I wrte t her after that, and I think she’s a remarkable persn.”
Despite her disability, Chava said, “Having a disability is an imprtant piece f wh yu are, and I’m nt at all in favr f living my life as if the disability is nt imprtant. But it shuldn’t be the thing that hlds me back frm becming strnger.”

Peple smetimes describe thse wh are mre creative as being “right-brained”, and thse wh are mre lgical as “left-brained”. This became a very ppular idea abut hw the brain wrks. But it isn’t really true.
The thery abut left and right brains emerged frm wrk that started in the 1950s. Rger Sperry, a neurscientist at the Califrnia Institute f Technlgy in Pasadena, gt curius abut hw the tw sides f the brain interacted. Thrugh many “split-brain” experiments, he fund that the ability t use and understand language is based n the left half. Sperry’s research changed hw we thught ur brain wrked. But the idea f right-versus-left brain skills als caught peple’s imaginatins. An article based n Sperry’s wrk claimed that skills such as musical ability were cntrlled entirely by the right brain. In this way, imprtant research gave way t assumptin. In fact, this early research had ne huge limitatin: Scientists back then had n way t lk inside a living brain.
Nw, researchers have several tls that can image the wrking brain. One is magnetic resnance imaging, r MRI. It can track bld flw in the brain. Active brain cells need lts f xygen, which is carried by bld. S high levels f bld flw are used t lcate regins where the brain is active. In 2013, researchers used MRI t scan the brains f mre than 1,000 kids and yung adults. They measured whether sme brain functins seemed islated t the left r right sides. And a few functins were tied mre strngly t ne side, these scans shwed. Amng them was language, which supprted Sperry’s findings frm decades earlier. But mst brain netwrks bunced between bth halves.
“That disprved the idea that nly the right half is at wrk when yu perfrm music r create art. Activity is very, very distributed because bth sides f the brain have a lt t ffer,” says Diana Sark, a researcher at Suthern Illinis University. The thery that ne side f the brain can cntrl general traits like creativity r lgic is ut f date. Brain imaging shws that everything is intercnnected.
      8. What can we infer abut Sperry’s “split-brain” research?
      A. It smewhat misled the researchers during that perid.
      B. It barely influenced ur views n hw the brain wrked.
      C. It fund the tw halves f the brain are clsely cnnected.
      D. It clarified the cncept f the left and right half f the brain.
      9. What is key t the advances in the mdern brain research?
      A. Peple’s imaginatins.B. Scientific research methds.
      C. Technlgical prgress.D. A brader range f subjects.
      10. What is Diana Sark’s attitude twards Sperry’s “split-brain” research?
      A. Negative.B. Supprtive.C. Tlerant.D. Neutral.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. We Human Beings are Brn with a “Split-brain”
      B. “Right-brained” r “Left-brained”? Think Again!
      C. Right-versus-left Brain Skills Shape Yur Identity
      D. D Yu Have a Creative Brain r a Lgical Brain?
      D
A qute frm the American writer, F. Sctt Fitzgerald, reads, “T be kind is mre imprtant than t be right. Many times, what peple need is nt a brilliant mind that speaks but a special heart that listens.” Often, we clamr (大声地要求) t be right, t dazzle peple with ur knwledge and intellect, t shw them we are the “superir knw-it-all”. Hwever, upn reflectin, I find that Fitzgerald’s qute resnates with me mre.
In this fast-paced, cmpetitive sciety, mst peple wuld want t strive fr excellence, t be the best they can be. There is nthing wrng with this. Hwever, there are certain individuals wh take it a step further and make it their persnal mtt t exhibit their ne-upmanship (胜人一筹) against anyne whse views differ frm theirs. They believe intensely that their values and their knwledge are flawless. Often such peple will ut-talk thse wh disagree with them. While they may have seemingly wn the argument, is there any real meaning t this? Bth parties are likely t dig their heels in and unlikely t admit they are wrng, until ne side gives in r gives up.
In cntrast, I believe it is far mre imprtant t be kind than right. Even if we knw we are right, we d nt have t press ur views n thers. We shuld in fact listen mre, and learn t appreciate viewpints that are different frm urs. As the famed American educatr Stephen Cvey nce said, “Seek first t understand, then be understd.” Often, we listen nt t understand but t cntradict the ther persn. In an argument with smene, we d nt even listen t what the ther persn has t say because while they talk, we are already mentally trying t find ways t sht dwn their ideas. It wuld be far better t silence ur minds and t actually pay attentin t what the ther persn is saying.
Mrever, the insistence n being right all the time cmes with its wn extra damage — human relatinships are hurt in the prcess. T prve we are right, we becme judgmental. We cnsider the ther persn t be less wrthy because they are “wrng”. T be right means we put urselves in the frnt and center f the relatinship, ignring the feelings f the ther party. Friendships and even family relatinships becme tense just fr the sake f winning the argument, when lve and empathy wuld have wrked better t ease the tensin.
      12. Why des the authr mentin Fitzgerald’s qute in the first paragraph?
      A. T present the fact. B. T make a cntrast.
      C. T intrduce the tpic.D. T prvide an example.
      13. Which best explains the underlined phrase “dig their heels in”?
      A. Admit ne’s mistake. B. Win an argument.
      C. Accept thers’ views. D. Stick t ne’s pints.
      14. Accrding t paragraph 3, why d peple ften listen in an argument?
      A. T ppse thers’ ideas.B. T appreciate different views.
      C. T silence thers’ minds.D. T seek mutual understanding.
      15. Which f the fllwing wuld the authr prbably agree with?
      A. Arguing enables us t get clser t the truth.
      B. Life is nt a race abut being right r wrng.
      C. Quality human relatinships are easy t hurt.
      D. Striving fr excellence causes mst arguments.
