In the 1980s, I lived in a Victrian triplex clse t Ottawa's Chinatwn. My days were spent hunched ver an Ikea desk, reading, taking ntes and writing fr a master's degree. Mstly, I persevered thrugh all distractins, fully absrbed in what I was learning. But n warm summer days, I wuld bring my ntecards t Dundnald Park. It was there that I first encuntered Tai Chi.
Men and wmen wuld gather, in lse frmatin, and begin t mve with slw thughtful deliberatin, in unisn. Their actins cmbined t achieve a meditative dance, and it sthed me just t watch. There was a beauty and grace t their sessins that resembled a time - lapse vide f a water lily pening.
Tai Chi was mesmerizing but I culdn't see its pint. I culd achieve my fitness gals frm exercise classes, swimming and cycling - and it didn't seem that mving s slwly - wuld d much t tne muscle, my Jane Fnda - inspired bjective fr all activity. I chse nly t admire this martial art as it was practiced by thers, and kept my distance.
But Tai Chi stayed with me - a seed planted. And amazingly, decades later, the necessary cnditins fr flwering have emerged. Mre time - thanks t retirement - cupled with a recmmendatin frm my dctr have brught me full circle, nly this time I am nt n the park bench watching, but inside the frmatin, literally stumbling tward grwth.
I had sme false starts at the utset. The first grup I jined was led by a caring instructr, but its late afternn timing and its setting - a windwless church basement - left me uninspired. After learning the first eight steps, I tk a break and never returned. The secnd try, six mnths later, was mre successful. I fund a mrning class in a much brighter space - and the tiny seedling began t push thrugh the sil.
Naively, I had thught that my gal wuld be t master the chregraphy f the 108 mvements that frm the basis f Tai Chi. Technically right, but wrng n s many cunts. Rather, I quickly learned, what required mastering were my wn persnality traits.
The class was full f lvely peple wh glided effrtlessly, seemingly never cnfused abut where t mve next r what the names f the mves were. They assured me that they had been beginners nce t, and that I wuld be able t remember all the mves within three r fur years. Three t fur years! Graduate degrees tk less time. But I culd see they were right: cmmit and imprve - that was the nly path.
Oh, and ne mre thing: I needed t listen - anther skill where I lacked prficiency. This realizatin came t me pwerfully in my first master class. I had travelled t a Tai Chi centre fr a tw - hur sessin with a well - knwn instructr. I was excited and nervus. There were peple frm all ver Canada, and I was a newbie cmpared t almst everyne there. We began with fundatin exercises, and almst
T be singled ut is an hnur, but I was mrtified. As is required, all the thers in the class stpped and turned t watch me(s that they culd learn, t) while the instructr crrected my psitining. " Dn't lean back, " he said, and I repeated the mvement. " Still leaning back, " he bserved lacnically, and n it went - prbably fr nly a few minutes, but it seemed an eternity.
I culdn't say, " Yeah, I get it. "I had t shw that I did. In thse secnds,I cncentrated as I had never dne befre, listening intently t what the instructr was saying, watching his mvement and then willing my bdy t mve in imitatin. I was simultaneusly unlearning and learning, crwding ut any self - cnsciusness t fcus. As I crrected, my emtin shifted frm humiliatin t exhilaratin. I realized that I was learning nt just a new step but a new way f being in the wrld - - truly listening, pen t crrectin, deeply vulnerable.
I dn't knw that I will ever master the 108 mves. What I d knw is that I have fund an activity in my seventh decade where change and grwth are nt just pssible but expected, even when my stubbrn persnality tendencies re - emerge at every turn.
Gradually, I have becme that lily unflding, awken nt by sunlight and warmth but by this gentle martial art.

      Smelling the rsé
The human sense f smell is ften dismissed as unimprtant and weak, but it makes ur lives mre vivid, says Jnas Olfssn. THERE is smething abut wine experts that rubs peple the wrng way. Wine tasting has becme the epitme f a privileged elite wh spend their days nse deep in a glass f swirling pint nir. This negative view f wine experts isn't nly misguided, but part f a general devaluatin f ur sense f smell.
Over 2000 years ag, Aristtle wrte that"ur sense f smell is nt accurate but wrse than many animals. Fr man smells prly. " The human ability t smell is still thught f as weak. A UK survey shwed it was seen as the least imprtant f the senses, and abut half f yung adults wuld rather lse their sense f smell than their mbile phnes.
But humans are as tute smellers, and smells affect ur lives in prfund ways. A decade ag, researchers discvered that humans can ften detect dur mlecules at a weaker cncentratin than nn - human animals can, utperfrming bats, mnkeys, pigs, rats and thers - - really mst ther animals except dgs. Ethyl mercaptan, a mlecule added t natural gas s we can detect leaks, requires the equivalent f three drps in a space the size f an Olympic swimming pl fr us t detect it - a cncentratin f 0.2 parts per billin.
