It was first set in 1965 by a bicycle built in Clgne, Germany, measuring 8 metres.
With a histry f building decratins n flats, Ivan started this prject in 2018 t fill his spare time. Needing help t build the giant bicycle, he sught ut team members at the lcal carnival in his hme village f Prinsen Beek. “Prinsenbeek is knwn fr its vlunteers and fr having many peple wh can d skilled jbs,” Ivan said. “Yu can hang ut in frnt f the TV, but we’re nt like that here in Prinsenbeek. We have the technical knwledge and want t apply this knwledge t the maximum.”
Building the bicycle was a lng prcess. The frnt and back parts were prduced in-huse, while the centerpiece was purchased frm a cmpany that prduces lng steel structures. Fr the purpses f this recrd, a bicycle is defined as a pedaled (踏板的) vehicle with tw wheels, ne behind the ther, steered (驾驶) with handlebars attached t the frnt wheel.
Years f calculatins and cnstructin finally led t the fficial recrd try, where tw f the team — ne up frnt steering and anther at the back pedaling - rde the bicycle ver a 100-metre distance t achieve the Guinness Wrld Recrds title. They als achieved anther recrd fr the lngest tandem (多人的) bicycle by adding mre pedals and cmpleting the distance with multiple riders.

Yu may have bught a drink recently and nticed smething dd: the nce remvable cap is nw tethered (拴住) t the bttle by a small piece f plastic. In July, the EU made a new plicy, requiring that all single-use bttles have caps that remain attached. This is ne f several plicies designed t limit the amunt f plastic litter — particularly the caps frm single-use plastic bttles which are far mre likely t find their way int the envirnment and bring a big risk t wildlife.
Prducers have included the tether n bttles sld acrss the Eurpean market, including in the UK. It is time everyne gt n bard. In my pinin, this tiny adjustment is the first effective anti-littering plicy that cntemprary plitics has cme up with. The design f a prduct affects hw readily it becmes litter, and this is especially true fr bttle caps. Tethered caps are nt easily remved frm plastic bttles — they are difficult t thrw away even if smene wants t.
Plastic bttle caps are nw amng the tp ten litter items fund in rivers and the cean. In the UK, 2023 beach surveys listed bttle caps as the third mst cmmn type f litter, while n the Dutch Nrth Sea castline, surveys recrded up t 128 bttle caps fr each kilmeter f beach in 2016.
It is wrth nting that recycling has never been a realistic slutin t the verprductin f plastic. Legislatin (立法) culd slve sme f the issues cming frm tethered lids (附着瓶盖). The UK aims t establish a natinal bttle return system, and will need new systems fr handling mixed-material recycling anyway (nt nly bttles and lids, but cffee cups, tetra packs and straws, amng ther items). Elsewhere, legislatin culd sn fine prducers that fail t address the envirnmental cnsequences f the packaging they have made.
Trying t slve littering by asking the public t stp is nt wrking. Tethered bttle caps are a refreshing idea that puts the nus n thse pumping ut millins f litter-able items in the first place. This means that the duty t reduce litter falls n the cmpanies that prduce these items, rather than just n individuals t clean up after them.
      8. What is the purpse f the EU plicy requiring tethered caps n single-use bttles?
      A. T reduce plastic litter.B. T increase recycling rates.
      C. T standardize bttle design.D. T prmte the use f reusable bttles.
      9. Hw des the authr develp his argument in paragraph 3?
      A. By listing figures.B. By making a cmparisn.
      C. By analyzing cause and effect.D. By fllwing the rder f time.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “nus” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
      A. Stress.B. Respnsibility.C. Punishment.D. Initiative.
      11. What is the best title fr this text?
      A. The Prblem with Plastic Bttle CapsB. The Failure f Public Littering Effrts
      C. The EU’s New Bttle Cap PlicyD. The Imprtance f Mixed-Material Recycling
      D
The twelve new restaurants added t the Michelin Guide this mnth will be drinking t their success. Being in the guidebk f a frmer tire cmpany that nw reviews restaurants is the first step t getting a Michelin star, which is the mst desired prize in high-quality dining. Yet accrding t a research recently published in the Strategic Management Jurnal, a surce f culinary (烹饪的) intelligence, restaurants might be better ff remaining starless.
Daniel Sands f University Cllege Lndn’s schl f management tracked the frtunes f restaurants that pened in New Yrk in 2000 — 2014 and received a starred review in the New Yrk Times. He fund that, f this prmising grup, establishments which went n t get a Michelin star were mre likely t clse dwn in the years that fllwed than thse which did nt. The relatinship remained even when factrs such as lcatin, price and type f cuisine were taken int accunt. All tld, 40% f restaurants awarded Michelin stars in 2005 – 2014 had clsed by the end f 2019.
A Michelin star bsts publicity: the study fund that Ggle search intensity rse by ver a third fr newly starred restaurants. But that fame cmes at a price. First, Mr Sands argues, the restaurants’ custmers change. Being in the center f public attentin raises diners’ expectatins. Meeting guests’ greater demands piles n new csts. Secnd, the award puts a star-shaped target n the restaurants’ back. Businesses they deal with, such as ingredient suppliers and landlrds, use the pprtunity t charge mre. Chefs als want their pay t shw they’ve wn an award and might get taken away by ther businesses.
Fd is nt the nly industry where awards are a mixed blessing. Sme research says that cmpanies with bsses wh wn awards dn’t d as well as they used t r as well as ther cmpanies whse bsses didn’t win awards. Like Michelin-starred chefs, superstar CEOs demand fatter pay packets and are mre easily distracted (分心), spending mre time writing bks. In publishing, t, awards bring danger. Prizewinning bks are reviewed mre strictly than befre their success, and wrse than runners-up.
      12. What is the first step twards receiving a Michelin star?
      A. Winning a fd award.
      B. Being recmmended by a tyre-maker.
      C. Being listed in the Michelin guidebk.
      D. Receiving a starred review in the New Yrk Times.
      13. What did Daniel Sands’ research suggest abut restaurants that received a Michelin star?
      A. They had better fd quality.B. They were mre likely t bm.
      C. They had higher custmer satisfactin.D. They were mre likely t clse dwn.
      14. What’s the main idea f paragraph 3?
      A. Hw t win Mihlin star.B. Hw restaurants bst publicity.
      C. The cst f gaining Michlin star.D. Michlin star’s influence n restaurants.
      15. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
      A. Awards may have negative effrts.B. Fd industries benefit frm awards.
      C. Michelin-starred chefs are the best.D. CEOs with awards are mre successful.
