The Palisades Fire in Ls Angeles burned Charltte Trags's hme t the grund. "It was a pretty special and unique huse," says Trags, wh escaped with her parents, her yunger sister and their three dgs when the fire brke ut n January 7, 2025.
A few days after the fire started, a friend shared a vide with her f a Ls Angeles artist ffering t create, fr free, waterclr paintings f peple's hmes
befre they were burned dwn. Trags reached ut t the artist, Jrdan Heber, asking if she culd d Trags's childhd hme. "I wanted t d it as a surprise t my parents, wh are extremely busy right nw," she says. Trags sent a pht t Heber, wh cmpleted a painting f Trags's hme in just three days.
"Our hmes are s much mre than these physical, standing things that we keep ur belngings in," says Heber, wh lives in Santa Mnica. "It's an incredible hnr t create these lasting respects t the places that carried s much life and memry." Trags says she will frever be grateful t Heber. "It means the wrld," she says. "We're in a psitin where we have nthing, and anything like that, especially pieces that hnr what the huse meant t us — it is really inspiring."
Behind this deeply cmfrting gift, thugh, lies the heartfelt mtivatin(初衷,动力) that drve Heber t act when the wildfires struck. A friend sent her a pst by anther lcal artist ffering t draw peple's hmes at n charge, and Heber was inspired. "This will be my way t help peple," said Heber. Shrtly after she psted her ffer n scial media, requests started cming in. Heber has created mre than 25 paintings, including ne fr Jeremy Wineberg, whse hme in Pacific Palisades was destryed.
"We tld her ur stry, and she s kindly and lvingly made such a beautiful memry that lks exactly as if it was a phtgraph," says Wineberg. "We're ging t frame it and put it in ur new hme eventually." Heber is glad that peple find her paintings meaningful, saying, "Hpefully it inspires thers t use their talents t help peple."

Fr a lng time, plant tissues were thught t be incapable f remaking. When that was disprved in the early 1900s, researchers fcused largely n rts, where many bacteria (细菌) are invlved in sil - based fd cycling. Whatever might be living within a plant's shts, trunks and leaves was mstly ignred.
Fr a recent - study in Nature, researchers analyzed abut 150 trees acrss 16 species t map their trunk micrbial cmmunities. They estimate (估计) a single mature tree hsts rughly ne trillin bacteria in its “micrbime” (微生物组) with distinct cmmunities in different layers. In ther wrds, the trees have methane (甲烷) - prducing bacteria which may release greenhuse gases. “It turned ut what's living inside the trees was really different frm what we fund anywhere else in the frest,” says the study's c - lead authr, Jnathan Gewirtzman, an ecsystem eclgist at Yale University.
T examine the trunk's hidden cmmunity, Gewirtzman and his clleagues drilled int living tree trunks t cllect thin cre samples, which they immediately frze with dry ice t prevent micrbial activity. They then separated the cres int side wd and heartwd, grund the frzen wd int pwder and rdered the bacteria in each layer. T study the activity f living micrbes, they als sealed hles drilled int trees and later measured gases such as methane released by different layers.
The researchers learned that when trees are evlutinarily clse, they tend t have similar micrbimes. And the team fund a surprise deep inside the trunks: “In the lder and inner heartwd,” Gewirtzman says, “we saw micrbes mre like what yu'd find in a wetland — anaerbic bacteria and methane prducers,” species suited t a waterlgged and xygen - pr envirnment.
Sme bacteria in the uter layers may cnsume part f that methane, the researchers fund, but the study suggests that methane - prducing bacteria inside trees culd still create greenhuse gas emissins (排放) scientists shuld figure int calculatins.
"It is a really nice study, as they did smething different frm mst: cmparing the inner wd against the uter wd. By studying these natural plant - micrbe partnerships, we can understand which bacteria are imprtant and active t add back int ur agricultural system," a plant micrbilgist says.
