idea and build n it.”
