Educatin is essential. It is equally imprtant that all students have excellent educatrs in their life.
I've reflected n the impact my teachers have had, and will cntinue t have, in my life. Frm Mr. Bwker, wh challenged me in math, t Mr. Bernstein, my health teacher wh taught me the value f hard wrk, my teachers have helped shape the student I am tday. But ne f the teachers wh left a lasting impressin n me was my summer schl teacher, Mr. Davis, wh impacted me beynd the classrm. He fund time t cnnect with me n a persnal level and talk t me after class. I felt like Mr. Davis cared abut my academic success and was cmmitted t setting an example f what's pssible.
Mr. Davis culd relate t what it was like t be a rising ninth - grade black male in tday's sciety. He taught me hw t speak up cnfidently and share my ideas with thers. When I wuld put my hand dwn because I was unsure f my answer, Mr. Davis wuld immediately say, "N curage, n triumph." He never made me feel inadequate; he encuraged me t always pursue knwledge because he, t, was learning every day. Mr. Davis helped me brave the challenges and take advantage f the pprtunities.
I think having mre black male teachers like Mr. Davis in the classrm culd increase student success. They wuld share the backgrund and experiences f many f their students and help build lng - lasting teacher - student relatinships. But, unfrtunately, as the student ppulatin becmes mre ethnically diverse, teachers in Nevada still are predminantly white. The numbers fr black male teachers are mre discuraging. Just 2 percent f teachers natinwide are black men.
But yu can help change the numbers. Whether yu decide t study educatin in cllege r graduate schl, I hpe mre black males will cnsider teaching as a career. We students f clr need mre examples f excellence and success in classrms—examples wh lk like us.

One plar bear can leave rughly 300 kilgrams f hunted animals fr ther creatures t feed n each year, with Arctic plar bears cllectively prviding an estimated 7.6 millin kilgrams f carrin (腐肉) fr ther wildlife annually. Published Octber 28 in Oiks, the findings highlight these tp hunters' crucial rle in sustaining diverse species—while sunding an alarm that climate change - driven Arctic warming and declining plar bear ppulatins culd disturb the fragile fd web.
Scientists have lng recgnized that plar bears primarily feed n the thick fat layer f seals—their main hunting targets, and abandn the remaining bdy f the seal. Hwever, the large amunt f these leftvers and their eclgical significance have lng been verlked, ntes Nichlas Pilfld f the San Wildlife Alliance. His team analyzed decades f recrds f animals feeding n dead bdies dating back t the 1930s, alngside data n seal calrie cntent and plar bear hunting habits.
During their yearly hunting peak, a plar bear kills apprximately ne ringed seal every fur days, amunting t rughly 1,000 kilgrams f fd annually. The bear cnsumes the majrity f this mass, leaving arund 30% available fr ther animals t eat. With an estimated 26,000 plar bears acrss the Arctic, these leftvers cllectively sustain arctic fxes, seagulls, and ccasinally snwy wls, r wlves.
"This vital fd surce wuld be cmpletely inaccessible withut plar bears," emphasizes Pilfld. He witnessed these interactins firsthand: fxes fllwing plar bear tracks t find abandned seal bdies, and seagulls circling verhead in nisy grups, cmpeting fr small pieces f meat. He adds the leftvers are "rather imprtant" fr these animals, especially when ther fd is hard t find.
But the Arctic is warming, affecting plar bear ppulatins and, in turn, their leftvers. "It's difficult t predict the effect that the decrease f plar bears' carrin might have n ther species," Aars says. "but it will have an impact ne way r anther, varying by species and specific Arctic habitats."
      28. What can be inferred abut plar bears in Paragraph 1?
      A. They cause fd web disturbances.
      B. They help stabilize Arctic ecsystems.
      C. They are at the fd web's bttm layer.
      D. They face threats nly frm climate change.
      29. Hw des the authr illustrate the imprtance f plar bears' leftvers?
      A. By using data and species reliance.B. By naming varius Arctic species.
      C. By quting an eclgical expert.D. By analyzing climate impacts.
      30. What des Pilfld's statement in the last paragraph suggest?
      A. Leftvers' value is verestimated.B. Carrin lss affects species differently.
      C. Plar bears impact species and habitats.D. Arctic warming risks plar bear survival.
      31. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. Climate change ruins Arctic fd web.