28. What can we learn abut the lng - standing view regarding plant tissues?
A. It claimed that plant tissues culd nt regrw.
B. It was disprved by research n sil fd cycling.
C. It stressed the rle f bacteria in plant shts and leaves.
D. It was fully supprted by studies n plant rts in the 1900s.
29. What des the Nature study reveal abut the bacterial cmmunities in tree trunks?
A. Bacteria in different tree species share same characteristics.
B. Bacterial cmmunities in tree trunks are identical t thse in rts.
C. The number f bacteria in a tree's micrbime is fixed at ne trillin.
D. Certain bacteria within tree trunks culd cntribute t greenhuse gases.
30. What is the primary fcus f the researchers' wrk in paragraph 3?
A. Cmparing the gas - releasing abilities f different tree species.
B. Develping effective ways t preserve tree trunk cre samples.
C. Explring tree trunk micrbes by varius experimental methds.
D. Analyzing the relatinship between tree age and micrbial variety.
31. What is the significance f the study n tree trunk micrbes?
A. It helps understand key bacteria fr agricultural system imprvement.
B. It updates the lng - standing view that plant tissues are extremely active.
C. It finds a way t clear away methane - prducing bacteria in tree trunks.
D. It prves that tree rts are less imprtant than trunks fr fd cycling.

Dctrs struggle t predict wh will have a heart attack. Culd AI help? Nw many cmpanies are applying AI algrithms t screen millins f CT scans fr early signs f heart disease. This technlgy culd be a breakthrugh fr public health, but it remains unprven bradly while raising tricky questins abut applicatin and even hw we define disease.
Crnary artery calcium (CAC), a marker fr heart attack risk, and testing fr CAC remains an underused methd f predicting heart attack risk. CAC scans were
believed t have a bit benefit and were marketed t the wrried well. Attitudes, thugh, may be shifting. Mre expert grups are supprting CAC scres as a way t imprve heart attack risk estimates and persuade dubtful patients t start taking a specific type f pill The prmise f AI - derived CAC scres is part f a brader trend tward mining treasures f medical data t spt therwise undetected disease. But while it seems prmising, the practice raises plenty f questins. Fr example, CAC scres haven't prved useful as an effective instrument fr universal screening. A 2022 Danish study evaluating a ppulatin - based prgram, fr example, shwed n benefit in death rates fr patients wh had experienced CAC screening tests.
If AI delivered this infrmatin autmatically, wuld the calculatin really change? And with widespread adptin, abnrmal CAC scres will becme cmmn. Wh fllws up n these findings? "Many health systems aren't yet set up t act n incidental risk findings at scale," says Nishith Khandwala, the cfunder f Bunkerville Health. "Withut a standard prcedure fr ding s", he says, "yu risk creating mre wrk than value." There's als the questin f whether these AI - created scres wuld actually imprve patient care. Fr patients with symptms, a CAC scre f zer may ffer a false sense f security. Fr asymptmatic patients with a high CAC scre, the next steps remain uncertain. In bth cases, the nrmal pattern f diagnsis(诊断)—in which dctrs and patients purpsely test t figure ut what's causing a specific prblem—was cmpletely disturbed.
But, as Adam Rdman, wh pays special attentin t the prblems in the applicatin f AI in disease diagnsis, ntes that incident diseases were still fund by humans reviewing the scans. Nw, he says, "we are entering an era f'machine - based disease classificatin', where algrithms define diseases n their wn terms." As machines make mre diagnses, they may catch things we miss. Hwever, hlding the pen as they switch between patients and algrithmic utputs—dctrs still matter.
32. What can we learn abut AI - created CAC scres?
A. They can replace dctrs in the prcess f heart disease diagnsis.
B. They may bring new challenges t the traditinal pattern f medical diagnsis.
C. They have already been fully used in the existing health systems wrldwide.
D. They have been widely prven t reduce the death rate f heart disease patients.
33. Hw des the authr develp the passage?
A. By giving glbal fficial data and trends.
B. By presenting prblems and expert pinins.
C. By listing benefits and methds f AI - CAC scres.
D. By cmparing AI screening with traditinal methds.
34 What is the authr's attitude tward AI - based CAC scres in heart disease screening?
A. Supprtive.B. Critical.C. Cautius.D. Dubtful.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In recent years, scientists have uncvered a fascinating truth: ur muscles pssess a distinct memry fr mvement and exercise. We've all bserved that cnsistent physical exercise builds bigger, strnger muscles — but the science behind this prcess is far mre cmplex than meets the eye.
