I ndded in agreement.
On the day f the wedding, I asked the prter t call us an fficial cab, a white ne. But what arrived was a slightly ld red-and-gld cab. My mther and me needed t get t the wedding, and I have a cmpletely unhealthy faith in peple. S far, it had paid ff.
We had been updating my husband the whle time, but it was time t tell him we were n ur way. “We are in a red-and-gld cab with a driver wh desn’t speak a wrd f English. I dn’t knw where we’re ging, and I dn’t knw if we’re safe. He is a crazy driver, and I dn’t even knw if he knws ur destinatin.” After my mther gt ff the phne, I tk hld f the cnversatin. “Mm, we have a great driver. He is ging t get us there in time fr the pictures and the wedding.”
There wasn’t much cnversatin until I said, “Here we are, Mm.” That is when the driver said in perfect English, “Is it yur sn’s wedding yu are ging t?”
My mther’s face turned many shades f red, but I turned many “shades f relieved” that my faith in humans had helped us. The driver cngratulated my mther and gave me a knwing wink. We made the pictures just in time. It seemed that it was the pwer f psitive thinking that saved us frm a ptential disaster.

OpenAI c-funder Andrej Karpathy imagines a wrld in which artificial intelligence bts can be made int subject matter experts that are “deeply passinate, great at teaching, infinitely patient and fluent in all f the wrld’s languages.” Thrugh this visin, the bts wuld be available t “persnally tutr all 8 billin f us n demand.”
And he’s nt alne. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and University f Califrnia, Berkeley cmputer scientist Stuart Russell als dream f bts becming n-demand tutrs, guidance cunselrs and perhaps even replacements fr human teachers.
“AI certainly may enhance aspects f educatin, but histry shws that bts prbably wn’t be an effective substitute fr humans. As a researcher fcused n AI and ther new writing technlgies, I’ve seen many cases where high-tech ‘slutins’ fr teaching prblems fizzled.” Andrej said.
Yet technlgies fr persnal learning aren’t new. Exactly 100 years ag, inventr Sidney Pressey unveiled an “autmatic teacher” made ut f typewriter parts. In the 1950s, the psychlgist B.F. Skinner designed “teaching machines.” In bth cases, students didn’t learn much — they als fund these nnhuman appraches bring.
Mre recently, the wrld f educatin saw the rise and fall f “massive pen nline curses,” r MOOCs. Again, students lst interest and lgged ff. Other web-based effrts have appeared, including curse platfrms like Cursera and Outlier. But the same prblem persists: There’s n genuine interactivity t keep students engaged.
Nw cmes the prliferatin f AI-fueled platfrms. Sme tech leaders believe bts can custmize teaching and replace human teachers and tutrs, but they're likely t face the same prblem as these earlier attempts: Students are unlikely t be inspired and excited the way they can be by a live instructr.
The idea f an AI tutr in every pcket sunds exciting, but histry reminds us t keep a clse eye n whether students are actually learning. The prmises f persnalized learning are n guarantee fr psitive results.

On Earth Day-April 22 — the XPrize annunced the winners f its Carbn Remval cntest. A cmpany called Mati Carbn wn the $50 millin prize. Their methd is simple, but it culd remve huge amunts f carbn dixide (CO2) in ur atmsphere and als help farmers grw mre fd.
In 2021, the Xprize Fundatin grup began a 4-year cntest fr the best ideas fr remving mre than 1,000 metric tns f CO2 in a year. Over 1,300 teams entered the cntest. Last year, 20 finalists were chsen. The finalists used many different methds t remve carbn. But in April, Mati Carbn wn the $50 millin grand prize with a fairly simple idea.
The cmpany uses a very cmmn kind f vlcanic rck called basalt. Basalt is used wrldwide t cnstruct rads and buildings. Cmpanies that break up the basalt ften have a fine pwder f basalt left ver that they can’t use.
Luckily, this is exactly what Mati Carbn needs. The cmpany remves carbn by spreading this rck pwder n farm fields. The pwder pulls CO2 ut f the water in the sil and stres it in a way that will last fr thusands f years.
The results aren’t just gd fr the envirnment — they’re als gd fr the farmers. Farmers wh use the basalt pwder n their fields grw rughly 25% mre fd. In areas with pr sil, farmers can grw as much as 70% mre. The rck dust als helps the sil hld water better, which is imprtant in dry places.
Mati Carbn is already spreading basalt pwder n farms in several cuntries, including India, Tanzania, and Zambia. S far, Mati Carbn has remved ver 1,000 metric tns f CO2, but the cmpany believes that number will grw rapidly.
Mati Carbn is a nnprfit cmpany. It puts the pwder n farmlands fr free. T pay fr this, the cmpany sells “carbn credits”. Since Mati Carbn is remving pllutin, large cmpanies that create pllutin buy credits t “ffset” their pllutin s that they can be “carbn neutral (碳中和)”.
32.What is Mati Carbn’s methd mainly abut?
A.Making the air clean.B.Creating new energy.
C.Increasing the crp prductin.D.Reducing CO2 in the atmsphere.
33.Which f the fllwing can describe Mati Carbn’s using a fine pwder f basalt?
A.Fllwing a traditinal way.B.Turning waste int treasure.
C.Challenging an impssible task.D.Creating smething ttally new.
34.What d we knw abut Mati Carbn’s effrt?
A.It’s highly effective.B.It’s extremely difficult.
C.It prduces n effects.D.It csts a lt f mney.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Mati Carbn Cmes up a Way t Increase Crp Prductin.
B.Basalt Pwder Helps Farmers and Reduces CO2 Emissins.
C.Simple But Pwerful Idea Wins Carbn Remval XPrize.
D.Nn-Prfit’s Farm Technique Wins Envirnmental Cntest.

40 , adpting a grwth mindset can be ne f the mst beneficial things yu can d t enable yur success. With a grwth mindset, yu’ll be mentally prepared t deal with challenges, enjy the learning prcess, and see yur prgress, whether big r small.
