Mr. Allen has had truble walking since he brke his backbne in a fall dwn the stairs, and he expects t lse his driver’s license when it cmes up fr renewal given his physical state. Mrs. Allen recently gt her ft hurt getting ut f bed. Neither can climb up t change the light r bend under the sink t fix a leak. Withut utside help, stres and public lcatins mean unimaginable hikes t them.
S the Allens have banded tgether with their neighbrs, wh are equally determined t avid being frced frm their hmes by dependence. Alng with mre than 100 cmmunities natinwide, their grup is part f a mvement t make neighbrhds cmfrtable places t grw ld in.
“We are ttally dependent n urselves,” Mr. Allen said. “But I want t live in a mixed cmmunity, nt just with the elderly. And as lng as we can d it here, that’s what we want.”
Their grup has been registered as a nnprfit crpratin, is setting membership dues, and is lining up prviders f transprtatin, hme repair, cmpaninship, security and ther services t meet their needs at hme fr
      as lng as pssible.
Urban planners say this mvement, rganized by residents instead f gvernment agencies, culd make “aging in place” safe and affrdable fr a majrity f elderly peple. Althugh nt the cure- all fr thse with cmplicated medical needs, the apprach addresses what experts say can be a premature decisin by lder peple t give up their hmes in respnse t relatively small prblems. As these small prblems munt, smetimes accmpanied by pressure frm adult children, the elderly hmewner is caught ff guard. Remaining at hme withut sufficient help is frightening. “If peple dn’t feel s verpwered, they dn’t have t jump at precipitus decisins.
Actually practices like mving int nursing hmes are hard t be reversed,” said an expert.
Fr inspiratin, “aging in place” grups nw pay yearly dues — $580 fr an individual in exchange fr the security f knwing that carpenters, chefs, cmputer experts r hme health helpers are ne phne call away.

In 1879, an 8-year-ld girl made a discvery that wuld rck ur understanding f human histry. On the walls f Altamira cave in nrthern Spain, she sptted amazing drawings f wild cws, painted in vivid red and black. Mre striking even than the images was their age: they were made thusands f years ag by mdern humans’ suppsedly
primitive ancestrs. Tday, nearly 400 caves acrss Eurpe have been fund decrated with hand stencils (模板), strange symbls and beautiful images f animals created by these skillful artists.
The discveries led t the view that artistic talent arse after mdern humans arrived in the regin sme 40,000 years ag, as part f a “cultural explsin” reflecting a flwering f the human mind. But mre recent evidence has blwn this idea ut f the water. Fr a start, mdern humans might nt have been the first artists in Eurpe. What’s mre, a cllectin f cave paintings emerging in Indnesia has dismissed the idea that Eurpe was the centre f creativity.
Lcal peple have lng knwn that the caves f the island f Sulawesi Indnesia, cntain many painted images.
Mdern humans are thught t have reached the regin sme 65,000 years ag, but nbdy imagined the art culd be very ld because ancient paintings seem unlikely t survive in the envirnment f high temperatures. A team f researchers led by Maxime Aubert, nw at Griffith University in Australia, upended this idea using a technique that
is shifting ur understanding f cave art. Using this technique in seven caves, they fund a hand stencil was at least 39,900 years ld, making it the ldest knwn hand stencil at that time.
This pened a fldgate t new discveries in Indnesia. These included a hunting scene created at least 43,900 years ag, and by far the ldest descriptive artwrk. “When we fund that image, we were abslutely delighted, but when it turned ut t be that ld, we were almst jumping with jy,” says Adam Brumm, als at Griffith University.
What did the girl find in the cave?
      Wild animals.B. Ancient images.
      C. Painting techniques.D. Recrding artists.
What was a misunderstanding remved by recent evidence abut the cave art?
It can be traced back t Eurpe.
It reflected the flwering f human minds.
Mdern humans led t its rise in Indnesia.
Mdern humans might nt have been real artists.
What des the underlined wrd “upended” mean in paragraph 3?
      A. Prved.B. Strengthened.C. Overturned.D. Overemphasized.
What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
The amazing discveries.B. The researchers’ expectatins.
      C. The benefits f the technique.D. The descriptin f the cave art.
      D
Until recently, gravitatinal waves culd have been the stuff f Einstein’s imaginatin. Befre they were detected, these waves in space time existed nly in the physicist’s general thery f relativity, as far as scientists knew. Nw, researchers are n the hunt fr mre ways t detect the waves. “The study f gravitatinal waves is bming,” says astrphysicist Karan Jani f Vanderbilt University in Nashville. “This is just remarkable. N field I can think f in fundamental physics has seen prgress this fast.”
Just as light cmes in a variety f wavelengths, s d gravitatinal waves. Different wave lengths pint t different types f rigins f the universe and require different kinds f detectrs. Gravitatinal waves with wavelengths f a few thusand kilmeters — like thse detected by the United States, Italy and Japan — cme mstly frm pairs f black hles 10 r s times the mass f the sun, r frm cllisins f dense csmic blcks called neutrn stars ( 中子星). These detectrs culd als spt waves frm certain types f explding stars and rapidly mving
      neutrn stars.
In cntrast, huge waves that span light-years are thught t be created by rbiting pairs f bigger black hles with masses billins f times that f the sun. In June, scientists reprted the first strng evidence f these types f waves by turning the entire galaxy (星系) int a detectr, watching hw the waves make slight changes t the timing f regular blinks frm neutrn stars thrughut the Milky Way.
Physicists nw hpe t dive int a vast, csmic cean f gravitatinal waves f all srts f sizes. These waves culd reveal new details abut the secret lives f extic bjects such as black hles and unknwn parts f the universe. Physicist Jasn Hgan f Stanfrd University thinks there are still a lt f gaps in the cverage f wavelengths. “But it makes sense t cver all the bases. Wh knws what else we may find?” he says. The search fr capturing the full cmplement f the universe’s gravitatinal waves exactly culd take bservatries ut int the mn, t the
      atmic area and elsewhere.
What des Karan Jani think f the current study n gravitatinal waves?
      It is rapid and pineering.
It is slw but steadily increasing.
It is interrupted due t limited detectrs.
It is prgressing as fast as any ther field.
What d the detected gravitatinal waves mstly indicate?
The creatin f different kinds f detectrs.
Cllisins f planets utside the slar system.
The presence f light in different wavelengths.
Activities invlving black hles and neutrn stars.
Hw did scientists manage t find huge waves’ evidence?
      By analyzing sunlight.
      By lcating the new galaxy.
By using the whle galaxy as a tl.
By bserving the sun’s regular mvement.
What can be inferred abut the future study accrding t the last paragraph?
      It’ll exclude the atmic field.
It’ll fcus exactly n the mapping f the galaxy.
It’ll require priritizing certain wavelengths n the mn.
It’ll explre ptential places t detect gravitatinal waves.

