S, abut a year ag, I made a prmise: every time I came acrss a wrd I didn't knw—in a nvel, an article r a cnversatin—I wuld lk it up and write it dwn. I wuldn't use any pen r ntebk, just t keep a running list n my phne. Each week, I'd spend a few minutes reading the list back t try t keep the wrds in mind.
The list nw expands almst 20 pages. Each time I lk up and recrd a wrd, I feel a slight change, as thugh sme neglected(忽视的) part f my brain is wrking again. There is als an imprtant element t it—it functins as
smething f a diary, a recrd f what I've been reading and thinking abut, and wh I've been listening t.
It's nt an easy habit t keep up. If I'm reading n the undergrund, I have t stp mid - paragraph, pull ut my phne and type the new wrd I cme acrss int my digital dc. And then there's the revising which I ften frget t d, dutifully scrlling thrugh my grwing wrds list, as if I were preparing fr a vcabulary test.
Still, it's made my mind much sharper. I find myself reaching less ften fr the same tiring handful f adjectives, and mre ften fr smething clear and exact. Few things are mre satisfying than finding the exact wrd yu were searching fr. This small habit renewed my lve f reading. In an era when ur devices attract ur attentin, it is imprtant t use my brain as a tl fr slw thinking. And it has given me back smething I feared I'd lst—the pleasure f exercising a mind that, after years f scrlling n my phne, is finally waking up again.

T imprve the quality f life f peple with cancer, sme experts have regularly recmmended exercise. Staying fit can make patients feel and functin better.
"But exercise itself is never cnsidered a frmal treatment fr the disease," says Kerry Curneya, a prfessr at the University f Alberta wh studies physical activity and cancer. The thinking in the medical cmmunity is that yu need bimedical interventins(干预)—surgery, radiatin therapy, medicines—t treat cancer.
That thinking is changing. This year strng evidence appears that exercise lengthens survival times and lwers recurrence(复发) risk fr several cancer types. Such benefits are usually cnsidered as the results f medicine r surgery. But "exercise treats cancer as well as, if nt better than, sme f the current drugs that we're ffering ur patients," says Curneya, wh led the first large experiment f the effects f wrkuts n cancer utcmes. It was published in July in The New England Jurnal f Medicine and invlved mre than 800 cancer patients. Participants with stage 3 and high - risk stage 2 cancer were ffered a structured exercise prgram in additin t their cancer treatment. In a 10 - year fllw - up perid, these peple had a 28 percent lwer risk f cancer recurrence, new cancers r death than similar patients wh received nly educatinal materials abut physical activity.
A 2025 study f mre than 90,000 cancer survivrs in the U.S. fund that peple survived lnger if they engaged in mderate t high - intensity(高强度的) physical activity after their diagnsis(诊断). Even small amunts f exercise made a difference, but 150 t 300 minutes a week f mderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, was the mst effective interventin.
Experts say the regularity and intensity f exercise matter. "Yu need t get the heartbeat up t imprve the immune(免疫的) system," Straten says. Nw many cancer centers are cnsidering hw t prvide that kind f supprt in additin t their medical fferings. If they dn't, experts say, the centers wn't be delivering n a new standard f care.
28. Why des the authr mentin the thinking in the medical cmmunity?
A. T prmte regular exercise.B. T cmpare tw different studies.

Sme marine mammals(哺乳动物) like Arctic seals, whales and plar bears are being pushed clser t extinctin by climate change and mre than half f bird species arund the wrld are declining under pressure frm defrestatin and agricultural expansin.

The Red List f Threatened Species is updated every year by teams f scientists assessing data n creatures arund the wrld. "The scpe(范围) f the wrk is huge and imprtant fr science," said Andrew Farnswrth, a visiting scientist.
"Every time ne is dne and every time there's revisin, there's mre infrmatin, and there's mre ability t answer questins n species, sme f which are still largely a mystery t us," Farnswrth said.
"Because all the marine mammals native t the Arctic rely n the habitat prvided by sea ice, they're all at risk as it decreases because f human - caused climate change," said Kit Kvacs, which fcuses n seals.
"The same melting f glaciers and sea ice destrying seal habitats will als generally cause an increase in extreme weather events, which are already impacting peple arund the glbe," Kvacs wrte. "Acting t help seals is acting t help humanity when it cmes t climate change," Kvacs said.
Peple see the success stry f green sea turtles as a bright spt because it shws hw effective human interventins, such as legal prtectins and cnservatin prgrams, can be.
Still, it's imprtant t nte that cnservatin effrts f sea turtles can take decades befre we realize the fruits f that labr. But in the places where they have recvered, it's a great stry that, actually, we can d smething abut this and we can make a difference.

A. Wrried.B. Dubtful.C. Optimistic.D. Sensitive.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?

Pressing against the windw beside her mther, Mary prayed fr the strm t pass quickly—and even mre eagerly, fr her maple tree t survive.
When the hurricane finally subsided(消退), Mary and Victria rushed utside. The sight was destructive. Their belved maple tree lay n its side, cmpletely uprted.
