THE MOMENT was cmpletely unexpected. It came in 2013, when Jane Gdall was 79, and was helping return a chimpanzee (黑猩猩) called Wunda t the wild. They had nt met befre. As Wunda stepped nervusly frm her cage, she suddenly jumped int Jane’s arms t embrace (拥抱) and kiss her. Ms Gdall never frgt the warmth f that embrace.
It might have been a thank-yu frm all chimpanzees. She had spent her whle life with them. In 1957, she went t Tanzania and started studying chimpanzees in the Gmbe Stream Natinal Park.
Her mst imprtant sighting, thugh, came when she nticed David, a chimpanzee, sitting by an ant hill. In his hand was a grass stem, which he stuck int the nest t bring ut ants t eat. Anther time he used a small branch frm which he had pulled ff the leaves. In shrt, he was preparing and using tls. Her greatest discvery brke the lng-held idea that nly humans culd d this, shaking the field f human studies. She named chimpanzees like David instead f giving them numbers, as she saw them as individuals with unique persnalities, jys, and fears.
Hwever, chimpanzees sn faced great dangers. Their numbers were greatly reduced due t the bush-meat trade, and their habitats were destryed. This pained Gdall deeply, and she turned frm a scientist int an activist. She didn’t just speak ut; she wrked clsely with lcal cmmunities, teaching villagers t grw crps withut cutting dwn frests and setting up safe znes fr chimps t mve freely.
In 1991, she set up Rts & Shts, a prgramme that encuraged schl children t d small things t help animals, neighburs r the land. In 2002, she became a UN messenger f peace, but she saw herself mre as a messenger f hpe.
Her life prved that passin and care culd bridge the gap between humans and nature, inspiring peple wrldwide t prtect ur shared wrld.
      4. Why des the writer mentin the embrace in paragraph 1?
      A. T celebrate Wunda’s returning t the wild.
      B. T explain chimpanzees’ friendliness twards humans.
      C. T hnr Gdall’s lifelng cntributin t chimpanzees.
      D. T shw the cnnectin between Gdall and chimpanzees.
      5. Why is Jane Gdall’s discvery abut chimpanzees imprtant?