35 Hwever, few knw the bilgical prcess behind this muscle recvery rule. As leading muscle scientist Adam Sharples explains, human skeletal muscle cells are unique. Lng, thin fibers with multiple cres, they grw via stress/injury - activated satellite cells dnating cmpnents t bst muscle grwth and recvery.
Crucially, these cre parts persist in muscle fibers despite lng inactivity, aiding muscle grwth resumptin as a bilgical advantage. Sharples' lab made histry in 2018 by prving human skeletal muscle retains exercise - induced grwth memry, enabling rapid respnses t later wrkuts even after lng breaks. In ther wrds, yur muscles remember hw t grw. 36
Sharples als pints ut cnvincing new evidence that muscles stre memries f tissue lss, with clear differences between yunger and lder muscle tissue. Yung muscle shws what he calls a "psitive" tissue lss memry: after an initial perid f wasting away, it recvers strngly and avids greater lss during later tissue lss perids. 37 This negative memry makes lder muscle mre vulnerable t severe tissue lss and causes an extreme cell reactin during recvery.
This pattern reveals a key balance: "negative" muscle memries can reduce the benefits f "psitive" nes. 38 It als shws why lng perids f inactivity can be mre harmful fr lder adults.
39 The mre regularly we exercise and challenge them, the better they can make gd use f this natural ability t becme a lasting, beneficial part f ur bdies lng int the future.
A. On the ther hand, lder muscle has a mre bvius "negative" memry.
B. The main result is clear: muscles have their wn frm f intelligence.
C. Even a shrt break frm exercise will erase the prgress yu've made in building muscle.
D. This discvery hasn't changed traditinal views f hw muscles adapt t physical activity ver time.
E. In shrt, Sharples' research shws muscles keep an exercise memry t help grw faster after breaks.
F. This balance between different types f muscle memries has imprtant effects fr fitness and aging.
G. Many peple have experienced the fact f regaining muscle faster after a break frm wrking ut.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题,第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
Yu dn't have t give up sugar r run a marathn t see real changes in yur health and happiness. Instead, science supprts a "start small" way. Small actins, dne regularly, are what create lng - lasting changes.
The secret? It's nt willpwer. It's nt even gals. The best way t turn a small change int a pwerful habit is nt t fcus n yur mtivatin, yur reasns fr ding it, r yur lng - term gals.
Wait, what? Isn't mtivatin the whle pint f New Year's reslutins? Aren't gals suppsed t fuel us?
That is what everyne thinks, but research has shwn that making small changes t the envirnment, the situatin in which yu perfrm the behavir, is far mre pwerful. Gals aren't bad; they certainly have a purpse, but "mtivatin" nly lasts fr s lng. Habits need t be tw things t stick: easy and enjyable.
Fr example, d yu think yur gal f getting back int the same size jeans yu wre in high schl will inspire yu t hit the gym every day? Prbably nt. What will, then? Chsing a gym that's clse t yur huse, ideally less than 5 miles, was the strngest factr fr predicting gym attendance in ur research. Even better if yu are ding an activity, yu really enjy r meeting a gd friend there.
The best part: Once these tiny changes take rt, they add up — better sleep, strnger muscles, calmer mds and a sharper mind.
Just as cmpund interest grws wealth ver time, small, cnsistent habits can lead t great health imprvements. Start nw by chsing ne r tw f these small habits that suit yu. Once yu feel cnfident with these, add similar habits fr even greater benefits.
Instead f trying t change everything r frcing yurself t d smething yu hate, fcus n tw questins: Hw can I make it easy t d? And hw can I make it enjyable? That's hw yu change yur life, ne small change at a time.
40. What can create lng - lasting changes?
41. What kind f habits are easy t stick t?
42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
➤ In ur research, chsing a gym far frm hme was the mst imprtant factr in ensuring gym attendance.
43. Besides the examples given in the text, what a small, regular habit d yu have t imprve yur health r daily life? And explain why it wrks fr yu. (In abut 40 wrds)
