Linguistics hlds a basic premise (前提) at its heart; all languages are equal. Each f the wrld’s rughly 7,000 languages represents a unique way f seeing and understanding life, a natural experiment in human thught. Judgments f a language’s wrth stem nt frm its structure, but frm the pwer and status f its speakers. Yet this prfund diversity is cllapsing. Currently, abut half f all languages have 10,000 r fewer speakers. The median number f speakers per language n every cntinent is belw 1,000. These figures signal acute endangerment.
Languages are nt a dying natural death; they are being frced ut f existence. Inspired by bidiversity and indigenus rights mvements, linguists and activists nw race t dcument languages, creating dictinaries and recrding ral histries. Hwever, linguists cannt “save” languages alne; that pwer lies with the cmmunities themselves. Revitalizatin is a challenging act f hpe, ften feeling like a “wnderful madness” — an attempt t revive a wrldview nearly lst. The fight fr linguistic diversity is ultimately a fight alngside its speakers, requiring real supprt frm the majrity wrld that seldm ntices this silent crisis.
      12. What is the functin f the first paragraph?
      A. T list glbal language statistics.B. T present a current language crisis.
      C. T argue against language superirity.D. T cmpare varius language structures.

      B. Thse passing n thrugh wrds and gestures.
      C. Thse thriving at the expense f ther languages.
      D. Thse simplifying cmplex sund and grammar rules.
14 Why des language lss matter accrding t paragraph 3?
      A. It degrades petry and ral histries.
      B. It threatens glbal envirnmental safety.
      C. It damages well-being f all cmmunities.
      D. It hurts the cntinuity f sme knwledge

And, wrapped in the papers were a bunch f ten-dllar and twenty-dllar bills. “This must be a jke!” I exclaimed. The papers turned ut t be a will. Sme ld lady was leaving her savings fr her sn and grandchildren.
My mind was ging crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-ld ever? With this mney I culd buy the clest bicycle. Maybe I, culd even buy a car fr my parents. “Finders keepers, lsers weepers,” I started singing as I began cunting the mney. It was mre than a thusand dllars in ttal. Yet I didn’t feel gd abut it. Hw cme? “Finders keepers...” the saying ges. But that mney wasn’t really meant fr me, was it? The lady had been saving it fr her family. She must have died and nbdy knew abut the mney hidden in the nightstand. Her family dnated it t the secndhand stre, and nw it was in my hands.
What a dilemma! I culd keep it and get all kinds f stuff fr me and my family. Or I culd give it all back. Tell the truth. N new bicycle. N car. “Smebdy helps me with this!” I prayed.