      D. It prvides new evidence that chimpanzees have feelings.

Tsunamis are huge waves caused by earthquakes r vlcanic eruptins. They can travel as fast as a jet plane (644 km/h) acrss the cean, but yu can hardly see them in deep water. This made it hard fr scientists t warn peple in time, until NASA created a disaster alert system called Guardian.
In July 2025, a strng earthquake hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Minutes later, alarms rang acrss the Pacific, and millins were rdered t leave their hmes. What made this event histric was Guardian’s respnse: Using artificial intelligence and satellite signals, it detected (测出) the tsunami just 20 minutes after the quake, warning Hawaii 30-40 minutes befre waves arrived. Thugh the 1.7-meter waves caused nly minr flding, the system prved its value.
Hw des Guardian wrk? When a tsunami mves large amunts f water up and dwn, it disturbs the air high abve Earth. This air layer, called the insphere (电离层), has tiny charged particles (微粒). The disturbance changes the number f these particles, which slws dwn signals frm navigatin satellites. By measuring the slwdwn, Guardian spts tsunamis in near real time.
Guardian is better than ld tls. It nt nly gives mre cmplete and faster infrmatin, but als helps detect vlcanes and nuclear tests. But it’s nt perfect. If a tsunami starts clse t a cast, Guardian can’t warn peple fast enugh. Fr cmmunities near the center f quake, the insphere’s 10-t-30-minute respnse (反应) time is t slw. But fr distant areas, like thse hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 228,000 peple, Guardian culd save cuntless lives.
As Eurpe develps its wn similar system and Guardian gets upgraded t predict wave size and landfall time, the future f tsunami warning lks brighter. This breakthrugh reminds us that innvatin ften cmes frm thinking beynd ld tls, turning changes f satellite signals int a lifeline fr castal peple.
      8. Why was the 2025 tsunami special?
      A. It spread thrughut the Pacific Ocean.
      B. Many peple had t leave their hmes.
      C. It was caused by a pwerful earthquake.
      D. Early warnings were sent befre it arrived.
      9. Hw des Guardian detect tsunamis?
A By making use f traditinal cean tls.
      B. By cunting the number f charged particles.
      C. By bserving the size f waves in deep water.
      D. By measuring the slwdwn f satellite signals.
      10. In what situatin can Guardian be mre effective t save lives?
      A. When a tsunami spreads fast.
      B. When a tsunami is huge enugh.
      C. When a tsunami hits the distant areas.
      D. When a tsunami starts all f a sudden.
      11. What will Guardian prbably d in the future?
      A. It will be equipped with new satellites.
      B. It will be replaced by new warning systems.
      C. It will be imprved t carry ut mre tasks.
      D. It will prevent tsunamis frm getting serius.
      D
Exams are nerve-racking. The silence f the hall; the ticking f the clck, it is nt surprising that anxius test-takers ften perfrm wrse than thers. Yet recent research in Psychlgical Science by Maria Thebald at the Leibniz Institute and her wrkmates suggests that it is nt the pressure f the exam hall which causes the prblem. It is the pressure f revisin.
Dr Thebald suppsed that if anxiety limited students’ ability t apply knwn infrmatin, highly anxius students wuld perfrm wrse in real exams than in mcks (模拟考试) r nline practice.
She therefre wrked with 309 German medical students wh were preparing fr their final state exam. This test includes 230 questins divided int three five-hur perids ver three days.
During the 100 days befre the actual papers, all her vlunteers used a digital-learning platfrm which presented them with ld exam questins and recrded their perfrmance. They als tk a mck exam 40 days ahead. T assess their levels f anxiety, the research team asked the vlunteers t rate their anxiety n a five-pint scale in the run up t the real exam and n the day f that exam.
Unexpectedly, anxiety n the test day did nt predict exam perfrmance at all. What did predict it was the level f knwledge a student displayed in the mck exam and the earlier digital-learning activities. Thse wh perfrmed well in these als did well in the real exam, regardless f hw anxius they were n the day, because the greater a student’s anxiety in the days befre the exam, the lwer his r her knwledge-gain was during that perid, leaving that student with less material t reprduce during the exam itself.
This is a psitive discvery, fr it suggests a change f apprach t revisin by the anxius test-takers might help imprve their results. T reduce the anxiety, Dr Thebald prpses a tw-fld strategy fr students as they review. First, they can raise their belief in their wn abilities by reminding themselves f just hw much they knw. Secnd, they can diminish the significance f the test by reminding themselves that, while it is imprtant, it is nt a life r death situatin. It really isn’t.
      12. What is the key finding f Dr Thebald’s research?
      A. Anxius students hate taking exams.
      B. Real exam pressure causes pr scres.
      C. Pressure f revisin affects exam results.
      D. Mcks are mre difficult than real exams.
      13. What did the vlunteers d in the research?
      A. They answered ld exam questins nline.
      B. They had a mck 100 days befre the exam.
      C. They used a digital platfrm t reduce anxiety.
      D. They tk a five-hur exam every three days.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “diminish” in the last paragraph mean?
      A Weaken.B. Stress.C. Ignre.D. Prve.
      15. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
      A. Taking an exam has a lifelng influence n students.
      B. Practicing exam-taking skills in revisin is imprtant.
      C. Building cnfidence can make a difference in an exam.
      D. Develping a gd memry can reduce students’ anxiety.

      A. By making use f traditinal cean tls.

      A. Weaken.B. Stress.C. Ignre.D. Prve.
      15. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
      A. Taking an exam has a lifelng influence n students.
      B. Practicing exam-taking skills in revisin is imprtant.
      C. Building cnfidence can make a difference in an exam.