17 Peple wh think psitively demnstrate increased life spans, lwer rates f depressin and
anxiety, better physical and psychlgical health, reduced risks f death frm heart prblems. Psitive thinking als cntributes t ne's ability t deal with prblems and hardships.18Fr example, researchers have fund
that in the case f a crisis accmpanied by strng emtins, such as a natural disaster, psitive thinking can prvide a srt f buffer against depressin and anxiety. Resilient peple wh think psitively tend t treat every prblem as a challenge, a chance fr imprvement f any kind, r as an pprtunity fr persnal grwth. Pessimists, n the cntrary, tend t perceive prblems as a surce f additinal stress.19
In cnclusin, psitive thinking is a pwerful and effective tl fr dealing with hard times and imprving the quality f ne's life. It desn't have anything t d with ignrant ptimism when an individual refuses t ntice a prblem.20
Thinking in a psitive, self-encuraging way brings abut many benefits t ne's physical and mental health.
It desn't cause any severe emtinal discmfrt, either.
      Negative self-talk damages self-cnfidence and decreases self-respect.
It helps ne t remain clear-headed and cnfident in difficult situatins.
Psitive thinking has several beneficial effects n the bdy and the mind.
As thinking changes, an individual's behaviur and habits change as well.
They ften ffer a real alternative t the cmmn and regular way f thinking.
They ften feel discuraged lng befre trying t slve the prblem, even if small.

When he arrived at his father’s huse, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began t search thrugh his
father’s imprtant papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ag. Tears welling up in his eyes, he pened the Bible and began t turn the pages. He std there, paralysed with shck, a car key drpping frm the back f the Bible, which had a tag with the dealer’s name and the date f his graduatin, the same dealer wh had the sprts car he had desired.
Hw many times d we miss blessings because they are nt packaged as we expected? Smetimes we dn’t realize the gd frtune we have r we culd have because we expect “the packaging” t be different. What may appear as bad frtune may in fact be the dr that is just waiting t be pened. We are suppsed t arm urselves with the capacity t explre the truth. A prfund understanding f the wrld and its cmplexities reveals that the truth ften lies beneath the surface, cncealed by the veil f appearances.