It is true that ur sense f smell is different frm ur ther senses. While ur brains are superb at perfrming visual analyses f the sensry envirnment, the human sense f smell creates hlistic impressins f ur surrundings, infrmed by all ur senses. When we perceive a smell, we interpret it based als n what we see, hear, think and feel. Fr example, a bright yellw clur helps bring ut the citrus arma in a lemnade. Hunger r the bdily memry f an illness might create ppsite reactins t the same fd smell.
These crss - sensry influences n ur smell perceptins might seem like a shrtcming, but my research has taught me t cnsider it as a feature, nt a bug. My team recently discvered that the brain is especially engaged in making predictins abut future smells, and when thse predictins are vilated by a surprising smell, several regins acrss the brain respnd in an effrt t re - evaluate what we are actually smelling.
Wine experts are great at making smell predictins. A pale ruby - red clur might guide the expert
smell evlved in natural envirnments where the senses had t wrk tgether t find ptential fd surces and remember the cnsequences f eating them.
The expertise f wine tasters is fueled by their knwledge f sensry crrespndences. Smells bind tgether impressins frm all the senses, linking them t ur internal states: hunger, emtins, memries f the past and expectatins f the future. That is why ansmia, the lss f the ability t smell, which happened t millins during the cvid-19 pandemic, ften leaves peple depressed, emtinally and sexually discnnected frm their partners, with a disrupted appetite and a lack f enjyment frm eating and drinking. They smetimes feel like they are detached frm reality rather than being immersed in it.
Smelling makes us live ur life mre vividly, and fr thse affected by chrnic ansmia, a cure fr the cnditin cannt cme sn enugh. While expsure - based smell training remains a recmmended treatment, drugs that help rebuild lfactry cells are currently being explred. Fr thse f us wh are frtunate t have retained ur sense f smell, learning abut wines and new cuisines t expand ur palate, and spending mre time amng the smells f nature, are excellent ways t cultivate ur nasal intelligence.
      45. What's the purpse at the beginning f passage abut the wine experts?
      A. T present a cmmn misunderstandingB. T supprt the authr's attitude
      C. T share persnal experienceD. T criticize certain grup f peple
      46. What was the difference between human sense f smell and animals'a decade ag?
      A. humans have a weaker sense f smell than animals.
      B. humans can detect extremely lw smell.
      C. humans have a better sense f smell than all animals.
      D. humans have a better sense f smell than dgs.
      47. What can we learn infer frm paragraph 4?
      A. Overusing the sense f taste can lead t a decline in ther sensry abilities.
      B. Our sense f smell is similar t ur ther senses.
      C. The clr f the fd can bring ut the dr.
      D. Our sense f smell can imprve ur memry.
      48. In which situatin, the brains' predictin starts a smell re - evaluatin?
      A. When these crss - sensry influences n ur smell perceptins might seem like a disadvantage.
      B. When the brain is especially engaged in making predictins abut future smells.
      C. When the brain respnd t what we are actually smelling.
      D. When thse predictins g against the unexpected smell
      49. Frm the Paragraph 6, evlutin f smell has much t d with
      A. an easy access t fd surceB. humans' curisity t nature
      C. crrespndence sensry knwledge f fdD. danger nature envirnment
      50. What des the passage fcus n?
      A. The significance f researching the sense f smell.
      B. Hw the sense f smell functins by invlving ther senses.
      C. The human sense f smell is mre accurate than ther animals.
      D. Hw can we retrained ur sense f smell?
      D
      The shape f a life
Ask mst peple what' the gd life' invlves, and they will rattle ff a list ff gds. Maybe thse gds are simple pleasures like fd, laughter, sex, r mney; maybe they' re mre refined gds like art, music, friendship, parenthd, r a fulfilling career. Philsphers, yu may be surprised t learn, are peple t, and ften put tgether a similar list as cnstituters f the gd life. Even Aristtle, wh believed that the key t eudaimnia, r 'flurishing', is the cultivatin and exercise f virtue, still thught certain gds were either prerequisites fr happiness (e. g. health) r were gds that came t the virtuus(fame, wealth, friendship).
If we' re cmparing hw happy r flurishing varius peple's lives are, it seems natural t lk fr certain gds, and cmpare wh has mre f them. There are plenty f different ways we culd d this, f curse, and it's quite likely we wn't agree n which gds are the nes that are cnstitutive f happiness. It may, fr ne thing, depend n wh yu are, and what yu happen t value. Ask a yung actr, fr instance, what they cnsider a flurishing, fulfilling life t cnsist f, and they might reel ff a list f gds related t their prfessin: being cast in high - prfile rles, being well - paid, achieving critical acclaim, winning awards, and s n. That seems reasnable enugh. An actr's life will be better, all things cnsidered, if it cntains these things than if it desn't.
