My backpack weighed 53 punds, full f dried fd, water and ther bits and bbs. I was ready fr my first thrugh-hike fr 15 days, setting ut n the 180-kilmetre Sunshine Cast Trail, Canada’s lngest hut-t-hut trail (小路).
While I was in the cmpany f ther hikers n mst nights, the-secnd hut was empty. A hidden path nearby led t a rugh bench n a small knll (土墩) verlking a clearing. I imagined smene had created and placed this bench in this exact spt nt fr themselves but fr future hikers seeking a mment’s peace in the wilderness.
I came t cherish the slitude (孤独). Having the frest entirely t myself, I sat and stared ut at what felt like my wn private lake, daydreaming while watching the grass waving and listening t the gentle sund f the water. Out here, I didn’t need t accmmdate anyne else’s needs and wants. I culd just be me with the freedm t d whatever I wanted, N schedule, n rush and nt a care in the wrld.
The trail varied a lt. Smetimes it was wide and flat; ther times it snaked thrugh the frest with n end in sight. The reflective range trail markers guided me — squares fr suthbund and diamnds fr nrthbund. It’s hard t get lst, even fr smene like me with n sense f directin.
Thrugh-hiking creates a hiker’s grapevine (小道消息). At ne hut, I was tld abut a man frm France wh might be cming my way. Later, a pair f hikers als spke f this happy, easyging Frenchman with lng, curly brwn hair hiking at a leisurely pace. Over the next tw days, smene even asked if I was that Frenchman, which made me laugh. While I was preparing dinner n tp f Tin Hat Muntain, a man with lng brwn hair apprached me, “Are yu Tmmy?” “Pierre?” I shuted. It turned ut Pierre learned f my existence frm all the hut lgbks I signed. He’d caught up t me and we became friends even befre meeting.
Why d peple g thrugh-hiking? Is it t be in nature? T see beautiful views? One culd d thse things withut all this hassle (麻烦,繁琐的事). I sught independence and adventure, t experience a different utlk n life, and t truly live and feel the raw grandness f the wrld. It was a quest — t visit every hut n the trail and make it frm start t finish n my wn tw feet.
In the end, I settled back int city life with these memries and a slightly changed perspective abut what’s imprtant. The next time I’m at wrk, listening t c-wrkers’, cmplaint, my mind will wander back t life n the trail — cntent and free.

In baseball, pitchers (投手) need bth psychlgy and skill t strike ut batters. Varius pitchers have different ways t “psych ut” batters. Sme try t make the batters think that they are crazy. One majr league pitcher was knwn t cver his unifrm with dirt during the game s that batters wuld think he was nthing but a slb (懒汉、笨蛋). A batter wuld take ne lk at this pitcher and think there was n way he culd really pitch well. The pitcher struck ut a lt f batters that way. Other pitchers als tried switching their pitching hands during the game and even thrwing balls ver r behind the batters in rder t psych them ut.
Smetimes pitchers d nt need t d anything at all t psych ut batters. The pitcher can just stand n the mund (土堆) and take his time pitching. This messes up the batter’s timing. A pitcher might als wait fr the batter t step up t hme plate, and then step ff the pitcher’s mund t thrw a few balls t first base fr practice. One pitcher famus fr his fast ball wuld stand n the pitcher’s mund and just stare at the batter. This gave the batter plenty f time t think abut the pitch that was abut t be thrwn. When the pitcher saw that the batter was starting t feel ill at ease, he let his fast ball fly. It was an excellent tactic (战术) fr this pitcher.
Sme pitchers rely less n skill and mre n cheating t get their pitches past batters. These pitchers can “scuff” r “lad” balls t make them fly unpredictably. A scuffed ball is a ball that has been scraped r cut, usually with sandpaper. A pitcher might keep a small piece f sandpaper in his glve r even buried in the pitcher’s mund. Scuffed balls can fly left r right r even drp lw when they are pitched crrectly. Laded balls are balls which have smething n them. This “smething” might include spit, sweat, r even petrleum jelly (凡士林). A pitcher can put a little bit f petrleum jelly in his armpit (腋窝), under the frnt f his hat, r even under his shelaces befre a game. When this jelly is put n the ball, the ball will drp belw a batter’s swing as the ball flies ver hme plate.
