“Many children here drp ut after primary schl because they can’t pass the secndary schl entrance
exam,” says O’Neil. Her first challenge: a class f 60 6th graders with zer expsure t grammar rules. She started
by dividing them int small grups, using lcal prverbs like “Harambee” (pulling tgether) t teach cllective
nuns. T make lessns relatable, she incrprated maize (玉米) farming — Kibera’s main livelihd — int
stries: “If a farmer plants seeds carelessly, will the harvest be gd? That’s why we need subject-verb agreement!”
O ‘Neil’s dedicatin went beynd the classrm. She nticed 11-year-ld Aisha ften skipped lunch t save

Headteacher Jsephme Mwangi credits O’ Neil: “She didn’t just teach English; she taught hpe. Nw, parents
wh nce thught ‘girls dn’t need schl’ are lining up t enrll their daughters.”
O’Neil, wh extended her stay frm ne t three years, plans t train lcal teachers befre returning t the UK.
“My legacy isn’t in test scres,” she says, “but in Aisha’s smile when she said, ‘Teacher, I want t be a dctr.’”

A recent study, led by Prfessr Andrew Barrn, Dr. HaDi MaBuDi, and Prfessr James Marshall,
illustrates hw evlutin has fine-tuned hneybees t make quick judgments while minimizing danger.
“Animal lives are full f decisins,” says Prfessr Barrn. “A hneybee has a brain smaller than a sesame (芝
麻) seed. But it can make decisins faster and mre accurately than we can. A rbt prgrammed t d a bee’s jb
wuld need the backup f a supercmputer.”
Bees must wrk with bth efficiency and speed, making rapid decisins during their search fr fd as they
need t identify flwers full f sweet liquid while aviding threats at the same time. While flying, they face dangers
frm hunters in the air, and when landing, they becme expsed t hidden enemies that hide themselves as part f
      the flwers and plants.
Researchers trained 20 bees t assciate each f the five different clred “flwer disks” with their visit
histry f reward and punishment. Blue flwers always had sugar juice. Green flwers always had a type f liquid
with a bitter taste fr bees. Other clrs smetimes had glucse (葡萄糖). “Then we intrduced each bee t a
‘garden’ with artificial ‘flwers’. We filmed each bee and timed their decisin-making prcess,” says Dr. MaBuDi.
“If the bees were cnfident that a flwer wuld have fd, they quickly decided t land n it, taking an average f
0.6 secnds. If they were cnfident that a flwer wuldn’t have fd, they made a decisin just as quickly. If
unsure, they tk n average 1.4 secnds, and the time reflected the prbability that a flwer had fd.”
The team then built a cmputer mdel mirrring the bees’ decisin-making prcess. They fund the structure
f the mdel lked very similar t the physical layut f a bee brain. “AI researchers can learn much frm bees
and ther ‘simple’ animals. Millins f years f evlutin has led t incredibly efficient brains with very lw pwer

requirements,” says Prfessr Marshall wh c-funded a cmpany that uses insect brain patterns t enable
machines t mve autnmusly, like nature.
      8. Accrding t Prfessr Barrn, what is special abut bees’ brains?
      A. They are very large in size.
      B. They need supercmputers t help them.
      C. They wrk mre slwly than human brains.
      D. They can make quick and accurate decisins.
      9. What d bees need t avid while wrking accrding t paragraph 3?
A Finding t many flwers. B. Being hunted by enemies.
      C. Wrking with ther bees. D. Flying in bad weather.
      10. What did researchers use t train the bees in the experiment?
      A. Supercmputers and rbts. B. Hidden enemies and threats.
      C. Real flwers with sweet liquid. D. Artificial flwers with different clrs.
      11. What message des Prfessr James Marshall want t give us?
      A. Bilgy can inspire future AI.
      B. The pwer f bee brains is underestimated.
      C. Autnmus machines are changing nature.
      D. AI shuld be far mre efficient.