      B. Arctic warming changes plar bears' habits.
      C. Arctic wildlife mainly depends n plar bears.
      D. Plar bears' carrin matters t Arctic ecsystem.
      D
Dlphins call, sea lins sing and whales click—a marine sund scene lng fascinating scientists studying animal cmmunicatin. An Open Mind study analyzes whale cdas (尾音)—unique, repetitive scial clicks—and uncvers an unrecgnized sund pattern: small but clear "click - clack" shifts in sme cdas. Pwered by AI's ability t detect slight sund variatins missed by humans, plus careful analysis,
this discvery suggests the cean giants may have a mre cmplex cmmunicatin system than previusly thught.
Fr decades, scientists have knwn cda click number, timing and rhythm matter. Distinct click se- quences (顺序) identify separate whale grups: ff Dminica's Caribbean cast, ne well - dcumented grup uses a slw " - click - click" pattern, while a neighbring grup favrs a faster, sharp rhythm. Shane Ger f Prject CETI — which decdes marine mammal cmmunicatin — ntes these shifts were verlked in earlier studies withut AI. Sme researchers suggest the shifts wrk like vwels (元音), helping whales distinguish sunds.
Hwever, the study has drawn sharp criticism. Luke Rendell, a 30 - year sperm whale researcher, calls the "vwel - like" claim "scientifically unfunded," stressing n evidence shws whales actively respnd t these variatins in nature. He argues each click has mixed tnes, creating recrding disturbances that appear t be intentinal patterns — an errr the study failed t rule ut adequately.
Thse behind the study acknwledge the criticisms but highlight the team's careful, AI - driven meth- d. Ntably, the CETI team used a special AI system (GAN) fr crss - check: ne algrithm analyzed thusands f real cdas, while the ther generated artificial click sets. AI's precise frequency adjustment matched the artificial cdas t real nes, revealing hw sperm whales might encde and transmit meaning. Withut AI's data prcessing, this slight sund pattern wuld have stayed hidden.
Despite the debate, Rendell cnsiders the pattern "well wrth explring," as the study intrduces a nvel AI framewrk fr marine cmmunicatin research. Whether the "click - clack" shifts are deliberate signals r accidents, the findings pen new avenues fr understanding whales' mysterius language.
      32. What d we knw abut whale cdas?
      A. They shw grup - specific variatins.
      B. They rely n AI fr initial detectin.
      C. They were decded in early studies.
      D. They cpy human vwel patterns.
      33. Why des Rendell questin the "vwel - like" claim?
      A. It cntradicts early studies.B. AI fails t prve its validity.
      C. It ignres whale sund shifts.D. N cncrete prf in nature exists.
      34. What is Paragraph fur mainly abut?
      A. The defense f the AI - pwered research strategy.
      B. GAN's rle in decding whale clicks.
      C. The match between artificial and real cdas.
      D. Criticisms f the sund pattern study.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Whale Cmmunicatin via Clicks: Patterns and Features
      B. AI - backed Whale Cda Research: Differences and Debates
      C. AI - assisted Marine Sund Decding: Prgress and Prspects

And in the 38-year-ld Nelsn, DePal fund an lder brther figure—smene wh taught him everything frm rck climbing skills t where t find crystals in the muntains.
That mrning in December 2023, DePal invited Nelsn t search fr crystals. DePal shuldered mst f the lad—shvels (铲子), pickaxes (镐)—as they walked thrugh sandy valleys and climbed ver big rcks with hands and feet. After abut an hur and a half, they arrived at a rcky hillside spt, where "crystals" were buried just in frnt f a pair f huge stnes.
Fr almst tw hurs the friends happily dug in the sand side by side. At arund 3 p.m., Nelsn stepped aside t rest and enjy the perfect 18°C temperature while DePal cntinued t kneel, wrking away with a small scraper (刮刀) in the large hle they had dug in the sand. The huge stne clsest t him was slightly uphill, but it had a lk f permanence t it, as if it hadn't mved in a thusand years and wuldn't mve any time sn. But here he was wrng. The balance the huge stne had fund ver the years was slwly being shifted, grain f sand by grain f sand, as DePal scraped away beneath it.
DePal sat up fr a mment and turned away as he caught his breath. That's when he heard Nelsn yelling, "Lk ut!" DePal turned back and was shcked t find the stne was lsing its balance and rlling twards him, crashing int him and crushing his legs int the sand.
With DePal nw pinned t the grund, Nelsn ran t grab the pickaxe and wedged (插入) it between the rck and the grund t keep it frm rlling any further. DePal felt the pain was extrardinary. The wrld strange and dreamlike, his bdy went int shck.