Pitching scuffed r laded balls is illegal, and a pitcher wh is caught ding this can be thrwn ut f the game r even suspended frm a team. Hwever, sme pitchers still take the chance.
      38. Why wuld a pitcher cver his unifrm with dirt during a game?
      A. T shw he is nt serius abut the game.
      B. T make batters underestimate his pitching ability.
      C. T avid being recgnized by the ppnents.
      D. T mess up the batter’s timing.
      39. Accrding t the passage, hw can a pitcher mess up a batter’s timing?
      A. By switching his pitching hand suddenly.
      B. By thrwing balls ver the batter’s head fast.
      C. By staring at the batters and taking his time t pitch.
      D. By scuffing the ball with sandpaper.

      B. By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages f each tactic.
      C. By telling a stry abut a famus pitcher’s successful experience.
      D. By intrducing different types f pitching tactics in baseball.
      D
Lneliness has been cast as a public health crisis, even deadly. A 2010 study fund that thse with weaker scial relatinships had a higher risk f early mrtality (死亡率) than thse wh did nt. The dangers f lneliness are cuntless — scial islatin is assciated with a. greater risk f cardivascular (心脑血管) disease, strke, depressin, and anxiety.
Almst everyne feels lnely n ccasin, but smetimes lneliness is a cnsequence f nging islatin brught n by busyness, depressin, a significant life change — like a mve, a breakup, the birth f a child, r sme cmbinatin f all f the abve. Sme peple’s lives are particularly islating, especially if they live alne, wrk remtely, and dn’t ften interact with thers.
On the ther hand, t much scial interactin can be equally exhausting. An essential aspect f a well-balanced scial life is alne time, a chance t recharge, accrding t research. A teacher wh interacts with students and clleagues all day may nt have the bandwidth (带宽) t vlunteer t lead a birding walk.
Fighting ff bth lneliness and scial exhaustin is a difficult task. Because everyne’s scial lives and scial desires vary s greatly, researchers are unable t prescribe (开处方) a set amunt f interactin fr a fulfilled life. Only we can identify ur right dse f time spent with thers. Hwever, we ften aren’t paying enugh attentin t ur interpersnal interactins t determine whether we’ re feeling scially satisfied. It isn’t until we’ re in the depths f lneliness r scially verextended (社交过度) that we realize we need smething: a psitive talk with a friend, a few chats with a stranger n the bus, r a weekend alne with a gd bk.
“The really irnic thing is a lt f peple dn’t have that self-insight. We’ve interacted with peple ur whle lives — we have friends and we have partners and a lt f what we d every day is talking t ther peple,” says William Chpik, a scial-persnality psychlgist and an assciate prfessr at Michigan State University. “I dn’t think a lt f peple sit dwn and really take stck f the exact amunt f scial interactin that makes them cmfrtable.”
Being intentinal with yur interpersnal cntact and maintaining a variety f cnversatin partners are crucial t supprting a healthy scial life. Keeping lneliness at bay requires a nminal (少量的), yet cmmitted, effrt: At the end f a day, week, r mnth, take stck f with whm yu scialized, what kinds f interactins yu had, and whether yu feel emtinally satisfied t get a clearer picture f yur scial intake.
      42. What is the purpse f the third paragraph in the passage?
      A. T stress the imprtance f having a certain amunt f alne time.
      B. T give an example f a jb that invlves t much interactin.
      C. T suggest a way t balance scial interactin and lneliness.
      D. T challenge a ppular belief that islatin is harmful t ur health.
      43. Why des William Chpik find it irnic that peple lack self-insight when it cmes t interactin?
      A. Because peple tend t g t extremes in scial interactin.
      B. Because peple always ignre what they spend mst time n.
      C. Because peple fail t make meaningful cnnectins with ther peple.
      D. Because peple struggle t determine their ideal scial interactin amunt.
      44. Accrding t the passage, hw can peple maintain a healthy scial life?
      A. Maintaining a balance between busyness and relaxatin.
      B. Engaging in activities that require little scial interactin.
      C. Reflecting n scial interactins and emtinal satisfactin.
      D. Cmparing ur scial interactins with thse f thers.
      45. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
      A. Hw much scial interactin d yu actually need?
      B. What is the impact and significance f lneliness?
      C. What are the strategies fr vercming lneliness?
      D. Hw t balance scial interactin and alne time?
