Fr many years, the kitchen was a place I was afraid f rather than enjyed. Despite my lve fr fd and the excitement f trying new flavrs, I was ften discuraged by the fear f failing r making mistakes.
When I was a little girl, cking wasn't smething I was encuraged t try n my wn. Mst meals were prepared by family members wh made them seemingly effrtlessly, which nly made me feel mre incapable. When I attempted t help, I was easily discuraged by the cmplexity f recipes and the number f things I had t handle all at nce—chpping, timing, seasning, and mre.
As I grew lder, that fear didn't fade. I ften chse t rder fd r rely n simple, pre - made items because the kitchen seemed like a minefield where ne misstep culd lead t disaster.
One day, I reached a breaking pint. I was tired f missing ut n the satisfactin f making meals and wanted t feel mre in cntrl f what I ate. I decided that I had t face my fear head - n rather than avid it.
My apprach was t break things dwn int manageable steps. I picked recipes that were beginner - friendly and fcused n mastering basic techniques befre mving n t mre cmplicated dishes. Initially(起初), I vercked vegetables, mixed ingredients incrrectly, and at times cmpletely frgt t add key cmpnents(成分). Instead f feeling defeated, I began viewing thse mments as valuable lessns. Repetitin was als key. By practicing simple recipes multiple times, I became mre familiar with cking prcesses. Repetitin made me less anxius.
As I gained hands - n experience, I started feeling mre capable and was willing t experiment with new recipes and ingredients. Nw, the kitchen has becme a playgrund f discvery fr me.

Air flws thrugh every building in which we spend time, including hmes, ffices, schls and stres. HVAC(暖通空调) systems keep that air mving, but they als carry t much carbn dixide(CO₂).
Right nw, the biggest effrts t pull CO₂ ut f the atmsphere rely n huge industrial machines that cst a frtune and need a lt f space. Instead f building big carbn - capture(碳捕捉) plants, what if we culd use the air systems already in place in every building? That's the gal f new filters(过滤器) develped by researchers at the University f Chicag's Pritzker Schl f Mlecular Engineering.
If every building used this kind f filter that fits int the air systems, we culd remve up t 596 megatnnes f CO₂ frm the atmsphere per year. That's like taking 130 millin cars ff the rad fr a full year. But even n a small scale, the benefits are clear. In 2024, a study shwed that these filters culd help cut energy bills by as much as 21.66%.
Nrmally, HVAC systems have t bring in a lt f utside air t keep indr CO₂ levels dwn. Peple have t heat r cl that air, depending n the seasn - and that csts mney. "Our filter remves CO₂ inside the building, s the system desn't have t bring in much utside air. That means less air needs t be heated r cled, which reduces the energy cnsumptin in HVAC," explained Rnghui Wu, wh wrked n the prject.
Unlike standard filters, which end in the trash every six mnths r s, these new filters are built fr reuse. Instead f heading t landfills, they can be cllected and refreshed. P - Chun Hsu, lead researcher, sees a future where cities manage these filters just like they
handle garbage and recycling. Used filters culd be picked up, and sent t a central lcatin, where their CO₂ is remved. The captured carbn culd then be turned int fuels r chemicals, adding value instead f waste.
It is a cleaner filter that captures carbn. If this technlgy catches n, buildings arund the wrld culd becme quiet climate helpers.
28. What are the new filters expected t d?
A. Cntrl air flw thrugh every building.
B. Prvide inspiratin fr building big plants.
C. Replace current heating and cling systems.
D. Turn buildings int carbn - capture machines.
29. Why are cars mentined in paragraph 3?
A. T explre special ways t cut energy bills.
B. T reveal a disadvantage f HVAC systems.
C. T shw the benefit the new filters can bring.
D. T stress the harm f CO₂ frm the atmsphere.
30. What d Rnghui Wu's wrds suggest abut the new filters?
A. They are cst - effective.
B. They are in high demand nw.
C. They are still in the early stage.
D. They are essential t stable temperature.
31. What is the authr's pinin n the new technlgy?
A. It needs further imprvement.B. It is internatinally ppular.
C. Its future can be very prmising.D. Its efficiency varies with the seasn.
The questin f hw art might make us mre empathetic(有同理心的) citizens is a grwing interest fr art institutins, artists, and cultural plicy makers.
Despite high interest, there is surprisingly little data n whether visiting an exhibitin r viewing an artwrk really des anything, especially regarding its effect n hw we think and behave. What kind f effects we might find and hw lng effects might last are entirely unknwn.
T answer these questins, a research team assessed(评估) visitrs' experiences fr the exhibitin, Shw Me Yur Wund, rganized by Jhanna Schwanberg and Klaus Speidel at Dm Museum Wien. The exhibitin used a cmbinatin f mdern and histrical art t fcus n the tpic f vulnerability(脆弱性). Thrugh the exhibitin, Jhanna Schwanberg and Klaus Speidel aimed t encurage visitrs t reflect n a key issue f humankind and t bring abut psitive change.
Researchers first stpped peple walking ut f the museum and asked if they wuld like t participate in exchange fr a free ticket. Visitrs accepting the ticket were asked t reprt n their thughts and feelings regarding their empathetic cncern - bth immediately befre and after the visit. The results shwed that, indeed, the exhibitin increased empathy in visitrs.
The research team als used an experience sampling methd(ESM) technique with the same exhibitin, in which a secnd grup f 41 peple used an app n their mbile phnes t reprt their thughts and actins each day. When cmparing the perid befre the visit t the perid after, the tw - week results shwed that participants reprted trying t cnsider thers' feelings and reflecting mre abut themselves fr the fllwing week. Mst f these changes lasted fr the rest f the week.
"These results prvide evidence that even a brief visit t an art exhibitin can make a detectable change. Even when the impact has a shrter duratin, it still is psitive," nted Matthew Pelwski frm University f Vienna. "If we think abut all f the thusands f peple wh might visit an exhibitin, if everyne thinks a little bit mre f thers, that can lead t a pwerful effect."
32. What did the researchers d first?
A. They fllwed visitrs fr tw weeks.
B. They interviewed exhibitin visitrs.
C. They gave all passers - by free tickets.
D. They used apps t measure visitrs' empathy.
33. Why did the researchers ask participants t use an app?
A. T encurage kindness.B. T send timely guidance.
C. T limit their screen time.D. T track their respnses.
34. Which f the fllwing may Pelwski's expectatin?
A. Further investigatin will be carried ut.
B. Art museums d mre t appeal t visitrs.
C. Jint effrts shuld be made in the future.
D. Mre and mre peple visit art exhibitins.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Vulnerability may bring abut psitive change.
B. Viewing an artwrk affects peple's daily behavir.
C. Visiting art exhibitins can make us mre empathic.
D. Empathy is a necessary element fr art appreciatin.
