Fr years, my schl’s cafeteria was just a space with shining lighting, plastic tables, and dull yellwish-brwn walls. But last semester, smething magical happened. The wrld buys ver a millin plastic bttles every minute, and mst peple end up as pllutin that lasts fr centuries. Plastic bttles are usually made frm a material called PET, which is hard t reuse prperly. Mst used PET becmes lwer quality plastic that still gets thrwn away later. T increase material recvery quality, a research team frm the University f Edinburgh has develped innvative appraches that give plastic a renewed purpse withut traditinal reprcessing methds.

The bacteria eat the pieces and turn them int painkiller medicine. The experiment is successful and shws plastic waste can becme smething useful instead f just trash.
Dr. Stephen Wallace, wh led the study, said, “We estimate (估计) that ne plastic water bttle culd prduce abut nine regular painkiller tablets (药片). While this amunt needs imprving fr large-scale prductin, it prves the idea wrks. In the experiment, the bacteria successfully changed medicine within ne day. All this happens in water at nrmal rm temperature withut pllutin, unlike traditinal medicine making that needs lts f energy and discharges greenhuse gases.”
Althugh plastic raw materials are very easy t cllect and prcess, there are still challenges befre this plastic-made medicine reaches stres. Scientists are planning strict tests t prve the treatment carries n health risks and has n negative effects. Hwever, this new methd culd help turn this waste int valuable medicine while reducing the need fr il in medicine prductin. It shws hw science can find slutins that help bth peple and the envirnment thrugh innvatin.
While mre research is needed, this breakthrugh ffers hpe fr a future where plastic waste becmes a resurce rather than a prblem. It represents an imprtant step tward cleaner medicine prductin and smarter ways t deal with ur plastic waste. C. It is an envirnmentally friendly prcess.D. It takes much time and requires patience.
14. What will the researchers d next?
A. Cllect varius raw materials.B. Put the medicine n the market.
C. Ensure the safety f the medicine.D. Reduce the need fr il in medicine.
15. What is the authr’s attitude twards the study?
A. Psitive.B. Dubtful.C. Disapprving.D. Unclear.

When yu think f a schl cafeteria, what cmes t mind? Plate sunds, lunch lines, and the ccasinal fd fight, right? Fr years, my schl’s cafeteria was just a space with shining lighting, plastic tables, and dull yellwish-brwn walls. But last semester, smething magical happened. A student-led art prject made the cafeteria a creative center, which stimulated cnversatins, develped a sense f cmmunity, and even made lunchtime feel mre special.
It all started with a simple idea during an art club meeting. A student named Maya pinted ut that the cafeteria felt like a hspital waiting rm and suggested wrking with the schl t imprve the space. With apprval frm the headmaster and a small budget, students acrss grades 9-12 began brainstrming themes and sketches.
The gal was nt nly t decrate walls, but t create a space that reflected diversity, celebrated talent, and sparked curisity. After weeks f planning, teams f students wrked in shifts after schl, transfrming blank walls int murals (壁画), replacing ld furniture with painted designs, and hanging student-made sculptures frm the ceiling. Tday, stepping int the cafeteria feels like entering an interactive art exhibit.
The artwrk nt nly brightened the space but als shifted the cafeteria’s rle in ur schl culture. Teachers nticed students staying after lunch t discuss the murals. Shy freshmen bnded thrugh painting sessins. Even the lunch staff gt invlved, suggesting themes like “gratitude fr fd”. The transfrmatin als had ripple (涟漪) effects, like reducing littering.
Ms. Rivera, the art teacher wh advised the prject, shared, “This wasn’t abut perfectin. It was abut giving students wnership f their envirnment. It builds cnfidence and pride when students see their wrk valued in a shared space.” “Art in the cafeteria isn’t just abut making things lk nice. It reminds us that ur schl is nt just a building.
The prcess is surprisingly simple. First, scientists break the plastic int small chemical pieces. Then, the research team wrks with a cmmn bacterium called E. cli.
The study reminds us that with innvatin, we can find ways t slve envirnmental challenges while still making the prducts we need.
12. What is the purpse f the research team’s study?
A. T recycle plastic bttles better.B. T discver new bacterial species.
C. T invent better painkiller medicine.D. T increase the prductin f plastics.
13. What des Dr. Stephen Wallace think f the experiment?
A. It brings negative medical effects,B. It is ready fr mass prductin.
Unclear.
