We played team-building games, met ur small grup leaders, and gt t knw ur classmates better. By the end f the camp, I already felt a sense f belnging.
Once the schl year started, ne f the first majr events I attended was the Club Carnival, which intrduced us high schl freshmen t a wide variety f extracurricular activities here. I jined the Friendly Fashin Club and a bk club, bth f which gave me a chance t meet like-minded students.
After I adapted t the new schl, there were still mre challenges waiting fr me. The wrklad was heavy, and I quickly realized that keeping up with the numerus subjects and cnstant assignments wuld be challenging: Nt nly did the subjects becme mre difficult, but the expectatins were higher. Hwever, as time went n, I began t develp better time management skills and learned hw t deal with my studies better.
With time, I learned t accept the challenges, knwing that every difficulty was an pprtunity t get better. As I discvered, even the wrst strms pass, and just as cluds give way t blue skies, my fears eventually disappeared.

Accrding t her research, it seems that exercise can make bld vessels(血管), including thse in the brain, strnger and mre fully develped. Dr. Camern is sure that this allws peple wh exercise t think better. As she says, “While we already knw that exercise is gd fr the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects f exercise n brain develpment can even be seen in babies. Babies wh ften d activities shw greater brain develpment than babies wh are less physically active. Even a little mvement can shw big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, als believes in the imprtance f exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary schl r high schl can result frm a lack f mvement as babies.
Older peple can develp their brains as well. Crnell University studied a grup f senirs aged frm 70 t 79. Their study shwed a shrt-term memry increase f up t 40 percent after exercising just three hurs a week. Als, exercise fr lder peple shuld nt be t simple. Learning sme new skills r actins, such as yga r tai-chi, helps t pen up memry paths in the brain that may nt have been used fr a lng time.
Fr mst peple, any type f physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. When yu exercise, yur heart rate increases, which in turn increases bld flw t the brain. Step by step, they use their training t change the pattern until parts f the image begin t match the descriptin. These AI prgrams can make strange mistakes. But with the right descriptin, the tls are able t create images f just abut anything in just abut any style.
Many artists say they’re nw cmpeting against cmputers fr attentin, prizes and jbs. It’s hard fr a single artist t cmpete against all the art and phtgraphy that have ever appeared n the Internet. In August, an artwrk created with AI tls wn first prize at the Clrad State Fair.
The images and the descriptins used t train these AI prgrams were taken frm the Internet. Because f this, the tls can prduce images that aren’t apprpriate. Perhaps mre imprtantly, the creatrs f the training pictures — the artists, the phtgraphers, and even the peple in the pictures — haven’t given permissin fr their images t be used. That has raised questins abut whether what these tls are ding is fair r legal.
This is an area where the law isn’t clear. Sme peple are starting t think abut the legal prblems the artwrks culd bring. A few websites and businesses, such as Getty Images, have said they will n lnger accept wrk created by using these AI tls.

第五部分 附加题(1~13小题,满分10分)
Why We Need t Prtect Plar Bears
Plar bears are being increasingly threatened by the effects f climate change, but their disappearance culd have far-reaching cnsequences. They are uniquely adapted t the extreme cnditins f the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can reach -40°C. One reasn fr this is that they have up t 11 centimetres f fat underneath their skin. Humans with cmparative levels f adipse tissue wuld be cnsidered bese and wuld be likely t suffer frm diabetes and heart disease. Yet the plar bear experiences n such cnsequences.
A 2014 study by Shi Ping Liu and clleagues sheds light n this mystery. They cmpared the genetic structure f plar bears with that f their clsest relatives frm a warmer climate, the brwn bears. This allwed them t determine the genes that have allwed plar bears t survive in ne f the tughest envirnments n Earth. Liu and his clleagues fund the plar bears had a gene knwn as APB, which reduces levels f lw-density lipprteins (LDLs) —a frm f ‘bad’ chlesterl. In humans, mutatins f this gene are assciated with increased risk f heart disease. Plar bears may therefre be an imprtant study mdel t understand heart disease in humans.
The genme f the plar bear may als prvide the slutin fr anther cnditin, ne that particularly affects ur lder generatin: steprsis. This is a disease where bnes shw reduced density, usually caused by insufficient exercise, reduced calcium intake r fd starvatin. Bne tissue is cnstantly being remdelled, meaning that bne is added r remved, depending n nutrient availability and the stress that the bne is under. Female plar bears, hwever, underg extreme cnditins during every pregnancy. Once autumn cmes arund, these females will dig maternity dens in the snw and will remain there thrughut the winter, bth befre and after the birth f their cubs. This prcess results in abut six mnths f fasting, where the female bears have t keep themselves and their cubs alive, depleting their wn calcium and calrie reserves. Despite this, their bnes remain strng and dense.
Physilgists Alanda Lennx and Allen Gdship fund an explanatin fr this paradx in 2008. They discvered that pregnant bears were able t increase the density f their bnes befre they started t build their dens. In additin, six mnths later, when they finally emerged frm the den with their cubs, there was n evidence f significant lss f bne density. Hibernating brwn bears d nt have this capacity and must therefre resrt t majr bne refrmatin in the fllwing spring. If the mechanism f bne remdelling in plar bears can be understd, many bedridden humans, and even astrnauts, culd ptentially benefit.
The medical benefits f the plar bear fr humanity certainly have their imprtance in ur cnservatin effrts, but these shuld nt be the nly factrs taken int cnsideratin. We tend t want t prtect animals we think are intelligent and pssess emtins, such as elephants and primates. Bears, n the ther hand, seem t be perceived as stupid and, in many cases, vilent. And yet anecdtal evidence frm the field challenges thse assumptins, suggesting, fr example, that plar bears have gd prblem-slving abilities. A male bear called GG in Tennji Z, Osaka, has even been bserved making use f a tl t manipulate his envirnment. The bear used a tree branch n multiple ccasins t disldge a piece f meat hung ut f his reach. Prblem-slving ability has als been witnessed in wild plar bears, althugh nt as bviusly as with GG. A calculated mve by a male bear invlved running and jumping nt barrels in an attempt t get t a phtgrapher standing n a platfrm fur metres high.
In ther studies, such as ne by Alisn Annes in 2008, plar bears shwed deliberate and fcused manipulatin. Fr example, Annes bserved bears putting bjects in piles and then kncking them ver in what appeared t be a game. The study demnstrates that bears are capable f agile and thught-ut behaviurs. These examples suggest bears have greater creativity and prblem-slving abilities than previusly thught.
As fr emtins while the evidence is nce again anecdtal, many bears have been seen t hit ut at ice and snw — seemingly ut f frustratin — when they have just missed ut n a kill. Mrever, plar bears can frm unusual relatinships with ther species, including playing with the dgs used t pull sleds in the Arctic. Remarkably, ne hand-raised plar bear called Agee has frmed a clse relatinship with her wner Mark Dumas t the pint where they even swim tgether. This is even mre astnishing since plar bears are knwn t actively hunt humans in the wild.
If climate change were t lead t their extinctin, this wuld mean nt nly the lss f ptential breakthrughs in human medicine, but mre imprtantly, the disappearance f an intelligent, majestic animal.