But cnsider this thught experiment, adapted frm ne given by the philspher DaleDrsey. Let's cmpare tw thespian lives, each seemingly cntaining the same verall amunt f 'gds', but with very different life - trajectries.
First, meet Tby. Tby wants t be an actr. He struggles t get wrk fr many years, enduring all srts f setbacks and heartbreaks. But as the years g by, Tby manages t land a successin f increasingly prestigius rles. Frm humble beginnings, he wrks his way up t becme a famus, wealthy, and universally respected actr. His lifetime earnings are $20 millin dllars, and he wins an Oscar fr his final mvie befre retiring.
Nw, meet Ybt. Ybt, like Tby, wants t be an actr. Unlike Tby, hwever, Ybt hits the big time right ut f the gate: in fact, he wins an Oscar fr his very first film rle, making him rich and respected. After this initial easy success, he enjys a successin f film rles, but ver time the rles becme less prestigius and less well paid, and he begins t endure a number f setbacks and heartbreaks. Twards the end f his career (acrss which he has earned $20 millin, mstly at the start), he struggles t get wrk, and finally retires int humble bscurity.
As yu'll have quickly realized, these tw actrs' lives, like their names, are mirrr - images. Bth Tby and Ybt's lives cntain the same putative gds: an Oscar, $20m, fame, respect, and s n. They als cntain the same struggles and heartbreaks. If we view their lives as a srt f balance sheet f experiential prfit and lss, Tby and Ybt bth seem t lead lives f equal net wrth. The nly difference is that Ybt experiences these gds and bads in a reverse rder t Tby. Tby's 'verall' scre in life slpes upwards ver time frm a lw starting pint, while Ybt's slpes dwnward frm an initial high, yet they bth hit the same heights and endure the same lws. If flurishing is just a matter f enjying certain gds, then it seems bth actrs flurish t the same extent.
Yet mst f us, I suspect, wuld think that the rdering f these gds des, in fact, make a decisive difference t hw we cmpare Tby and Ybt's careers. It seems hard t avid the cnclusin that Tby's life is better than Ybt's. If we had t chse between these lives, mst f us wuld much prefer t live like Tby than Ybt. Bth experience triumph and adversity, but Tby's stry is ne f triumph ver adversity, while Ybt's is a stry f decline int adversity.
But why shuld that make a difference, if bth lives cntain the same amunt f pleasure vs suffering and bth cntain the same net benefits? Des ur preference fr ne life ver the ther track sme deep fact abut human value, r is it simply an irratinal habit f thught - and wuld we, then, be better ff if we ditched this preference?
When cmparing the verall welfare level f different lives, it seems natural enugh t think f a persn's life as a srt f cntainer fr varius gd and bad experiences. Smene whse life cntains lving relatinships, a stable hme life, fulfilling wrk and experiences like travel and educatin seems better ff than smene whse life des nt cntain these gds. The gds and the bads are what we evaluate; the 'cntainer' they sit in is basically neutral. But that 'balance sheet' mdel seems t miss anther, mre elusive kind f value.
We might, fr instance, value things like vercming adversity, r nt having ur successes cme t easily. Smene wh climbs a muntain will experience mre struggle than smene wh gets drpped n the peak by helicpter, but the climber will als have a sense f accmplishment the ther persn may well envy. In that sense, we might think Tby's life is better because his highs seem mre well - earned than Ybt's d. But that's nt the whle stry. The narrative trajectry itself seems t make a difference. A life f early success fllwed by stagnatin and decline seems like a less verall successful life than ne where success cmes later in the day. Where the stry ends, relative t where it began, seems t matter in itself. We value happy endings, nt just happy mments.
This intuitive judgment is simply expressin in what's been called the'shape f life' hypthesis. On this view, living a gd life is nt finds abut having the right kind f experiences r life - events, but f having them in the right rder r sequence. In ther wrds, it's nt enugh t have the right ingredients - yu have t arrange them in the right srt f way, and sme arrangements are better than thers, in ways that can't be reduced t the sum f the parts. It's like furniture: yu can have tw nice sfa's and a cffee table, but it als matters hw the rm is set up.
What the shape f life hypthesis suggests is that ur lives are nt simply bags int which we cram gd things and bad things. The type f life it is - the genre f that life - stry, s t speak - matters t. Withut the right shape, even a life full f wndrus things can end up as a tale we'd prefer nt t live ut.
